The Black Dog Newsletter August 13 – September 3rd “Taking a Break Edition!”

Just wanted to say thanks to all who shot us great ideas on how to keep on keepin’ on last week. Some really good suggestions that we’re mulling over. We want to be able to provide all of you fine folks with the best selection of world cinema around for a long long time. That said, I’ll be stepping out of my writing pants for a brief respite so there won’t be another newsletter until the beginning of September. Oh stop it, you’ll be fine!

New Releases!

All is True – Kenneth Branagh directs himself as William Shakespeare (Billy Shakes to his friends) who’s Globe Theatre burns down and he’s forced to go home to Stratford and hang with his fam.

Dark Forest – Low budget Canadian “maniac in the woods” type slasher flick.

Donnybrook – Jamie Bell and Frank Grillo end up at a cage match in the woods competing for a large cash prize!

Finding Steve McQueen – Bunch of clever thieves attempt to steal Tricky Dick’s secret funds in the sort-of true tale.

Missing Link – Animated family comedy movie about an orange monkey.

Mr. Mercedes Season 2 – Season 2 of this fine Stephen King TV shoe.

Plus One – All of Alice and Ben’s friends are getting married and they are each others “Plus One” (see title) for the insufferable weddings in this rousing romantic comedy. Think they become less jaded and fall in love? Ya, me neither.

Shadow – Latest beautiful martial arts extravaganza from director Zhang Yimou.

The Souvenir – Tilda Swinton’s daughter, Honor Swinton Byrne, Swintons it up as a young artist finding her way in the realms of love, art and other such life-like things.

Teacher – Intense drama about a nice teacher trying to protect his students against bullies and mean goateed headmasters.

Tolkien – Nick Hoult (The Favourite) is JRR Tolkien, a guy who wrote some famous books about Hobbites and such.

(Oh, and also a certain special powers film I’m not supposed to mention, rhymes with Suspenders: Friend Came)
