Today is the day! (May 22nd) AKA the Crazy-Ass sale at Black Dog Video. Very sad to see our wonderful collection go but happy knowing they are going to good homes.
Here’s what you need to know…

– All catalogue films will be on sale. No New Releases. No TV series (I will not get to price them in time). No Collectibles.

– Doors open at noon and close at 6pm (that’s about all we can take) The sale will run until the end of June. As will rentals – New releases and what we have left.

– You pay CASH (preferred) we’ll pay the tax

– Masks are encouraged to keep everyone safe(ish)

– Because it’s a small shop we’re only letting in a certain number of folks at a time (probably around 15). Please keep your shopping short and sweet. Make a list of things you’d like. There are a number of films that are rented out. They will be available to purchase upon their return.

– Please bring your own bags.

– There will not be any deals so please don’t ask.

– Please be patient and kind as it’s going to be a trying time for us all. You may not get everything that you want. You can scream into the void after you leave the shop.

It’s going to be a sad/crazy day.

After 26 years in this business (16.5 on the Drive) it is with the heaviest of hearts and the saddest of sads, that I must announce that Black Dog Video is closing. It’s been a long time coming but it’s finally time to rip that band-aid off and pull the trigger so to speak. Business has been on a decline for years while costs – rent, etc – have steadily risen. We just can’t feasibly stay open any longer. We lost the war to, what I call, the “convenience of mediocrity” that is streaming et all. Unless some kind of miracle comes along – maybe a wealthy benefactor takes us under their wing or a long-lost relative wills me their fortune (yes, I’m willing to spend a night in a haunted house!) then we will be closing our doors come the end of June (tentative date as I’m on the hook with my lease until February). We are currently pricing the stock (what a sad arduous task that is!) and we’re aiming for May 1st to make it available to the public for purchase. It pains me just to write that.

It breaks my (and the staff’s) hearts to have to do this as I’ve loved this job and feel damn lucky and privileged to have been able to bring the world of cinema to Vancouver for so long. It’s going to be a difficult next few months.

I want to thank all of you who came through our doors over the years and especially the ones who stuck with us till the end – a proper eulogy is still to come. Dark days indeed.

New Releases

The Batman – If you like your Batmans grimy, wet, brooding, sad, mopey and overly-long, this is the film for you! The first 2/3rds I was like, this is the best Batman movie so far. The last 3rd I was like, when is this going to be over?

Belle – Cool-looking animated number about virtual reality and such.

Kurt Vonnegut: Unstuck in Time – Nice-looking doc about the famed author (Kurt Vonnegut) who talks about all kinds of stuff – when he fought Hemingway in the Thunderdome, his time as a snake charmer, when he drank Andre the Giant under the table (these things may or may not be in the film).

Licorice Pizza – PT Anderson’s latest cool dealie follows a couple of crazy kids as they run around L.A. (sih) in 1973. Yes please!

Succession Season 3 – Everyone’s favourite despicable idiotic rich family is back for more wild and wacky adventures. Yes please!

X – Sweet-looking new horror number from Ti West (House of the Devil) finds a bunch of young filmmakers making a dirty movie in a rural farmhouse who get in dutch with the locals who don’t approve of such behavior. Yes please!

UPDATE for MAY 1st!

UPDATE!

The sale originally scheduled for May 1st has been moved to MAY 22nd! Don’t show up at Black Dog Video expecting to buy our stock today. Not going to happen. Sorry for the inconvenience.

The Black Dog Video Newsletter: And The Beat Goes On Edition!

Well, it becomes more official as time crawls on – the space has been leased for July 1st. We still have to pick an exact date for our last day (I should check my lottery ticket). Damn.

It looks like the sale will commence on the 22nd of May and run until we close. All films, excluding New Releases, will be up for grabs (the NR will be made available around the middle of June). Prices start at $10 and go up from there. There will be no haggling or deals so please don’t ask. And we’re not taking any reservations for sale films. I imagine that there will be a substantial line-up that morning (please don’t rain!) and we won’t be able to let everyone in the shop at once. Y’all be patient and nice. If you can come prepared with a list, we’ll do our best to accommodate you. You may not get everything you want, but that’s the world we live in, right? Also please bring your own bags (and we ask that you wear a mask as well) and if you pay cash (preferred) we’ll cover the tax. More details to come. Damn this is hard.

A few new things are making their way onto the shelves today or tomorrow:

Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn – A school teacher’s life is upended when a sex tape is leaked onto the intrawebs. Doesn’t everyone have a sex tape on the intrawebs by now?

Betrayed – Follow along as a Jewish family tries to survive the camps in this grim little number. Weird that the box art makes it look like a romance.

Fabian: Going to the Dogs – Drama/romance set in 1930’s Berlin finds a guy who’s a doctor by day and a street rat by night.

From the Journals of Jean Seberg – Cool-looking doc from 1995 about famed actress Jean Seberg of Breathless fame.

Rocco Schiavone: Ice Cold Murders Season 1 – Italian police drama about a weed-smoking, potty-mouthed detective. I could do that job!

Turning Red – Latest Pixar hoo-haw.

Wildhood – Two indigenous brothers embark on a journey to find their birth-mom. Hi-jinks, I presume, ensue.

We are currently working to update the website as we move to online sales so stay tuned for that. We also have another run of T-shirts on the way as we are completely sold out of all our shirts!

Again, thank you to everyone who’s popped in to share their sadness and thoughts about us closing the doors (and even given us lovely gifts!). It’s been a crazy, emotional ride and I suspect it will be so until the end.

Everyone be good to everyone out there.

The Black Dog Video Newsletter: Overwhelmed Edition!

Wow. The response to announcing our closing has been nothing but overwhelming. I knew that we’d get some attention (media and customers) but nothing like what we’ve received in the past week. Folks are genuinely upset and saddened by us leaving. I knew that many of you liked us and felt what we do is important but, man, you all blew my head completely off (figuratively, not literally)! You’ve made this old man cry more times in the past week then I have in the past, well, forever. And that just makes me even sadder knowing how much we will be missed. Damn.

That said, we’ve decided to move the sale of the stock from May 1st to May 22nd (this date is subject to change as well) as we will not be ready (emotionally and physically) to let our wonderful catalogue go. I hope that this doesn’t mess too many of you up. Apologies in advance. So, unless something magical happens (wealthy benefactor/long lost relative with a haunted house), May 22nd for the sale – we are not taking reservations for sale items – and the end of June(ish) for closing.

Not much hitting the shelves this week (always a slow time for releases) but hopefully we’ll have something tasty for you next week. Now is a great time to pop in and rent some of our amazing back catalogue. Catch up on some films you should have seen by now before it’s too late.

One last thing before I let you go – I forgot to mention our Easter Podcast special dropped last week! Listen in as your favourite podcasters dig into Life of Brian! Good times.

Everyone be good to everyone out there.
