The Black Dog Video Newsletter: Rules of Engagement Edition!

The Big Sale! Here’s what’s happening on May 22nd (2022).

– All catalogue films will be on sale. No New Releases. Possibly no TV series (I may not get to price them in time)
– Doors open at noon and close at 6pm (that’s about all we can take)
– Masks are required to keep everyone safe(ish)
– Because it’s a small shop we’re only letting in a certain number of folks at a time (probably around 15). Please keep  your shopping short and sweet
– Please bring your own bags
– You pay cash (preferred) we’ll pay the tax
– There will not be any deals so please don’t ask
– Please be patient and kind as it’s going to be a trying time for us all. You may not get everything that you want. You can scream into the void after you leave the shop.

It’s going to be a crazy busy day, but let’s make the best of it. Man, beer is going to taste great at 6:05!

New Releases

The Batman – If you like your Batmans grimy, wet, brooding, sad, mopey and overly-long, this is the film for you! The first 2/3rds I was like, this is the best Batman movie so far. The last 3rd I was like, when is this going to be over?

Belle – Cool-looking animated number about virtual reality and such.

Kurt Vonnegut: Unstuck in Time – Nice-looking doc about the famed author (Kurt Vonnegut) who talks about all kinds of stuff – when he fought Hemingway in the Thunderdome, his time as a snake charmer, when he drank Andre the Giant under the table (these things may or may not be in the film).

Licorice Pizza – PT Anderson’s latest cool dealie follows a couple of crazy kids as they run around L.A. (sih) in 1973. Yes please!

Succession Season 3 – Everyone’s favourite despicable idiotic rich family is back for more wild and wacky adventures. Yes please!

X – Sweet-looking new horror number from Ti West (House of the Devil) finds a bunch of young filmmakers making a dirty movie in a rural farmhouse who get in dutch with the locals who don’t approve of such behavior. Yes please!

After selling out of all our shirts in two weeks, we’ve re-upped on some of the more popular designs. We have these two in stock in M, L and XL right now. We also have a few XXL in the Blockbuster and Restricted Cat styles.

Apologies for the unkempt-looking model.

New Releases!

The Cursed – What is this cursed menace that is threatening a small French town in the 19th century? Is it possibly a werewolf? Werewolf?!! There wolf!

The Girl Can’t Help It – Criterion release of the classic Jane Mansfield comedy with music about a gangster who hires a hard-luck press agent to make his airhead girlfriend a star.

Uncharted – Spider-man and Marky Mark team up for some adventures involving gold and airplanes.

The Black Dog Video Newsletter: And The Beat Goes On Edition!

Well, it becomes more official as time crawls on – the space has been leased for July 1st. We still have to pick an exact date for our last day (I should check my lottery ticket). Damn.

It looks like the sale will commence on the 22nd of May and run until we close. All films, excluding New Releases, will be up for grabs (the NR will be made available around the middle of June). Prices start at $10 and go up from there. There will be no haggling or deals so please don’t ask. And we’re not taking any reservations for sale films. I imagine that there will be a substantial line-up that morning (please don’t rain!) and we won’t be able to let everyone in the shop at once. Y’all be patient and nice. If you can come prepared with a list, we’ll do our best to accommodate you. You may not get everything you want, but that’s the world we live in, right? Also please bring your own bags (and we ask that you wear a mask as well) and if you pay cash (preferred) we’ll cover the tax. More details to come. Damn this is hard.

A few new things are making their way onto the shelves today or tomorrow:

Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn – A school teacher’s life is upended when a sex tape is leaked onto the intrawebs. Doesn’t everyone have a sex tape on the intrawebs by now?

Betrayed – Follow along as a Jewish family tries to survive the camps in this grim little number. Weird that the box art makes it look like a romance.

Fabian: Going to the Dogs – Drama/romance set in 1930’s Berlin finds a guy who’s a doctor by day and a street rat by night.

From the Journals of Jean Seberg – Cool-looking doc from 1995 about famed actress Jean Seberg of Breathless fame.

Rocco Schiavone: Ice Cold Murders Season 1 – Italian police drama about a weed-smoking, potty-mouthed detective. I could do that job!

Turning Red – Latest Pixar hoo-haw.

Wildhood – Two indigenous brothers embark on a journey to find their birth-mom. Hi-jinks, I presume, ensue.

Coming Soon!

Licorice Pizza
The Batman
Succession S 3

We are currently working to update the website as we move to online sales so stay tuned for that. We also have another run of T-shirts on the way as we are completely sold out of all our shirts!

Again, thank you to everyone who’s popped in to share their sadness and thoughts about us closing the doors (and even given us lovely gifts!). It’s been a crazy, emotional ride and I suspect it will be so until the end.

Everyone be good to everyone out there.

The Black Dog Video Newsletter: Overwhelmed Edition!

Wow. The response to announcing our closing has been nothing but overwhelming. I knew that we’d get some attention (media and customers) but nothing like what we’ve received in the past week. Folks are genuinely upset and saddened by us leaving. I knew that many of you liked us and felt what we do is important but, man, you all blew my head completely off (figuratively, not literally)! You’ve made this old man cry more times in the past week then I have in the past, well, forever. And that just makes me even sadder knowing how much we will be missed. Damn.

That said, we’ve decided to move the sale of the stock from May 1st to May 22nd (this date is subject to change as well) as we will not be ready (emotionally and physically) to let our wonderful catalogue go. I hope that this doesn’t mess too many of you up. Apologies in advance. So, unless something magical happens (wealthy benefactor/long lost relative with a haunted house), May 22nd for the sale – we are not taking reservations for sale items – and the end of June(ish) for closing.

Not much hitting the shelves this week (always a slow time for releases) but hopefully we’ll have something tasty for you next week. Now is a great time to pop in and rent some of our amazing back catalogue. Catch up on some films you should have seen by now before it’s too late.

One last thing before I let you go – I forgot to mention our Easter Podcast special dropped last week! Listen in as your favourite podcasters dig into Life of Brian! Good times.

Everyone be good to everyone out there.

The Black Dog Newsletter: This is the End Edition!

This is easily the most difficult newsletter I’ve had to write. Here it goes…

After 26 years in this business (16.5 on the Drive) it is with the heaviest of hearts and the saddest of sads, that I must announce that Black Dog Video is closing. It’s been a long time coming but it’s finally time to rip that band-aid off and pull the trigger so to speak. Business has been on a decline for years while costs – rent, etc – have steadily risen. We just can’t feasibly stay open any longer. We lost the war to, what I call, the “convenience of mediocrity” that is streaming et all. Unless some kind of miracle comes along – maybe a wealthy benefactor takes us under their wing or a long-lost relative wills me their fortune (yes, I’m willing to spend a night in a haunted house!) then we will be closing our doors come the end of June (tentative date as I’m on the hook with my lease until February). We are currently pricing the stock (what a sad arduous task that is!) and we’re aiming for May 1st May 22nd to make it available to the public for purchase. It pains me just to write that.

It breaks my (and the staff’s) hearts to have to do this as I’ve loved this job and feel damn lucky and privileged to have been able to bring the world of cinema to Vancouver for so long. It’s going to be a difficult next few months.

I want to thank all of you who came through our doors over the years and especially the ones who stuck with us till the end – a proper eulogy is still to come. Dark days indeed.

That said we still have some new films hitting the shelves today or tomorrow.

New Releases!

Cyrano – The awesome Peter Dinklage stars in this often told tale of a shy fella unable to woo the woman of his dreams. Make a great double bill with Roxanne.

Jackass Forever – What can you say, even as old men, they still act like teenage boys. That said, I’ve always loved these stupid movies.

The King’s Daughter – King Louis XIV captures a mermaid to extract her mermaidy-life force or something like that. Not a documentary. Make a great double bill with Lifeforce.

V/H/S/ 94 – Pretty fun horror short film compilation. If you’re into the V/H/S series (which I am) check it out.

Coming Soon!

(We’ll continue to bring in rental New Releases until the beginning of June)

Licorice Pizza
The Batman
Succession S 3
Everything Everywhere All at Once

We will continue doing sales – I’m going to keep the online portion of the business going so please fell free to order up whatever you like!

Sorry to ruin everyone’s long weekend, but there ya go. Hoping to see ya’ll in the near future!

Be good to everyone out there.

The Black Dog Video Newsletter: In the Soup Edition!

So after dodging the plague for a couple of years, my ticket came up. Yep, I’m at home enjoying a big fresh bowl of Covid soup! But don’t let that stop you from coming into the shop! Keep on renting and buying our fresh things! Keep the staff on their toes with fancy requests! I’m hoping to be back in the shop this weekend, but we’ll see how it goes.

Death on the Nile – Kenneth Branagh follows up his star-studded Murder on the Orient Express with his star-studded Death on the Nile. Look at all those star studs!

Handmaid’s Tale S4 – Love this incredibly grim show. Pay attention Texas. And Florida. And…

Parallel Mothers – The latest gem from Pedro Almodovar has Oscar-nominated Penelope Cruz giving birth on the same day as another woman. I’m sure that there’s more to it then that.

The Black Dog Newsletter: Who Needs The Beach Edition!

While a lot of folks headed for sunnier climes for the March Break, we went to exotic frozen Ontario! To be honest it was lovely. But we’re back to business, baby! First thing on the agenda – new podcast episode has been unharnessed! Listen in as us louts have a beer and discuss the cold war 80’s classic Wargames! Seems appropriate for these unsettling times.

New Releases!

Dexter: New Blood – Everyone’s favourite serial killer of serial killers is back. I hear he takes on a murderous Sasquatch in this season!

The Flight Attendant – Hard partying flight attendant wakes up with a dead guy in her bead. We’ve all been there.

Hive – A woman, whose husband has been missing for seven years after the war in Kosovo, starts a business, which is much frowned upon, with other widows. Contains bees.

Nightmare Alley – Guillermo del Toro’s take on the strange, cool original noir (also available at Black Dog) about a grfiter working in a carnival. Nominated for a basket full of awards.

On the 3rd Day – Neat looking horror/drama from Argentina about a woman looking for her missing son after a mysterious car crash.

Red Ghost: Nazi Hunter – WWII action drama about a mysterious Russian sniper who picks off some nasty Nazis. May or may not contain ghosts.

Red Rocket – The latest from Sean Baker (Florida Project) is a strange, sometimes uncomfortable, tale of a sleazy former porn star fallen on hard times who returns to his sad little hometown. Quite liked this one, myself.

Coming Soon!

Death on the Nile
Scream (2022)
Handmaid’s Tale Season 4
Sing 2
Parallel Mothers
Last Looks
Spider-Man: No Way Home

There may be a major announcement in next week’s newsletter. Stay tuned.

Everyone be good to everyone out there. Peace.

The Black Dog Video Newsletter: Spoken Words Edition!

Words are best when spoken and then received into your ear canal. I think that’s how it works. That brings me to this – a new podcast episode has just been unleashed into this unsuspecting world! New Releases

The Boy Behind the Door – A couple of nice boys are kidnapped by some not-so-nice folks in this cool-looking little horror number.

Dalgleish Series 1 – Sweet-looking British crime series. You know what to do.

All Creatures Great and Small Season 2 – Season 2 of this charming British series about animals and the nice folks who love them.

The Nowhere Inn – Neat looking documentary/drama/comedy/horror number sees musician St. Vincent hiring other musician (and actor) Carrie Brownstein to make a doc about her. Things don’t go as planned.

Be good to everyone out there. Except Putin.
