We just released a “Dog Track” (aka commentary track) to go along with Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band movie which we suffered through a while back. Check it out if you dare at! (we will be migrating all the podcasts to this site asap)

That’s it for this week, folks. Stay healthy, get vaccinated, party.

We are in the process of re-vamping this web page seeing as we haven’t done that in about 15 years. It’ll be exciting and new! Come aboard, we’re expecting you!

The Black Dog Video Newsletter: Of Charity Events and DVD Deals!

If you might recall, last year on Friday the 13th, we did an in-store movie marathon to raise money for the food bank. Dylan, Alex and I subjected ourselves to watching all the Friday the 13th films in a row! It was a grueling, but fun, experience and we managed to raise around $800. Well, if you look closely at your calendar, you’ll notice that there’s another Friday the 13th next month! You can see where this is going – the 3 of us maniacs will again be doing a movie marathon – this time it’s the Nightmare on Elm Street series – to raise much-needed funds for the Vancouver Food Bank. Details to come!

With no signs of this heat abating, we’ve decided to offer you some sweet movie purchasing deals! Our $5 sale films can be had 3 for $10 for the month of July! We have tons to offer you! In addition, we’ll be discounting our sale box sets! Pop into the shop to see what we have for your collection. Viva la physical media!

Due to unforeseen circumstances, there are no new films arriving at the shop this week. But don’t let that stop you from popping in and grabbing something for the weekend! If you’re interested, check out my letterboxd page (and follow me if you will because that’s what we do now right, follow each other?) for things I’ve watched and liked and disliked.

This is what should be arriving next week for your pleasure…

Backstom Series 1
Frontline: The Virus That Shook the World
Jakob’s Wife
Mortal Kombat
The Separation
Silat Warriors: Deed of Death
The Sound of Metal
The Walking Dead Season 10

There should also be a new video of me yakking about movies up on the website on the internets real soon.

Have a great weekend, stay hydrated, stay safe, masks are now optional for those of you who are fully vaccinated in the shop but encouraged for all.

The Black Dog Newsletter! Oh, Canada Edition!

The Black Dog Newsletter! Oh, Canada Edition!

We recorded a special Black Dog Video After Dark: Canada Day podcast a while back for release now but we had some qualms about doing something to celebrate Canada Day what with all of all the recent horrors that have come to light. We did decide to release this episode for various reasons (read here) and you can listen in as we discuss the Canadian classic PIN.

So many things happening at the moment! With the new “Stage 3” guidelines going into effect we’ve set out our own rules and regulations for what’s happening at Black Dog Video. Read all about them here.

New Releases!

Here Are the Young Men – Three Irish teenagers go down the drugs and drinking route to nowheresville.

His Dark Materials S2 – Season 2 of this pretty cool show.

Hunter Hunter – Fur trapping family is hunted by a nasty lone wolf (not McQuade).

Honeydew – Weird things abound when a young couple take refuge in a weird home run by a weird farmer and her even weirder son.

The Man Who Sold His Skin – Syrian refugee, Sam, has his body turned into a work of living art. But at what cost? AT WHAT COST?!!

Super Frenchie – Doc about an extreme athlete and the extreme things he does. I really don’t like the name of this film. Like, seriously.

Us – Comedy/Drama dealie show about a family traveling across Europe ( I assume it’s before plague days).

Canada Day

This Canada Day is shaping up to be a sombre one with the recent discovery of all those poor murdered children on Residential School grounds (can’t someone or something be held accountable?!) and everything else that is not right in this country (access to clean drinking water, the heat and fires caused by inaction on global warming and so forth).

About a month ago we recorded the latest episode of our podcast for release on Canada Day. Then there came much heated debate among the three of us if we should even release it. In the end we decided to go ahead as it is first and foremost a podcast about movies – in this case a Canadian film – and we wanted to add a touch of brevity to the heaviness that many Canadians are feeling at the moment.

That said, we’re not here to celebrate Canada today but to enjoy what Canadian film has to offer. I hope that all of this makes sense and you can get a laugh or two as we settle in to talk about the movie PIN! It will be released shortly along with this week’s newsletter.

Stage 3: What the What!

So with the guidelines for the next phase of getting back to “normal” kicking in July 1st, Black Dog Video suggests the following when in the shop…

Please wear a mask if you haven’t been fully vaccinated or even if you have (but it’s your choice if you have been fully vaccinated). This will obviously be on the honour system.
If you feel more comfortable with the staff wearing mask, please let us know and we will happily slap it on. We’ve all been fully vaccinated.
Please still be respectful of others in the shop and do not be belligerent towards anyone either wearing or not wearing a mask.

We’ll just have to see how all of this plays out.

June 28th

So seeing as it’s going to be around 1000 degrees come 4pm and that’s when the sun hits the shop, we’ve decided to close at 4 today (Monday June 28th)

We’ll be ready to rock come tomorrow though!

The Black Dog Video Newsletter! Screaming Hot Edition!

So as you are all aware, we’re in for a record-breaking, face-melting, walk around in your underwear (or less) heat wave this weekend! Ugh. Stay safe! Drink lots of water (or other water-based beverages), sunscreen people etc. Me? I’m hoping to stay inside and pass the heat watching movies.

There’s a fresh new video of an old man talking about movies for you! Right here! on our Youtube channel, The Black Dog Video Empire! Watch. Like. Subscribe. It’s easy and FREE!

New Releases!

Batman: Long Halloween Pt 1 – Halloween is the perfect time for the Batman to investigate some scary murders! Blu Ray only.

Body Brokers – What’s the scam going on at this addiction clinic, asks Frank Grillo?

Chaos Walking – Spiderman and Star Wars travel on a strange planet where everyone can hear your thoughts. Terrifying!

Georgetown – Crime drama has Christoph Waltz marrying a wealthy widow (Vanessa Redgrave) in order to climb into the society. I could be wrong, but I think everyone’s name is George.

Nobody – Better Call Saul kicks some serious butt in this fun action exercise.

The Paper Tigers – Three washed-up old timers, who used to be Kung-Fu prodigies, reunite to revenge the death of their master. Like me some good revenging.

Salisbury Poisonings – True tale of the Russian’s poisoning assassination attempt of a double agent. Those Russians sure like to poison folks!

Sin: Il Paccato – The life of Michelangelo Buonarroti, famous sculpture and marble enthusiast.

Ten Minutes to Midnight – Late night radio host is bitten by a bat and transforms into a vampire and then eats her co-workers. Not a documentary.

Vikings Season 6 Pt 2 – Mawr Vikings!

Your Honor – Weathered Brian Cranston is a judge whose son is involved in a car accident with some mob fellas in New Orleans. What’s he gonna do?!

Zeroville – A bald James Franco directs and stars in this tale of a fella who arrives in LA the same day that the Manson Murders take place. Sounds like Once Upon a Time in Hollywood Jr.

The Black Dog Video Newsletter: Summer Hours Edition!

With the light staying late longer (that make sense?) we’d thought it would be a good idea to adjust the hours of operation to fit the season. Not a big move – Black Dog will now be open until 9pm Thursday – Sunday (8pm Monday – Wednesday). We hope that this pleases you.

New Releases!

The Deuce: Season 3 – Season three of this great, gritty, sleazy slice of NY.

French Exit – Comedy/drama finds Michelle Pfieffer moving to Paris with her cat and her son after inheritance starts to run dry. Watch out for all the dog poop!

Happy New Year, Colin Burstead – Family dramatic drama from Ben Wheatley (Kill List, High Rise) finds a guy named Colin hiring a lavish country estate for his family to celebrate New Year. Things, of course, don’t go very well. Be boring of they did.

Hemingway: A Film by Ken Burns – Hemingway gets the famed Ken Burns treatment (not as painful as it sounds).

Heavy Trip – Heavy metal comedy from Finland finds a band called Impaled Rektum going to a heavy metal festival. Hilarity, I presume, ensues. This looks pretty great.

Morgue – Dude gets locked in a morgue overnight. Spooky things happen. Or do they? Probably.

Night Walk – Mickey Roarke (who, more and more, looks like an Arby’s sandwich left out in the sun for a few days) stars in this prison drama set in the Arab world,

Spare Parts – An all-girl band, Ms. 45, is kidnapped, have their limbs removed and replaced with crazy weapons and forced to fight as Gladiators. Not a true story.

The Unhealer – Bullied teenager acquires some sort of superpowers that he uses for bloody revenge. Not a true story.

Vanquish – Retired Russian drug courier is forced back into action for ONE LAST JOB. Stars Morgan Freeman (or someone who vaguely looks like Morgan Freeman).

The World to Come – Nice looking romantic drama about two women finding each other in the rough-living (and loving!) upstate New York of the 1850s.
