Black Dog Video Newsletter September 6-12 “End of Summer Edition”
It’s dark and cool out, the kids are back in school (yay!), leaves are falling on the ground and some fine Porters and Stouts are making their way into my fridge. It must mean that summer is over and sweet autumn is upon us. Yes, I know that summer is officially here for a few more weeks, but symbolically it seems over. It was good while it lasted but let’s welcome the most wonderful time of the year.
Oh, and don’t forget our big DVD sale coming your way on the 17th of September! Info, courtesy of the lovely and talented RJ at Cambie St, can be found at the bottom of the newsletter.
New Releases!
All the Way – Breaking Bad plays LBJ as he takes over the presidency from freshly assassinated JFK and attempts to get the CRA (Civil Rights Act ) passed in this fine docudrama.
The Darkness – Yummy Kevin Bacon takes his family to the Grand Canyon for some fine adventures. Unfortunately he returns home with a malevolent spirit bent on their destruction. Sounds a bit like that “Taboo” episode of The Brady Bunch, but with Bacon.
Churchill’s Secret – The great Michael Gambon is Winston Churchill who keeps the fact he had a stroke in 1953 a secret form the world (I was hoping the secret was that he was an alien or something!). Damn, I guess I should have said spoiler alert!
Equals – In a dystopian future where there are no emotions to be had, an attractive young couple fall in love. Is their love frowned upon or even persecuted? Who knows?! Not me!
Love and Friendship – Very good and very funny take on the Jane Austen classic finds Kate Beckinsdale and Chloe Sevigny cavorting around a country estate in 1790’s England playing matchmaker and stuff.
The Meddler – Widower Susan Sarandon moves to LA to be near her daughter, Rose Byrne, and to “meddle” in her life. Comedy hijinks and dramatic life lessons, I presume, ensue.
Money Monster – Jodie Foster directs the Clooney and Julia Roberts in this hostage type drama that finds George being held hostage in his TV studio by a guy who lost everything to the Wall St criminals. Bastardos!
Nina – Nice bio-pic of Nina Simone, as played by Zoe Saldana. Keep an eye out for the fabulous doc, What Happened, Miss Simone, hitting the shelves very soon!
The People vs O.J. Simpson – If you haven’t had enough OJ following the excellent ESPN doc, check out this well-received TV mini-series. I was hoping that this would be campy and fun but it looks pretty darn serious.
Shetland – Over across the pond, a Shetland pony solves crimes in the small town…what was that? It’s not about a pony? It takes place in the small island town of Shetland? And it’s a human who solves crimes? Well, I’ll be hornswoggled!
