Black Dog Video Newsletter August 15 – 21 “Smoky Smoke Edition!”

If it’s August then the province must be on fire. Seems that this is the new norm now. But, hey, more pipelines! While the world burns it’s best to grab some fine home entertainment and stay inside (the weather app actually says the weather is “smoke”). We finally got most of the films mentioned in last week’s missive (sorry for the delay). Also, there’s more fabulous things for you arriving this week! Life is good, no? Note – there will not be a newsletter next week as I’m taking a week off to enjoy the great smoky outdoors.

New Releases!

Atlanta – Excellent TV series starring the excellent Donald Glover as a dude and his buddies try to make up the ladder in the Atlanta rap scene. Up the rap ladder. Maybe that’s a better name?

Deadpool 2– More hi-jinks starring Canada’s other favourite Ryan as the masked hero who cracks wise as he’s cracking skulls. Word has it that it’s even better than the first one (which was pretty good).

Incident in Ghostland – From the director of Martyrs (the excellent, harrowing French film, not the crappy American remake) comes this horror number about the strange goings-ons in a house where a couple of sisters reunite 16 years after a nasty house invasion. On the shelves Thursday at Commercial, Friday at Cambie.

Lowlife – Crazy-sounding, but with swell reviews, flick finds an addict, and ex-con and a luchador getting mixed up in the wacky world of organ harvesting. On the shelves Thursday at Commercial, Friday at Cambie.

Meditation Park – Great new film from local film-making hero (and good friend of the store), Mina Shum, finds an aging woman questioning her life when she thinks her husband might be having an affair. If you live in Vancouver this is a must-watch. If you live elsewhere, this is a must-watch.

Mr. Mercedes: Season 1 – David E Kelly (Big Little Lies, Ally McBeal) adapts the Stephen King novel into a TV series about a psycho who drives his Mercedes into a crowd of people and is then pursued by a tough grizzled cop. Word has it that its a quite good horror thriller dealie. On the shelves Thursday at Commercial, Friday at Cambie.

Shock and Awe – Political drama starring Woody Harrelson that delves into the Bush and Co. (remember those turd blossoms?) run up to war as they lie to the world about Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction. Can some skeptical journalists uncover the truth and stop the war? Watch and find out! On the shelves Thursday at Commercial, Friday at Cambie.

Smithereens – This classic punk film from 1982 gets the lovely Criterion treatment. On the shelves Thursday at Commercial, Friday at Cambie.

Spinning Man – Guy Pearce, Pierce Brosnan and, um, Minnie Driver (who I assume has at least one piercing) star in this thriller about an amorous college professor who is a suspect when a college co-ed (do folks still say that?) goes missing.

Westworld Season 2 – The second season of this fine sci-fi western thriller.

Wilding – A supernatural “what’s the f*#k is happening to my body” horror-thriller. A young woman uncovers a dark secret about her traumatic childhood. What could it be? Is she a mermaid? A space alien? A relative of Donald Trump? Ahhhh! On the shelves Thursday at Commercial, Friday at Cambie.

That’s it for this week, folks. Stay out of the air – pro tip for you – only breathe out, never in – and come on down and rent some movies. It would help us out a lot in this slow season. Talk at you in a couple…
