Black Dog Newsletter Nov 21-27 “Hunky-Dory Edition!”
Everything is fine. Right? Good. Now look at all the great new films we have on the shelves for your viewing pleasure!
New Releases
Brand New Testament – So it seems that God is a grumpy old man living in Brussels with his very opinionated young daughter. Hi-jinks, I presume, ensue in this crowd-pleasing comedy.
Churchill – Another movie about Churchill (Winston) finds old Winnie the British Bulldog grappling with the enormity of Operation Overlord (invasion of France) in 1944.
The Fall Season 3 – The conclusion to the excellent, heavy, dramatic police drama that finds Scully on the trail of a nasty sexual predator played by 50 Shades of Grey.
Good Time – Well-received thriller finds the sparkly Twilight vampire Robert Pattison trying to keep his mental patient brother out of jail after a heist goes wrong.
Hitman’s Bodyguard – Sam Jackson and Deadpool are a hit-man and a body guard (not too sure which is which) in this screwball action comedy. You’re on your own with this one.
I Do…Until I Don’t – Fake documentary comedy written by, directed by and starring Lake Bell about marriage and, like, what’s up with that? The thesis is what if marriage were a 7-year contract with an option to renew? Hilarity, I presume, ensues.
Kedi – Lovely little documentary about cats that live on the streets of Istanbul and how they are mostly loved and well taken care of. Stars Bengu, Deniz and Duman.
Logan Lucky – Steven Soderburgh is back, baby! But did he ever really go away? Doesn’t matter, I’ve pretty much liked everything this guy has ever done. Here’s a comedy crime thriller about some dudes – Channing Tatum, Adam Driver and Daniel Craig – who decide to pull off a heist at at NASCAR racing place.
The Only Living Boy in New York – Dude has a thing for his Dad’s mistress. Should make for an interesting Thanksgiving dinner.
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets – Luc Besson’s sci-fi extravaganza sure looks pretty. A dark force threatens the universe or something and, as usual, it’s up to a couple of teenagers to save everyone.
The Villainess – Cool-looking South Korean revenge thriller (no one does revenge quite like South Korea) about a female assassin who leaves a trail of bodies in her wake while trying to slake her thirst for revenge. I think there might be a little knife work in this one as the IMDB warnings include: stabbed in the head, stabbed in the chest, stabbed in the throat and stabbed in the foot, among other things. Yes please!
