Black Dog Newsletter February 21 – 27 “Fancy Awards Edition!”

Well the time is upon us once again as Hollywood strokes its, um, ego, ya ego, this Sunday with the 147th Academy Awards. I’ve only seen 2 of the best picture nominees and both I thought were quite good. Arrival was my pick for best film of 2016 so I hope it wins. But in all honesty, I don’t really care. My life will not be affected in any way shape or form no matter who wins. I just like movies! We just acquired a couple more films this week that are up for the top spot, so come on in and check them out!

We’ve also just picked up a bunch of awesome Criterions (will be on the Cambie shelves tomorrow) for your enjoyment! Photo below to see what we have for you.

New Releases!

1:54 – Tough little French Canadian flick about the pressures of high school and all that that entails. Namely being gay, bullies, peer pressure, suicide, drugs, athletics, finding a monkey’s paw and making three fateful, ironic wishes (I may have made that last part up).

All Through the House – “There was a creature stirring”…I knew it! Fun (from what I’ve gleaned) 80’s style slasher throwback finds a Santa-mask wearing killer slashing and dashing his way through a small California town. Maybe it will become a holiday classic along the lines of Black Christmas, Christmas Evil and It’s a Wonderful Life!

Allied – Brad Pitt plays a sexy Canadian intelligence officer (I’ll leave you with that one) who hooks up with the lovely and talented Marion Cotillard to perform some secret mission behind enemy lines. Oh, I should mention that it’s a WWII action/drama/romance.

Certain Women – Another fine film from director Kelly Reichardt (Old Joy, Wendy and Lucy) finds three certain women – Michelle Williams, K-Stew and Laura Dern – intersecting in a small town in America. Heard very very good things about this one.

Hacksaw Ridge – Mad Mel Gibson and his mighty beard direct this true-life tale of a guy in WWII who didn’t want to fight or kill people but still did a fine job on the battlefield. I don’t think I’d want to go to a place called Hacksaw Ridge in WWII. Maybe Golden Daisy Fields, but not Hacksaw Ridge. Up for best picture this Sunday.

Klown Forever – Those knuckle-heads, Frank and Casper are at it again, making inappropriate mayhem wherever they go. This time it’s on a journey to LA. If you’ve seen and enjoyed Klown (I know I certainly did), my guess is that you’ll see and enjoy Klown Forever.

Manchester by the Sea – Highly touted (look at all the touts!) drama with lots of acting and words and stuff about an uncle having to look after his nephew after the boy’s dad dies. It should do fairly well come this Sunday (Oscars!)

Men & Chicken – Weird comedy from the director of Adam’s Apples finds the always wonderful Mads Mikkeleson as one of two brothers who learns the awful truth about their family. I wonder what that could be? Does it have something to do with chickens? Are they chicken men? My mind can’t handle this!

The Monster – From the director of the pretty creepy, The Strangers, comes this nifty little horror number about a woman and her daughter having to survive the terrors of a monster in the woods when their car breaks down at a really bad spot. Some people have the worst luck.
