The Black Dog Newsletter “Many Thanks Edition!”

Just wanted to give a nice big greasy thank you to all who donated to help out our buddy, Danse, after the passing of his brother, Frank. The in-store donations, combined with Dylan’s Facebook birthday charity hoo-haw ,helped to raise a nice chunk of change for Danse (just north of $700!). Hoping that it helps him get by.

Also, wanted to let you know that there’s
a) a new podcast episode up and running! Dylan, Alex and I take a look into the mind of Brian De Palma and his fine film Body Double!
b) there’s a new episode of my “Films I Should Have Seen by Now” series where I discuss (briefly) a couple of early David Lynch efforts.

The Black Dog Newsletter: So Long, Frank Edition!

(As written by Dylan) I, like many Commercial Drive residents and regulars, am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our friend Frank. Frank and his brother Danse have been regular fixtures on Commercial Drive, harmlessly camped out (for lack of a better description) out front of our video store in the morning. A little messy…(read more)

(We will be accepting cash, debit donations at the shop – 1470 Commercial Drive – and e-transfer – to help out Danse.)

New Releases

Barb and Star go to Vista Del Mar – Nice, funny comedy (ain’t those the best kind?!) finds Barb and Star leaving home for the first time and going to the title location where they get mixed up in all kinds of hi-jinks!

Coming Home Again – Family drama from Wayne Wang about aging and cooking delicious foods.

I Blame Society – What does it take to get a movie made in this town?! Murder perhaps? A murder most foul? Perhaps?

Love Sarah – Woman opens a bake shop in Notting Hill. Film at 11.

Memories of Murder – Excellent police procedural thriller from the fella who made Parasite. Criterion Blu Ray release.

My Salinger Year – Young woman gets a job going through JD Salinger’s fan mail. I wonder how much underwear she finds there?

Pinocchio – From the fella who brought us the excellent Gomorrah and Dogman comes yet another telling of the famous tale of a wooden boy whose nose gets longer when he tells a lie. Insert depraved joke here.

Brothers by Blood – Large hunky men abound in this Philadelphia mob movie.

The Dark and The Wicked – Pretty good and scary affair finds a couple of siblings returning to their family farm to help out with dying dad. Things don’t go well.

Death Ranch – Great title (give me a film with “monkey” or “ranch” in the title and I’m sold!)! A trio of African-American siblings are on the run from some cannibalistic KKK cultists. As if regular KKK half-wits weren’t bad enough!

The Black Dog Video Newsletter: Just Watch Us Edition!

The Black Dog Video Newsletter: Watch Us Edition!

As promised, we’ve begun to add swell new content to our new website – – and our Youtube channel. I’ve started doing a little piece (hopefully once a week) titled Films I Should Have Seen By Now in which I reveal some films that, well, I should have seen by now but for various reason have not. Check it out!

We’re also going to be adding a merch section to the new site just as soon as we get some merch! Looking at items such as mugs, hats, pins – that sort of thing – to go along with our famous T-Shirts. Any suggestions on things you’d like to see, let me know!

New Releases!

(should be on the shelves today or tomorrow)

Acasa, My Home – Fascinating doc about a family living in the delta outskirts of Bucharest for 20 years who were then forced to relocate to the big city. Be a bit of an adjustment, me thinks. Wonder if there’s still a video store in Romania?

Another Round – Mads Mikkelson is a teacher who, with four of his colleagues, tests a theory that by maintaining a certain level of booze in the system, it will improve their lives. Hmmm, sounds like a good test to me. I’ll get back to you.

Preparations to be Together for an Unknown Period of Time – Cool-looking, nourish mystery follows a woman who returns home to Budapest to be with her new lover but only to have the new lover claim to have never met her! Something’s afoot!

Rams – Sam Neill is a sheep farmer who is in a decades-long feud with his neighbor. Also a sheep farmer. Sheep-related hi-jinks, I presume, ensue.

Shadow in the Cloud – Strange, but cool, sounding mash-up of action, WWII and horror finds a female pilot encountering an evil presence on the B-17 she’s flying on. Or in. Not too sure which one is correct.
