The Black Dog Video Newsletter: The New Deal Edition!

The Black Dog Video Newsletter: The New Deal Edition!

So as we trundle on into this dank future void of existence, I thought to brighten these gloomy days we’d bring back our 2 for 1 Monday deal! Starting Monday Feb 1, pop into Black Dog Video and rent 2 for 1 movies! Any and every title in the shop! Thumbs up!

New Releases!

Doom Patrol S2 – The adventures of the mad scientist and his weirdo super-powered outcasts continues!

Epicentro – Nice-looking documentary about the lovely country of Cuba and how movies have helped shape our perceptions of it.

Jungleland – Two brothers travel the lands hooking up for no holds barred boxing matches. Sounds like fun!

Let Him Go – A older couple set off to find their grandson following the death of their son. Sounds like fun!

Love, Weddings and Other Disasters – Comedyish movie about people who put together other folk’s weddings. I like Jeremy Irons except when he smiles.

The Village in the Woods – Village full of crazy weirdos must attract unsuspecting victims to feed on or something like that. Sounds like my last vacation.

Wild Mountain Thyme – Romantic type of affair with good looking people traipsing around Ireland. Think Hamm. John Hamm. Delicious.

Coming Soon!

(most have arrived on in the shop!)

The Expanse S4
Miss Juneteenth
Sea Fever
Rudeboy: Story of Trojan Records
The Savage is Loose

I’m also putting out feelers for folks that want to buy films. Wanting to know what kind of things y’all might be interested in? DVD? Blu Ray? 4K? We can offer great prices (better than Scamazon) and you won’t have to feel guilty buying from Dr. Evil.

One of my projects for this year (actually started it last year) is to watch older films that I should have seen by now but for whatever reason, I just haven’t. If you’re interested, check out my ongoing list here (plus ratings and tiny reviews). Feel free to follow, comment and make fun of me if you like.

Have a great week. Stay warm. Stay squishy. Keep watching.

The Black Dog Video Newsletter: The Horror, The Horror Edition!

Now that Trump has finally been imprisoned in space and the 4 year-long nightmare is over, along comes something even scarier! Here’s a list of the 20 best horror films (I love horror if you didn’t already know) that I saw in 2020! Read here if you dare.

New Releases!

12 Hour Shift – Comedy-horror-thriller-chiller about a drugged out nurse and her cousin trying to find a replacement kidney for an organ trafficker. Bloody hi-jinks, I presume, ensue.

Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets – Well received (many best of year lists) doc about the last dying days of a run-down bar in Vegas. Blu Ray only.

Come Away – Kind of a modern day Alice in Wonderland type of affair.

Come Play – Larry the monster comes out of your smart devices. Kind of a sequel to Come Away I assume.

Crash – David Cronenberg’s fun film about sex and car crashes gets the Criterion treatment!

Dogs Don’t Wear Pants – A fellas wife dies, so naturally he gets REALLY into the S and M scene – with various degrees of success. I liked this one!

Kid Detective – Comedy-drama-mystery about a former kid detective (whatever that is) who is now an adult and faced with his first adult case. Heard good things about this!

Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story – Amazing concert tour story from the seventies when Bob was at the height of his powers. Top notch Scorsese fun! Criterion DVD and Blu Ray.

True History of the Kelly Gang – New telling of the famous (only?) Australian gang in the old west.

Wander – Thriller with Aaron Eckhart and the always-grizzled Tommy Lee Jones about a mentally unstable private dick.

Words on Bathroom Walls – Teen tragic-romance thing about a guy, recently diagnosed with some mental illness, who falls for an inspiring smart girl. Seems that this is a genre now.

The Black Dog Newsletter: Best of the Year (2020) Edition!

The Black Dog Newsletter: Best of the Year Edition!

Although it seems strange to write the words “Best of” for such a wretched year, it is my duty to press on with our picks for the best in movies and such for 2020.

But before we get to that, a public service announcement! If you’re looking to unload your DVD collection or know someone who is, give us a buzz. We purchase or give store credit for select items and welcome any and all donations. It helps us to keep on keepin’ on. Thank you.

Onto our regularly scheduled program…

2020 was a messed up year in many regards and the film industry did not go unscathed. Many big titles were pushed back until 2021 so we were left scrambling to find as many interesting smaller films to offer you fine folks as we could. And we uncovered some gems. Here is the Black Dog staff’s picks for the year…

Sorry We Missed You
The Gentlemen
Come to Daddy
Colour out of Space
Wild Pear Tree

Why Don’t You Just Die!

And here’s a small list of the worst films I suffered through in 2020.

2020 was also a year that I discovered old gems and re-watched many classics. When the pandemic started we did a film appreciation class with my kid. Here’s what we watched.

I hope that this year is better in a lot of ways, not just obvious ones. Here’s to 12 months of great cinema and keeping the dream alive!
