You read that right, we have some crazy deals coming up this weekend – Saturday, Sunday and Monday! Over yonder at Cambie we have a big rack of $3 DVDs. Buy 2 and pay $5 but if you buy 10 (ten) you will only pay $10! Zoinks! Also all of our $5 titles can be snarfed up at a 2 for 1 holiday special deal (at both locations!)! And don’t even get me started on box sets! Come enjoy whatever made-up holiday that we’re celebrating this weekend at your favourite local Black Dog!

And if that wasn’t enough, there’s a new podcast episode ready and willing to bore into your ears and delight your funny brains. Check it out here!

New Releases!

Ash is the Purest White – Another excellent film from Zhangke Jia (A Touch of Sin) as this one follows two lovers who are involved in some mob stuff and whatnot over the course of 17 years. Get up on it!

Daughter of Mine – Lovely Italian drama about a daughter torn between two moms – biological and the one who raised her. That’s a spicy meatball!

El Chicano – Twin brothers living in East LA choose very different career paths. I’m going to guess Lion Tamer and Hand Model!

Long Shot – Seth Rogan is grubby schlub Fred Flarsky who becomes the speechwriter and, somehow, romantic fella for presidential hopeful Charlize Theron. Comedy hijinks, I presume, ensue.

Lu Over the Wall – Delightful (it’s full of delight!) Japanese animation number about a gloomy girl who befriends a mermaid.

The Public – Emilio Estavez directs most of Hollywood in this drama about homeless folks taking over the public library on a cold night in Cincinnati.

The Black Dog Video Newsletter July 23-29 “Lazy Daze Edition!”

Yes it’s hot. Stay frosty. Enough said. But check out these cool tentative, plans for a new people space over in the Cambie Hood. What a fantastic idea! Anything that gets more folks out of their cars and on foot is a good thing in my opinion. Makes the neighborhood that much more livable.

If any of you lovely folks (or any friends, neighbors, enemies) have a working DVD or Blu Ray player that you want to get rid of, drop it off at Black Dog Video! We’ll make good use of it. (We also take dvd donations!)

Hellboy – I’m not too sure that we needed a new Hellboy but sometimes you get what you don’t ask for.

Best of Enemies – Civil rights activist Ann Atwater faces off against C.P. Ellis, Exalted Cyclops of the KKK (boy those idiots are weird), in 1971, North Carolina over the issue of school integration. Sam Rockwell seems to be doing OK for himself playing racist monsters as of late.

The Black Dog Newsletter June 11-17 “Mermaid Ave Edition!”

Whew! Italian Days are behind us once again. It was a zoo – 300,000 humans walking around the Drive. So many people. One bright spot was in front of a little shop known as Black Dog Video there was a real live mermaid chillin’! (Thanks, Tristan Risk!) Cool.

We will probably be adjusting the store hours in the next couple of weeks as summer rolls in. Something along the lines of opening later in the afternoon and possibly remaining open later in the evening. Stay tuned.

New Releases!

Gloria Bell – Gloria Bell is Julianne Moore, a free-spirited woman in her 50’s who rocks the L.A. dance club scene. From Oscar winner Sebastián Lelio (A Fantastic Woman).

Her Smell – Unfortunately titled film finds Elizabeth Moss as a self-destructive punk rocker. Is there any other kind?

I am The Night – One of the Captain Kirk’s (Pine Kirk) is a gumshoe who teams up with an orphan woman to, hopefully, solve the Black Dahlia murder case in this fine TV shoe.

JT Leroy – Strange, true tale of a woman who impersonated a made-up author for 6 years. Or something like that. Looks pretty cool.

Knife + Heart – Take one helping of Bava, a dash of Lynch and two fingers of Anger, mix well and serve up this gay giallo inspired mystery. Knock it back in one gulp.

Woman at War – An Icelandic woman goes to battle against a big polluting aluminum factory! Who’s gonna win?!

New Releases!

The Bookshop – Nice little film finds nice little Emily Mortimer opening a nice little bookshop in the year 1959 in, you guessed it, a nice little English town. Nice.

Climax – Gaspar Noe (Enter the Void) smashes his way back onto the screen with this gloriously insane dance-rehearsal-goes-off-the-rails-when-someone-spikes-the-punch-with-LSD film. Ruh-roh! The dancing is mind-blowing as is this rest of this wonderful piece of insanity. One of my favourites of 2018. Not for all tastes but mine for sure!

Dave Made a Maze – Odd but fun sounding film finds Dave, a frustrated artist, who builds a big fort in his living room but then has trouble finding a way out. I imagine that other things happen as well.

Holiday – Tough, some will say unpleasant, film about a love triangle gone bad involving gangsters and drug lords and a trophy girlfriend. Warnings of sexual assaults and more violence abound. Heard that it’s very good, though you’ve been warned.

Listen to Me Marlon – Great documentary about the fine actor known to many as Marlon Brando. “Whatcho talkin’ about, Stella?!”

Miss Bala – Remake of the Mexican film with the same name finds Gloria unwittingly being drawn into the world of cross-border crime. Oh, Gloria!

No Date, No Signature – Mystery from Iran finds a forensic pathologist coming across the body of someone he was in a car accident the day before. Did he kill this person? Or is there a greater mystery afoot?

One Sings, The Other Doesn’t – Criterion release of one of the late, great Agnes Varda’s films about a couple of women who’s lives become entwined in the 1970’s. Expect great things.

Voting ends on Friday and you can vote up to 5 times a day (do it!). Please help them and us out and share it all across the land! Much obliged!

New Releases!

Big Brother – Donnie Yen (the best!) is a soldier turned high-school teacher who kicks butt! Think of Dead Poets Society getting into bed with Ip Man and making a weird, kung fu baby.

Captive State – Aliens have taken over the planet. That was 10 years ago. What’s everyone up to now? John Goodman leads the way.

Counterpart – Cool sounding TV show that stars J.K. Simmons (J. Jonah Jamison) as a guy who discovers a portal to another dimension where he’s a top spy doing top spy work during the Cold War.

Ip Man: Origins – Watch IP Man when he was a little kid! IP Boy? More kicked-in-the-face mayhem for those of you, like myself, who dig it.

Jack Ryan Season 1 – Jim Halpert is the new Jack Ryan! Pretty good espionage and terrorist and thrills show.

The Man Who Killed Don Quixote – Terry Gilliam finally completes his dream project that he started, like, 85 years ago. Better be good, Gilliam! (shakes fist). DVDs are here, blu rays on the way.

The Mustang – Nice drama about a tough convict, Matthias Schoenaerts, (who’s cornered the market on brooding) that gets a chance to rehabilitate himself by hanging out with some horses.

The Poison Rose – John Travolta is a private dick in this neo-noir thing that not only stars Morgan Freeman and Famke Jannsen but has three directors! So that must mean it’s really good, right?

A Vigilante – Olivia Wilde is a tough revenge-seeking vigilante (see title) who helps victims escape their scummy abusers.
