The Black Dog Newsletter June 25 – July 2 “Free Car Day Edition!”

So after a 10 year hiatus Black Dog Video will be back on the street for Car-Free Day on Commercial July 7th! Drop by and say hey, peruse that great movies and box sets we’ll have for sale and check out (re: buy) a cool T-shirt or two. We’ll (hopefully) be unveiling a sweet new design that day as well. Hope to see you there (if not in the stores before then).

New Releases!

Furie – Trying to retire from the gang-style life, a woman moves to the Vietnamese countryside only to have her daughter kidnapped. Time to kick some butt!

Haazussa – Cool witches in pagan times horror number from Germany. Yes please!

Hummingbird Project – Jesse Eisenberg, Alexander Skarsgård,(in a terrible looking bald cap) Salma Hayek conspire against one another in this stock trading thriller.

The Kid – Ethan Hawke, Chris Pratt and other actors act in this tale of Billy the Kidd and Pat Garrett.

Mary Shelley – 16 year-old Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin meets 21 year-old (ewww!) Percy Shelly and have a Frankenstein baby!

Patrick Melrose – Benedict Cumberbatch is a guy named the title of this show who does some drugs and then redeems himself. Supposed to be excellent.

Standoff at Sparrow Creek – Heavy drama about a former cop-turned-militia man who investigates a shooting at a police funeral.

Una – A woman (Rooney Mara) confronts an older man (Ben Mendelsohn), her former neighbour, to find out why he abandoned her after they had a sexual relationship. Seems to be an icky theme this week.

Under the Silver Lake – A dude sets off across LA on a weird journey to find a woman he met the night before who’s mysteriously vanished. From the guy who made the brilliant It Follows! Totes looking forward to this!

Valentine: Dark Angel – A waitress in a tough town gets turned into a superhero. I hope that it’s better than I made it sound.

Hotel Mumbai – Terrorists attack the Taj Hotel in Mumbai in 2008. You won’t believe what happens next!

Slaughterhouse Rulez – Horror-comedy about a sinkhole that develops on the grounds of a posh boarding school, unleashing unimaginable (I can imagine) horrors! Good cast – Michael Sheen, Margot Robbie, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, others – add to the shenanigans.

The Black Dog Newsletter June 11-17 “Mermaid Ave Edition!”

Whew! Italian Days are behind us once again. It was a zoo – 300,000 humans walking around the Drive. So many people. One bright spot was in front of a little shop known as Black Dog Video there was a real live mermaid chillin’! (Thanks, Tristan Risk!) Cool.

We will probably be adjusting the store hours in the next couple of weeks as summer rolls in. Something along the lines of opening later in the afternoon and possibly remaining open later in the evening. Stay tuned.

New Releases!

Gloria Bell – Gloria Bell is Julianne Moore, a free-spirited woman in her 50’s who rocks the L.A. dance club scene. From Oscar winner Sebastián Lelio (A Fantastic Woman).

Her Smell – Unfortunately titled film finds Elizabeth Moss as a self-destructive punk rocker. Is there any other kind?

I am The Night – One of the Captain Kirk’s (Pine Kirk) is a gumshoe who teams up with an orphan woman to, hopefully, solve the Black Dahlia murder case in this fine TV shoe.

JT Leroy – Strange, true tale of a woman who impersonated a made-up author for 6 years. Or something like that. Looks pretty cool.

Knife + Heart – Take one helping of Bava, a dash of Lynch and two fingers of Anger, mix well and serve up this gay giallo inspired mystery. Knock it back in one gulp.

Woman at War – An Icelandic woman goes to battle against a big polluting aluminum factory! Who’s gonna win?!

We also have a certain marvelous film on the shelves for your enjoyment!

New Releases!

The Bookshop – Nice little film finds nice little Emily Mortimer opening a nice little bookshop in the year 1959 in, you guessed it, a nice little English town. Nice.

Climax – Gaspar Noe (Enter the Void) smashes his way back onto the screen with this gloriously insane dance-rehearsal-goes-off-the-rails-when-someone-spikes-the-punch-with-LSD film. Ruh-roh! The dancing is mind-blowing as is this rest of this wonderful piece of insanity. One of my favourites of 2018. Not for all tastes but mine for sure!

Dave Made a Maze – Odd but fun sounding film finds Dave, a frustrated artist, who builds a big fort in his living room but then has trouble finding a way out. I imagine that other things happen as well.

Holiday – Tough, some will say unpleasant, film about a love triangle gone bad involving gangsters and drug lords and a trophy girlfriend. Warnings of sexual assaults and more violence abound. Heard that it’s very good, though you’ve been warned.

Listen to Me Marlon – Great documentary about the fine actor known to many as Marlon Brando. “Whatcho talkin’ about, Stella?!”

Miss Bala – Remake of the Mexican film with the same name finds Gloria unwittingly being drawn into the world of cross-border crime. Oh, Gloria!

No Date, No Signature – Mystery from Iran finds a forensic pathologist coming across the body of someone he was in a car accident the day before. Did he kill this person? Or is there a greater mystery afoot?

One Sings, The Other Doesn’t – Criterion release of one of the late, great Agnes Varda’s films about a couple of women who’s lives become entwined in the 1970’s. Expect great things.

Coming Soon!

Captain Marvel
Gloria Bell
I Am the Night
Her Smell
JT Leroy
Knife + Heart
Woman at War
