The Black Dog Newsletter Dec 19-31 “Christmas Hoo-Haw Edition!”

Here we are, the home stretch. Christmas is less than a week away. I suppose that I should mention our holiday hours!

Christmas Eve (24th) : 11 am – 6pm – That’s right, we’ll be open an hour earlier on the 24th for all your movie needs. We also have a nice deal – Rent 2 and get a 3rd for free! (sorry no 2 for 1 deals on the 24th or the 31st – gotta pay those bills!)
Christmas Day (25th) : Closed
New Year’s Eve (31st) : 12 – 7
New Year’s Day : 12 – 10pm

We still have some swell T-shirts and comfy hoodies left as well as gift certificates and our world-famous punch cards for everyone you love. We’ll also have boxing day sales – check out our website, Facebook and twitters for what’s happening. That all said, there won’t be a newsletter for the next 2 weeks. Sorry to be a Grunch (Grinch’s less pleasant cousin).

New Releases

(We’ve received 5 shipments of films in the last two weeks – the rest of the year’s films so I won’t list them all here as there’s just too many!)

Colette – Lovely costume bio-pic drama finds Colette ghost writing stories for her husband Willy. When they become a success, she fights for recognition among the societal constraints of the times.

Fahrenheit 11/9 – Micheal Moore is back at it again, this time examining just how in the hell America got to where they are now with you-know-who in the big chair.

The House with a Clock in It’s Walls – Odd sounding family spooky comedy thing from Eli Roth (!) has Jack Black as a wizard or something looking for a clock that might end the world. I’m sure it’s better than Death Wish.

Long Strange Trip: A Grateful Dead Tale – I would never have called myself a “Deadhead” but I did see about a half dozen shows back in the day and they were much fun. Looking forward to checking this big-ass documentary out!

McQueen – No, not about Steve McQueen (the actor nor the director) but Lee Alexander McQueen, fashion genius and his amazing and tragic tale.

The Predator – The Predator’s back! This time we find him working at an Old Navy, going to college and playing in a ska cover band on the weekends while at the same time ripping out the spines of horny teenagers to hang on his dorm walls.

Support The Girls – Hangout with the ladies at Double Whammies, “a sports bar with curves” in this nice little comedy that I’m seeing show up on a number of best of the year lists.

Sweet Country – Heavy Australian western drama thriller finds an aboriginal fella going on the lam after shooting a white guy in self defense. Something tells me that the title may be more than a little ironic.

White Boy Rick – Matthew McConaughey goes undercover in the drug world where it eventually takes over his life and he ends up on the wrong side of Johnny Law.

Other titles fresh and new and fresh on the shelves include: Whitney, Sinner Season 2, Finding Your Feet, Operation Finale, Bel Canto, The Domestics, Disorder, Western, Nocturama and a few more I may have forgot about. Whew!

Other titles showing up later this week include: Life Itself, A Simple Favour, D.O.A.: Right of Passage, Elizabeth Harvest, Galveston, Marfa Girl 2, Skate Kitchen, Molly.

Holy Hotdogs! What a huge pile of amazing things! I hope that you find something wonderful to enjoy this season. We have a great selection of Christmas flicks as well, if that’s your bag. If you need some suggestions, check out all of our swell lists here!

Have a great, safe, fun holiday you beautiful people you! Talk to you on the other side in the New Year!

The Black Dog Newsletter Dec 12-18 “Merry Podcast Edition!”

Tis the season for making merry. And we made some merry last week recording a special holiday edition of our podcast, Black Dog After Dark! Tune in and listen as Dylan, Alex and myself share a few festive ales and riff on the Christmas classic, The Ref.

And once again, deepest apologies for the delay in getting the new films. It seems that Purolator still hasn’t figured out this Christmas thing but everything is on the shelves today with two more shipments arriving either the end of this week or early next. Lots of tasty treats for your lovely eyes! Feast on it!

New Releases!

All the Creatures Were Stirring – Scary anthology holiday horror spook-fest. I love me some Christmas horror.

Equalizer 2 – What better way to celebrate the holidays then spending some time with Denzel Washington as he brutally equalizes a bunch of bad guys?

Hangman – What better way to celebrate the holidays then spending some time with Al Pacino and Karl Urban as they hunt down a vicious serial killer whose crimes are inspired by the kids game Hangman?

Jack Irish: Series 2 – See Jack Irish search for a missing person only to be framed for his murder. See Jack Irish get caught up in a web of powerful vested interests. See Jack Irish.

Lizzie – Chloe Sevingy is Lizze Borden who tries out the new axe she got for Christmas on her unsuspecting family. She also makes a new “friend” named Kristen Stewart.

The Orville: Season 1 – Comedy action space dealie from the sometimes hilarious Seth MacFarlane finds a hapless crew on their hapless space ship (no hap anywhere to be found) as they head out on the cosmic highway looking for adventure.

Peppermint – What better way to celebrate the holidays then spending some time with Jennifer Garner as she doles out bad-ass revenge-style punishment to those responsible for the death of her husband and child?

Smallfoot – Nice family affair about a Yeti who needs convincing that humans, aka Smallfoots, exist. Kids love Yetis!

Coming Soon!

Fahrenheit 11/9
House with a Clock in It’s Walls
Little Women
The Predator
The Sinner S2
White Boy Rick
Bel Canto
Long Strange Trip: Grateful Dead Story

We still have some T-shirts and Hoodies left but they are going fast! So if you need to stuff some stockings, hurry in. We also have studio Ghibli socks and gift certificates available for everyone you love (or are forced to buy for) as well!

The Black Dog Newsletter Dec 5-11 “Late For a Very Important Date Edition!”

Apologies for the lateness of this week’s shipment. It seems that Purolator was overwhelmed by Black Friday, Christmas, Black Christmas, Cthulhu, possibility of a mail strike, melting ice caps and maybe even a Swamp Thing. The films are on the shelves now but future shipments may also be delayed. It’s not like Christmas and such just kind of sneaked up on them this year. Good job!

New Releases!

Happytime Murders – Saucy puppets and Melissa McCarthy team up in this puppet-based murder show. Not for kids as rumours of graphic puppet sex and puppet on puppet violence abound.

Here to be Heard: The Story of the Slits – The title pretty much sums up this music documentary.

Ideal Home – From the director of Hamlet 2 and The Craft comes this nice comedy that finds gay couple Steve Coogan and Paul Rudd (not a gay couple in real life. At least I don’t think that they are) raising a 10 year-old for some reason. Hi-jinks, I presume, ensue.

In Harm’s Way – Dude has to bail out of his bomber after dropping his load on Tokyo after the Pearl Harbor attack. He’s recused by an attractive Japanese woman who hides him in her house. They fall in love or something.

Mission Impossible: Fallout – Might be the best Mission Impossible film to date! I’m not much of a Tom Cruise fan but I do enjoy these flicks and he runs a lot in them which is always entertaining for some reason. Plus it has a scene of Henry Cavill loading up his fists, getting ready to punch someone (you’ll laugh when you see it).

The Nun – The scary nun from The Conjuring 2 gets her own spin-off (kinda like Frazier but with creepy nuns!). Now she’s wandering the halls of a cloistered abbey in Romania scaring the bejeezus out of everyone and it’s up to a priest with a haunted past and a pretty young nun to figure it all out.

Never Goin’ Back – Hilarious and raunchy (from what I hear) comedy about a couple of teen-age high-school dropouts who decide to go to the beach. Give it a spin!

Sharp Objects – Excellent TV show directed by Jean-Marc Vallée and written by Gillian Flynn finds Amy Adams returning to her home town to investigate a murder while she fights some demons. Psychological demons, unfortunately.

Victoria Season 2 – More Queen shenanigans as a young and lovely Elizabeth ascends the throne.

What Keeps You Alive – Nice young newly married lesbian couple shuffle off to the mountains to enjoy everything. But what if one turns out to be a sadistic sociopath serial killer? Ask yourself that!

Coming Soon!

Equalizer 2
The Orville Season 1
All the Creatures Were Stirring
Jack Irish Season 2

Just a reminder – we have lovely Black Dog T-Shirts and Hoodies as well as Studio Ghibli socks, amazing Blu Rays from Shout Factory, Gift Certificates and many other cool things for sale at both locations! Christmas is coming! Stuff those stockings!
