Black Dog Newsletter September 26 – October 2nd “Ch-Ch-Changes Part Deux Edition!”

A couple more changes you’ll be seeing over at the Cambie Street Dog – the lovely and talented Bjorn is leaving the Black Dog nest to seek his fame and fortune abroad. He’ll be at the store until the end of next week so drop in and say goodbye, maybe even give him a hug. He loves hugs! You’ll be seeing more of me, for better or for worse, around those parts in addition to the two new recruits, Avash and Naomi. One other change – The Cambie store will be closing at 10pm on Sunday nights starting this coming Sunday, October 1st. We’ll be open until 11 the rest of the days of the week. Plan accordingly.

New Releases!

47 Meters Down – Some great white sharks are just chilling in the waters doing their shark things when some chum, er I mean people in the form of Mandy Moore and Claire Holt, are lowered into the water for them to eat. Problem is this food is in a cage that they must break into in order to enjoy their tasty treats! Good luck, sharks!

David Lynch: The Art of Life – Nice little doc (from Criterion no less!) about the one and only David Lynch and his process and approach to art and life and stuff.

The Little Hours – Comedy finds a handsome servant (the handsome Dave Franco) escaping from his master who takes refuge in a convent full of sexy, potty-mouthed nuns. Hilarity, I presume, ensues. Heard that this is pretty funny. Stars the Aubrey Plaza and Alison Brie.

Tale of Love and Darkness – Natalie Portman stars, writes and directs this heavy-duty drama about writer, Amos Oz, and his upbringing during the early years of the newly formed Israeli state.

Transformers – The Last Knight – More incomprehensible eye garbage from Michael Bay (still doesn’t have his own spot in our director’s section!). I’m sure that this one is as good as all the other ones. Somehow they managed to snag Sir Lord Anthony Hopkins to be in this thing.

Coming Soon!

Portlandia Season 7
The Vietnam War
Better Call Saul Season 3
Soundbreaking: Stories form the Cutting Edge of Music
Pirates of the Caribbean
Book of Henry
A Ghost Story

Have a great week, folks. Stay warm, eat well, hug Bjorn and keep watching!

Black Dog Video Newsletter September 19-25 “Times are a Changin’ Edition!”

So big changes are going down over at the Cambie location! This week will see the departure of both Becky and Mike as they’ll be moving on to bigger and better things! We will be welcoming Avash and Naomi into the Black Dog family. Make them feel welcome and at home please.

New Releases!

The Bad Batch – From the woman who made the fine vampire flick, Girl Who Walks Home Alone at Night, comes this almost really good tale of Arlen, a young woman banished to the wastelands of a future Texas inhabited by cannibals and Keanu Reeves. The first act is outstanding but then it falls apart a bit near the end.

The Big Sick – Excellent comedy/drama finds a Pakistani guy falling for a white grad student. Culture clashes, a mysterious illness and some tough parents liven up the proceedings.

Bluebeard – A dude begins to suspect that his landlord and son are actually serial killers in this fine looking thriller from South Korea. Never trust your landlord.

I, Daniel Blake – A guy who recently suffered a heart attack must fight the bureaucratic forces that be to get the help that he needs in this latest heavy-duty drama from Ken Loach. Dylan over at Commercial says it’s the best film of 2017 so far! A bold statement.

It Comes at Night – As an unnatural threat looms outside, a couple of families struggle to maintain a sense of civility inside their desolate house. Or something like that. Heard very good things about this little shocker.

Mune – French animated family fare finds a faun named Mune being put in charge of the moon’s well being. Some other things happen as well.

The Other Side – Fascinating, maybe even somewhat disturbing to some, documentary about some gun and drug obsessed misfits who live on the fringes of Louisiana society. RJ over at Cambie says it’s outstanding and that you should put this one on your list.

Wonder Woman – Gal Gadot is Wonder Woman in this actiony-type adventure! I’ve heard that this is actually quite good.

Coming Soon!

47 Metres Down
The Devil’s Candy
Pirates of the Caribbean
Book of Henry
Ghost Story
American Horror Story S 6
Cult of Chucky

Black Dog Newsletter September 12 – 18 “We’re On It Edition!”

In response to the survey that many of you kindly filled out – thanks again – one thing that we’re going to try and do better is bring in more interesting smaller films of high quality. I have my crack staff combing the globe for the best in what cinema has to offer. The cool titles have already started rolling in!

Oh I should also mention, those LED and Glow-in-the-Dark fidget spinners I ordered back in May finally showed up and are on sale at the Commercial store. And they’re cheap! If anyone want some at Cambie, I can bring them over. Just let me know.

New Releases!

After the Storm – From the great Kore-eda (Like Father Like Son, Nobody Knows) comes this, some might say timely, drama about a guy getting reacquainted with his estranged family following a big storm. Of course this will be excellent.

Ash v Evil Dead Season 2 – Another wonderful season finds the wonderful Bruce Campbell fighting off those pesky Deadites in season 2 of this fine, fun show!

Captain Underpants – A couple of pranksters hypnotize their principal into believing he’s famed, dim-witted superhero, Captain Underpants. I remember reading this stuff to my sprog when he was of age. Good for the young-ins.

Deutschland 83 – Excellent Cold-War thriller TV show finds a plucky 24 year-old dude from East Germany infiltrating the West German army in 1983. Heard nothing but great things.

Living is Easy with Eyes Closed – Very nice Spanish film about a teacher who picks up a couple of hitchhiker’s on his way to, hopefully, meet John Lennon. Sounds like one of those fine life-changing, crowd-pleasing, road-trip movies popular at film festivals.

Lowriders – No, not a movie about those sexy low-cut pants but a tough family drama set in the low-rider car-culture of East Los Angeles.

Megan Leavey – Kate Mara stars with a smart dog in this true-story about a soldier and her smart dog performing heroic feats in Iraq. Not too sure who Megan Leavey is. I hope that’s the dog’s name.

The Mummy – Tom Cruise tries to jump-start the Universal Monster series with this tepid re-telling of the mummy tale. Look for this one to show up on many worst of the year lists.

Neither Heaven Nor Earth – Cool-looking mystery chiller about some French soldiers in Afghanistan who start to disappear into the desert with no explanation. Spooky!

Raw – Fun-looking horror film about a vegetarian who develops an insatiable taste for the meat after undergoing a traumatic hazing ritual at a vet school. Pop this into your player, throw a couple of steaks on the barbie (rare, please!), sit back and dig in!

Swallows and Amazons – Family fare finds some children on holiday who start a “war” with some other children on an island. Ah, kids and their war games. Based on the book of the same name.

This is Us Season 1 – Much acclaimed TV series follows a bunch of people, all with the same birthdays for some reason, who cross paths throughout their lives.

Coming Soon!

Wonder Woman
It Comes at Night
The Bad Batch
The Big Sick
The Dinner
The Other Side
Tale of Love and Darkness

With back to school fall-ness in the air I thought I should mention that we have some swell lunch boxes to carry your edibles in! How cool would you look with one of these?!

Have a great week, y’all. Talk soon. xoxo

Black Dog Video Newsletter Sept. 5-11 “Back to School Edition!”

The kids are back in school (and there was much rejoicing!), the air is thick with smoke and the New Releases are a bit thin – must be the first week of September! I’m not too sure why but this particular week has traditionally been slow for new stuff. But don’t fret! There’s piles of great titles on the way! Might be a good time to brush up on some fine older fare?

New Releases!

All Eyez on Me – Nice-looking bio-pic (if bio-pics are your thang) about rapper icon fella Tupac Shakur. Not starring a hologram but an actual human! I assume the movie explains why “Eyez” is spelling with a Z?

Broadchurch Season 3 – Cool beans! A fine, if not a bit grim from what I’ve been told, new season of this most excellent show!

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks – Oprah (Winfrey) stars in this bio-pic (for those who enjoy bio-pics) about an African-American woman who unwittingly became a pioneer in the medical field when her cells were used to create the first immortal cell line in the 1950s. The future, today!

The Last Face – A couple of good-looking, well meaning folks – Charlize and Javier – work and romance together in Africa while trying to do some good. Directed by Sean Penn.

Silicon Vally Season 4 – A fine season 4 for this fine, funny show. Check out the Daniel Clowes box art!

Veep Season 6 – A fine season 6 for this fine, funny show! If only Daniel Clowes did the box art!

The Mummy
This is Us S1
Megan Leavey
It Comes at Night
City of Tiny Lights
The Dinner
