Black Dog Video Newsletter December 19-25 “Winter is Here Edition!”

It’s less than a week until the only day of the year that we’re closed! We’ll be open Noon until 6pm on Sunday (Christmas Eve) and closed on Christmas Day. Make your plans accordingly. And of course, don’t forget to shamble on down to the stores, not only to get some fine films, but to grab some lovely gifts for the ones you love or your family. We’ve got gift certificates, hoodies, t-shirts, Studio Ghibli merch, cool mugs and lunch boxes, other stuff! I’m still debating whether or not to do a newsletter next week, but if one doesn’t show up, please don’t freak out.

New Releases!

Brawl in Cell Block 99 – Vince Vaughn must fight his way through a bunch of tough guys in prison for some reason. From the fella who brought you the amazing and brutal Bone Tomahawk. I cannot wait to see this!

Dunkirk – Chris Nolan (Memento) takes his fine cinematic eye to the beaches of Dunkirk for this 3/4s amazing movie. Thousands of British soldiers are trapped on the beach as the Nazi’s approach to kill them all. It’s up to regular folk and their regular boats to rescue them. It’s a pretty riveting film for most of the running time but it falters, like most of Nolan’s films, (in my opinion) near the end. I won’t give away any spoilers except to say that the Allies won the war and the Nazi’s lost.

Jeepers Creepers 3 – Supposed horror movie about a scarecrow or something that eats people. Seems they’ll make a horror movie about anything these days. What’s next, a killer snowman? Oh wait, that’s been done. Maybe a bed that eats people? Seen it. Killer tires? Yep. Possessed hair extensions? Who knew? Zombie beavers? Sigh.

Leatherface – Be there when little Leatherface gets his fist chainsaw! Share the precious moments with him as he fashions his first mask made out of human skin. Awww. They grow up so fast! I guess when you’re born with the name “Leatherface” your lot in life is pretty much laid out for you. Directed, for some reason, by the folks that made the outstanding French horror film, Inside.

Lego Ninjago Movie – Fun Lego commercial, er, I mean movie! If you liked the others ones (I did) you’ll enjoy this one as well.

Mayhem – A virus infects a bunch of white collar workers in a working building (offices I think they’re called) causing them to act out on their worst impulses! A cautionary tale on the inherent dangers of the corporate world and it’s eats dog eat dog nature or a fun excuse to create some on-screen bloodletting and craziness? You decide. DECIDE! (Blu Ray is here, DVD should be arriving this week)

Black Dog Newsletter December 12-18 “It’s Almost Here Edition!”

Yes, that’s right it’s almost here! Our podcast! You thought I was talking about Christmas, didn’t you? We’ll that’s almost here as well. But more importantly, we here at Black Dog laboratories have been working hard on a fun movie podcast I’m sure (well, hope) that you’ll enjoy. We’ve experienced some technical difficulties but we should have 3 episodes ready for your ears by next Friday (the 22nd) including a special Christmas themed extravaganza.

New Releases

Game of Thrones Season 7 – The latest season of this fine show, now with more dragons! More snow zombies or whatever they’re supposed to be! More incest! More everything!

Killing Heydrich – Second film this year that details the assassination attempt of that ghoul, Heydrich, and the consequences that followed.

The Kingsmen: The Golden Circle – Tepid sequel to the fun original flick from 3 years ago finds the Kingsmen, whose headquarters have been destroyed, heading to America to hang out with Channing Potatoman, Elton John and some cowboys/spies.

Mother! – One of my most anticipated films of the year (can’t believe I still haven’t seen it!) finds Jennifer Lawrence (J-Law) and Javier Bardem (Jav-Bard) living a nice tranquil life but then some people show up and won’t leave or something like that. Think maybe Rosemary’s Baby or maybe Transformers 2 (probably not Transformers) or something along those lines.

Stronger – Jake Gyllenhall gets his legs blown off during the Boston Marathon (by a bomb). His story of recovery inspires a nation. Interesting fact – Gyllenhall actually had his legs removed for the film (that’s some method acting). They eventually grew back.

Victoria and Abdul – “Hmmm, who can we get to play an elderly Queen Victoria? What about Helen Mirren? Too busy. What about Meryl Streep? Too American. What about Shaq? Ummm…What about Dame Judi Dench? It’s been a few months since she’s played a queen, right? Sold!”

Coming Soon!

New Releases!

Aquarius – Fine Brazilian film stars the legendary Sonia Braga as a women who refused to leave her beloved apartment when the evil developers swoop in. Could be here. Could be anywhere.

Better Watch Out – Nice Christmas home invasion film finds a babysitter defending her charge against some nasty fellas. But not everything is at is it seems, probably. Love me some Christmas horror!

Detroit – Tough, harsh drama from Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty, Near Dark) chronicles a nasty brutal race riot in the lovely city of Detroit in 1967.

Fargo Season 3 – Very excited for the new season of one of the best shows on the TVs. It’s late arriving at Cambie – should be there in a day or two.

Home Again – Reese Witherspoon, single mom in LA, takes in three young men as borders with unexpected results! I guess it’s a comedy. Or a porno.

Homeland Season 6 – Season 6 of Homeland.

Howard Lovecraft and the Undersea Kingdom – Children’s film starring every kids favourite mischevious imp, HP Lovecraft, and his kooky cast of characters including Nyarlathotep and Cthulhu the Destroyer of Worlds.

Limehouse Golem – Spooky British flick about a series of unexplained murders. Since the townsfolk can’t figure it out, the next logical conclusion to be drawn is that it must be an ancient mythical beast – the Golem. Always my first choice when I can’t find my keys or one of my neighbours gets murdered.

Orphan Black Season 5 – Final season in this tight, crazy show about clones and the cloning around that they do.

Stranger Things Season 1 – Fine show about some kids in the 1980’s who set out to discover what happened to their missing friend. Monsters, alternate universes and Mathew Modine and his white white hair all add to the scares.

Twin Peaks Season 3 – Who’d have thunk it that after all these years David Lynch would return to make such an excellent conclusion to the amazing Twin Peaks? Not me. But now I do! On DVD, Blu Ray coming this week!

Coming Soon!

New Releases!

American Assassin – Guy’s lady-friend gets taken out by terrorists so he embarks on a journey of revenge. Tough-guy Michael Keaton is there to show him the tough-guy ropes.

Birth of the Dragon – Bruce Lee famously fights another guy in 1960’s San Francisco.

Brigsby Bear – Odd-sounding but very well received little comedy/drama about a kid imprisoned somewhere and the only thing he knows about the outside world is a from a show called Brigsby Bear that was created just for him. It ends and he tries to finish off the show. Or something like that.

Despicable Me 3 – Gru teams up with his charming and nicely-quaffed brother Dru for some sort of scheme. Hilarity, I presume, ensues.

Heyday of the Insensitive Bastards – Lots of actors tell 7 different tales of various stories with different subjects. Hello indie comedy/drama effort.

The Innocents – Tough, heartbreaking drama that finds a bunch of nuns pregnant after being attacked by Soviet “liberators” in 1945 Poland.

Of Horses and Men – Weird-looking Icelandic (go figure) comedy/drama about men and women and horses and love and vodka and tractors and well…watch and you decide!

Black Dog Newsletter Nov 21-27 “Hunky-Dory Edition!”

Everything is fine. Right? Good. Now look at all the great new films we have on the shelves for your viewing pleasure!

New Releases

Brand New Testament – So it seems that God is a grumpy old man living in Brussels with his very opinionated young daughter. Hi-jinks, I presume, ensue in this crowd-pleasing comedy.

Churchill – Another movie about Churchill (Winston) finds old Winnie the British Bulldog grappling with the enormity of Operation Overlord (invasion of France) in 1944.

The Fall Season 3 – The conclusion to the excellent, heavy, dramatic police drama that finds Scully on the trail of a nasty sexual predator played by 50 Shades of Grey.

Good Time – Well-received thriller finds the sparkly Twilight vampire Robert Pattison trying to keep his mental patient brother out of jail after a heist goes wrong.

Hitman’s Bodyguard – Sam Jackson and Deadpool are a hit-man and a body guard (not too sure which is which) in this screwball action comedy. You’re on your own with this one.

I Do…Until I Don’t – Fake documentary comedy written by, directed by and starring Lake Bell about marriage and, like, what’s up with that? The thesis is what if marriage were a 7-year contract with an option to renew? Hilarity, I presume, ensues.

Kedi – Lovely little documentary about cats that live on the streets of Istanbul and how they are mostly loved and well taken care of. Stars Bengu, Deniz and Duman.

Logan Lucky – Steven Soderburgh is back, baby! But did he ever really go away? Doesn’t matter, I’ve pretty much liked everything this guy has ever done. Here’s a comedy crime thriller about some dudes – Channing Tatum, Adam Driver and Daniel Craig – who decide to pull off a heist at at NASCAR racing place.

The Only Living Boy in New York – Dude has a thing for his Dad’s mistress. Should make for an interesting Thanksgiving dinner.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets – Luc Besson’s sci-fi extravaganza sure looks pretty. A dark force threatens the universe or something and, as usual, it’s up to a couple of teenagers to save everyone.

The Villainess – Cool-looking South Korean revenge thriller (no one does revenge quite like South Korea) about a female assassin who leaves a trail of bodies in her wake while trying to slake her thirst for revenge. I think there might be a little knife work in this one as the IMDB warnings include: stabbed in the head, stabbed in the chest, stabbed in the throat and stabbed in the foot, among other things. Yes please!

Black Dog Newsletter November 7-13 “Brass Monkey Edition!”

Yes, it’s cold out. How cold? Well, you know the old saying…

With this chilly weather I can only suggest some hunkering down with some quality entertainment. We’ve got ya covered.

New Releases!

Atomic Blonde – Charlize Theron stars and kicks much ass as the titular action hero in this action espionage thriller. Best name for a movie this year!

Cars 3 – They’re still making these Cars movies, eh? Guess so.

The Crown – Excellent TV series about the Queen (Liz 2) and her doings and goings-ons in the 20th century.

In This Corner of the World – Lovely, dramatic animation piece from Japan about a girl living in Hiroshima during WWII. Probably not the best place to be.

Inconvenient Sequel – Al Gore still has some wind-power left in his old chops and is here to scare you once again with how dire the world is and what we can do about it.

Ingrid Goes West – Aubrey Plaza is an unhinged internet stalker who moves to LA to insinuate herself into the life of her latest obsession, Liz Olsen, in this very good comedy for the internet age. Which is now.

Marjorie Prime – Cool-looking sci-fi number that has John Hamm (mmm hamm) as a guy who, through use of some new fangled technology, contacts his dead father-in-law in holographic image form. Kinda like Tupac. I think.

Preacher Season 2 – Season 2 of this fun, weird supernatural vampire extravaganza. Good times.

Westworld Season 1 – Cool, violent, sex-filled HBO series based on the fine 1970’s film of the same name. Folks pay for a vacation in the “old west” where all of their desires can be fulfilled. But something is amiss…

Your Name – Excellent Japanamation feature finds comedy and drama in a couple of strangers who seem to be linked in some bizarre fashion. Expect to see this on a few year-end best-of lists.

Kidnap – Trashy but fun, B-Movie stars Oscar-winner, Halle Berry, as a mom who’s son has been kidnapped and she will stop at nothing, NOTHING, to get him back.

Black Dog Video Newsletter Oct. 24 – 30 “Shocktoberfest Edition!”

Just wanted to give a nice shout-out to everyone who came by on Saturday to celebrate International Independent Video Store Day with us. We felt all warm and gooey inside, like a cinnamon bun, to see so much love and support from so many of you wonderful people. Makes us think that we’re doing an OK job! Kudos.

And of course it’s almost Halloween! Our favourite time of the year. There’s some Halloween shenanigans transpiring on Cambie Street this Saturday and on Commercial Drive on the 31st. We’ll be handing out candy to all the kids and there are other planned festivities to enjoy. More info can be found at the bottom of this missive.

New Releases!

Aferim! – Another gem from the new wave of Romanian cinema! This fine flick centres on a cop in early 19th century Romania who’s hired by a nobleman to track down an escaped Gypsy slave who had an affair with his wife. Something tells me it doesn’t end up well for the Gypsy slave. But maybe it does! I dunno! I haven’t seen it! Yet!

The B-Side – The great Errol Morris is back with this nice documentary about the life and times of photographer, Elsa Dorfman.

Chuck – Fine bio-pic that has Liev Schrieber playing heavyweight boxing fella, Chuck Wepner. Also stars Elizabeth Moss and Naomi Watts, so it has that going for it.

The Dark Tower – Muddled adaptation of Steve King’s Dark Tower series. Like, how do you distill a bunch of novels into one hour and a half movie? Even if you have the lovely and talented Idris Elba and Matt McConaughey in it?

Glory – Not to be undone by Romania’s fine cinematic output, neighbouring Bulgaria steps up to the plate and hits a home run with this tale of a railway worker who finds millions of dollars on the tracks and decides to hand it into the cops. That, it seems, was his first mistake.

Lady Macbeth – Sexy and violent tale of a woman forced into a grim marriage with a cold dead fish twice her age. She revolts by having a passionate affair with a younger dude. Things, it seems, don’t work out well for some. Heard great things about this little ditty.

The Leftovers Season 3 – The 3rd and last season of this excellent show. What happened to all those people that disappeared?

The Lure – Hasn’t the genre of “Polish flesh-eating mermaid musicals” been done to death already? Sheesh.

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me – Lovely Criterion re-release of this much maligned (it’s actually pretty cool) David Lynch prequel to the fine TV show known as Twin Peaks. Nice timing as the new TV series hits the home video in early December!

War for the Planet of the Apes – The last movie in the recent trilogy of talking ape movies. Find out how the world became over-run with smart, talking primates! Pretty good movie but my only complaint is that there’s too much apes talking about boring things and not enough Woody Harrelson as the bad guy. And I felt bad for those horses who had to carry around gorillas and orangutans on their backs. Poor horses. Still worth a gander.

The Wilde Wedding – Great cast – Glenn Close, Malkovich, Captain Picard, and Minne Driver attempt to breathe life into this tale of a retired film star about to get married for the fourth time. Why bother?

The Wizard of Lies – Bob DeNiro plays that scumbag sleaze-ball Bernie Madoff and the ponzi scheme he created that ripped off his clients to the tune of billions of dollars. Also stars Michelle Pfeiffer and has Barry Levinson behind the wheel.

In honour of this sweet scary month, may I present to you a hauntingly fine list of what we feel are the best horror movies ever made?
