Black Dog Video Newsletter November 29 – December 4th “Buy Buy! Sell Sell! Edition!”

Indeed we do!

As some of you may already know we buy DVDs! If you want to de-clutterify and help us out in the process, bring in your fancy collection of DVDs and we’ll give you either store credit – $1 per disk – or cold hot cash – .50 per unit. We’re pretty picky about what we take, please no 40 Year-old Virgins or Sex and the City 2, and they have to be in good shape. We’re also open to donations if you please. Very open. If you catch my drift.

We’re also hiring over at the Cambie location (with possible shifts at Commercial) so drop off a resume at Cambie and we’ll see what’s what.

New Releases!

mv5bmji4ndi5mdg2ov5bml5banbnxkftztgwnza5odq3ode-_v1_ux182_cr00182268_al_

Absolutely Fabulous Movie – Movie version of the hit TV show finds the boozy ladies hiding out in France after knocking Kate Moss into the River Thames for some reason. Heard this flick was middling at best. Maybe they should just leave well-enough alone? Just maybe.

mv5bmji5mji4ntezof5bml5banbnxkftztgwnjm2nzg3nze-_v1_ux182_cr00182268_al_

The BFG – New Senior Speilbergo flick finds a Big Fucking Giant (I think that’s what the title stands for) being shunned by other giants because he doesn’t eat children. Too boney is my guess.

mv5bzgi5ztu2m2ytzwy4mc00zdfhltliytitztk1njdln2nkmzg2xkeyxkfqcgdeqxvymjy5odi4ndk-_v1_ux182_cr00182268_al_

Don’t Breathe – Well-reviewed horror number from the guy that brought you that pretty darn good Evil Dead remake a few years ago about some fools who think it’s going to be easy to home invade that blind guy. Then things happen!

mv5bntmwodazmtq5nf5bml5banbnxkftztgwndgznjkwnde-_v1_ux182_cr00182268_al_

Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalam – Oscar nominated drama from Israel finds a woman trying to divorce her dick of a husband. He refuses. To make matters worse, divorce cannot be granted without the husband’s permission, for some reason.

mv5bmtg4nda1ota5nf5bml5banbnxkftztgwmdq2mdm5ode-_v1_ux182_cr00182268_al_

Hell of High Water – Excellent crime drama about a pair of brothers who go to lengthy extremes to prevent the bank from foreclosing on the family farm. I wonder if those extremes include clown college? Probably not by the way they carry those guns and heavy bags of something (dicks? Probably cash). Expect to see this on many best of the year lists.

mv5bmtc0ntaxmdk1of5bml5banbnxkftztgwmdu3nja0ote-_v1_ux182_cr00182268_al_

The Intervention – Four nice-looking couples go away for the weekend only to learn that it’s an intervention for one of the lucky pairs! Much drama, a little comedy and some high tensions, I presume, ensue. Make a good double bill with The Invitation.

mv5bmwm2ywq3njitn2m4yy00njlmlwi5ymmtyzeymjfjyzuxztlkxkeyxkfqcgdeqxvymjexmjk0odk-_v1_uy268_cr40182268_al_

The Living and the Dead – Cool-looking haunted farmhouse TV series from across the pond! A lovely young couple inherits a farm in the middle of nowhere that’s plagued by supernatural doings. Might want to read the small print on your inheritances.

mv5bmjywodexnzuwmv5bml5banbnxkftztgwntgwnjuyote-_v1_ux182_cr00182268_al_

The Mechanic: Resurrection – Jason Statham either plays a car mechanic dealing with car problems or a suave assassin for hire that’s pulled back in for “one last job”. Not too sure as I haven’t seen it.

mv5bmji4mdm4mtu0ml5bml5banbnxkftztgwmtg4nzgwmdi-_v1_uy268_cr10182268_al_

Ordinary World – Judging by the cover art this flick looks to be about the singer guy from Green Day who goes around bludgeoning babies with his guitar. I’m hoping that is what it’s about but I fear it may be a drama/comedy about a former punk rock guy (who doesn’t club any babies) going through a mid-life crisis.

mv5bmja4ndyxnzyzof5bml5banbnxkftztgwnzu1nzcwode-_v1_ux182_cr00182268_al_

Pete’s Dragon – Live action remake (hello Jungle Book!) about a guy named Pete (played by some kid with the unfortunate name of Oakes Fegely) who’s best friend is a dragon. Probably not the flesh-eating, town- scorching type of dragon ala Game of Thrones. Just a guess.

And you wanted to take it down in April!

I like Christmas as much as the next fella but what can’t fathom is all the Christmas hoo-haw that starts so early! There’s no need to see anything Christmas related right after Labour Day or Halloween. In my opinion, it’s not acceptable until December. That said, there’s some sort of Christmas hullabaloo on the Drive this Saturday the 26th! (Poster at the bottom of the newsletter)

Also, we’ve teamed up with our good friends at Bomber Brewing to put on a Monday Movie night! Starting on December 12th, shimmy on down to the brewery and enjoy a fabulous beverage while taking in some fine holiday flicks. Cool beans.

New Releases!

mv5bnzg1ntq0mjywnl5bml5banbnxkftztgwmjk1njywote-_v1_ux182_cr00182268_al_

Lo and Behold: Reveries of the Connected World – Latest doc from the always amazing Werner Herzog focuses on the origins of living in the virtual world, up to the present and maybe even into the future! Because if anyone can see through time, it’s Werner Herzog!

mv5bmjqzmtk5otg2nl5bml5banbnxkftztgwotiznzi5ode-_v1_ux182_cr00182268_al_

Microbe and Gasoline – Latest flick from Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) looks like a nice little film about a couple of outcast kids who decide to build a car and travel around France for the summer. Oh, to be young and able to build a car again…

mv5bnde1mjy0mde0nv5bml5banbnxkftztgwnta0njy2ode-_v1_uy268_cr20182268_al_

The Search for Weng Weng – Nutty doc that travels to the Philippines in search of famed tiny guy exploitation actor (he’s only 2 foot 9!), Weng Weng, and find out his story on how he became a “big” star. Sorry. If you like movies about movies, put this on your list.

mv5bnzyyodqyodayov5bml5banbnxkftztgwmzc4mzczote-_v1_ux182_cr00182268_al_

Under the Sun – Odd doc about a Russian filmmaker who was granted access into North Korea to make a movie about a little girl and her family and how “wonderful” their lives are. But he managed to keep the cameras rolling and catches scene set-ups and the behind-the-scenes handlers and such. It’s beautifully filmed and both fascinating and, at times, boring. But it’s a cool peek into one of the most insane countries on this, or any other, planet.

mv5bmjeynzq0nzm4mv5bml5banbnxkftztgwmdi0odm2ote-_v1_ux182_cr00182268_al_

War Dogs – Comedy/drama/action thingy starring Jonah Hill and our favourite talking potato, Mikes Teller, about some bumbling guys who, for some reason, land a $300 million contract to sell arms to some folks in Afghanistan. Based on the truth or so they say.

mv5bmtg5nzu5odqxov5bml5banbnxkftztcwmdgxoti0mq-_v1_uy268_cr30182268_al_

What? – Old, crazy, almost forgotten Roman Polanski sex comedy (shudder) from 1972 making it’s debut on the DVD. Word has it this film became available because someone stole it out of the wine cellar of producer Carlo Pontil. Stars Marcello Mastroianni for some reason.

Black Dog Newsletter November 15 – 21 “Where is My Mind Edition!”

Some thoughts and musings that have been polluting my mind as of late…

– Like most humans on the earth, I’m still finding it hard to have the words Donald Trump and President in my mouth at the same time. It tastes terrible, like biting into a shit sandwich. This GIF of Jaws with googly eyes is to help you still enjoy life.
– Is it unseasonably warm for November or is it me? Am I unseasonably warm?
– Has there always been a Super Moon? I don’t recall any super moons when I was a kid. Or adult for that matter.

Anyhoo enough about me, onto the movies!

Army of One – Hey everyone, it’s a new Nic Cage movie! Our man Cage plays a crazy guy (go figure) who sets out on his own to find Osama Bin Laden (before he was killed). Supposedly based on a true story. Stars Russell Brand as God, so it has that going for it.

mv5bmtcznte3odc0nf5bml5banbnxkftztgwodu1mdqynze-_v1_ux182_cr00182268_al_

Band of Robbers – Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn set out to find an elusive treasure during modern times in this adventure comedy.

mv5bnjk5mjywnjg4nv5bml5banbnxkftztgwnzazmzc5nze-_v1_ux182_cr00182268_al_

Better Call Saul Season 2 – More hijinks ensue as Jimmy McGill, aka Saul Goodman, bumbles his way through one madcap adventure to the next. Good show although I had a bit of a hard time getting into this character as the lead but I’ve warmed up to him.

mv5bnzg4mjm2ndq4mv5bml5banbnxkftztgwmzk3mtgyode-_v1_sx214_al_

Finding Dory – Now it’s that idiot, Dory, getting lost and other fish have to find her or something like that. Highest grossing film of 2016. Ai Carumba!

Game of Thrones Season 6 – Seems that HBO finally learned to get out the current season of this amazing show in a timely fashion. Tis a fine season full of beheadings, rampant nudity and drunken loutishness. Sounds like a weekend at my place.

mv5bmjqxnze4odu1nl5bml5banbnxkftztgwmda4njk0ode-_v1_ux182_cr00182268_al_

Hands of Stone – Good-looking boxing bio-pic of Roberto Duran and his crusty trainer, Roberto De Niro.

mv5bmja2mzg2ndmznl5bml5banbnxkftztgwmjcwoduzote-_v1_sx214_al_

Kubo and the Two Strings – Very nice animated flick about a little dude (Kubo) who has to locate missing artifacts, including a set of sweet body armour, so he can defeat some evil spirits. Worth you time and fine for the kids.

mv5bmzezmjkwmjc3nv5bml5banbnxkftztgwmzc0njy5ode-_v1_ux182_cr00182268_al_

Nine Lives – Kevin Spacey hides his Oscar in the closet so he can play a talking cat.

In Flanders Field-adill-ids.

The grey skies of November come calling. Rain. Darkness arrives in the early eve. Remember that this Friday is Remembrance Day. It’s not just a day off but a day to think about how far we’ve come and at what cost and how far we still have to go. Heavy.

So today’s the big day! Click here to read my thoughts on what’s transpiring down below the border belt today!

Now on to the movies…

New Releases

mv5bmjiwnze5mtgwnl5bml5banbnxkftztgwnjm4ota0ote-_v1_ux182_cr00182268_al_

Bad Moms – Some good-looking moms are fed up with being the under-appreciated moms their loutish husbands and devil-children treat them as so they go out on the town for some adult-themed mom adventures! Are booze, drugs and maybe some male-strippers involved? Who knows?!

mv5bmty4odk3otm4nl5bml5banbnxkftztgwmjmwnzg1nze-_v1_uy268_cr80182268_al_

Billions Season 1 – Paul Giamatti is a tough-guy US Attorney who sets his sights on slippery, red-headed hedge fund king, Damian Lewis, in this fine television program.

mv5bmtk5mzy4mdkwov5bml5banbnxkftztgwmzy4mzczote-_v1_ux182_cr00182268_al_

Imperium – Harry Potter shaves off his magical locks and goes undercover as a white supremacist in this comedy, er, I mean heavy serious drama.

mv5bmjiyndg4otywof5bml5banbnxkftztgwotq3odgwote-_v1_ux182_cr00182268_al_

Indignation – Well-received adaptation of a Philip Roth novel finds a nice Jewish boy grappling and wrestling with anti-Semitism and sexual repression in 1951 at a stuffy college somewhere in Ohio. Sounds like a dramatic re-telling of that classic, Porky’s.

mv5bmtu0nzi0mzuymv5bml5banbnxkftztgwmzc4mzkwote-_v1_uy268_cr00182268_al_

Phantom Boy – Animated kids fare from France about a boy that has super powers for some reason who helps out a wheel-chair bound cop take down the mob. Something for everybody it seems.

mv5bmjkxotk1mzy4mf5bml5banbnxkftztgwodqzotu5ode-_v1_ux182_cr00182268_al_

Sausage Party – A hotdog goes searching for the true nature of it’s existence in this documentary, er, I mean animated comedy that’s definitely not for the kiddies. Unless your kid is, like 18 or The Omen something. Features the words and stylings of Seth Rogan and all his friends.

mv5bmtc2nzgxmjy2nv5bml5banbnxkftztgwmzcxmjc0ote-_v1_ux182_cr00182268_al_

Skiptrace – In a casting mash-up that nobody ever asked for or even dreamed of, comes a movie starring Jackie Chan and Mr Jackass, Johnny Knoxville (along with Bingbing Fan, of course), about a Chinese detective and an American crime….ah who cares. Directed by Renny Harlin (Cutthroat Island, Mindhunters) if you needed to know more..

mv5bmtu3mza4ntuymv5bml5banbnxkftztgwnjy0otaznze-_v1_ux182_cr00182268_al_

Uncle Nick – Holiday (Christmas) comedy about a lewd guy – think Louis CK but less funny and with a beard – who attends his brothers Christmas festivities. As the description on the IMDB puts it, “Presented by Errol Morris, Uncle Nick is a comedy of inappropriate behaviour, uncomfortably interrupted trysts, and a monumental over-serving of ten-cent beers.” Okay. I find it hard to believe that Errol Morris would have anything to do with this. I doubt he’d even watch it but what do I know?

Rise of the Sith

So today’s the big day! Amurica gets to choose wether or not they want to devolve into fascism and insanity at the hands of a giant orange groundhog or keep treading along (sinking perhaps?) in corporate control. The irony isn’t lost on me, or I hope most folks, that Remembrance Day is also celebrated, or observed if you will, at the end of the week. So many have sacrificed so much so a country like the U.S. can decide if they want a Dark Lord of Sith proportions in Trump running the show. Even if he doesn’t win I think that there’s been irreparable damage done to the States. He’s given a voice to all the bigoted, racist, small-minded cretins who now feel it’s OK to say and do vile things publicly. Who knows what that might lead to? It’s quite crazy if you really think about it. The landscape of the world might be very different come tomorrow. But I do believe that it will be a landslide in Clinton’s favour and, while I’m all stoked to see a woman elected as President, she is so deep in bed with the banks and big business that nothing will change. It’ll probably just get worse. The gap between the haves and the have-nots will continue to widen and liberties will continue to erode but maybe, just maybe, people might finally reach a tipping point and there might be some sort of revolution lurking on the horizon. Probably not as there seems to be way too many distractions in the form of intranets, TV, movies (sorry!), sports, celebrity nonsense and a myriad of other things that folks seem to find more important. Dare to dream.

And I do have to admit that there’s a small part of me – a dark festering black hole of cynicism lurking in the back of my reptile brain – that is interested in seeing how things would be if Trump were to actually win. It’s the same part of me that clicks on a headline that promises “Watch this man swims with sharks! You won’t believe what happens next!” or “Train derails and crashes into circus tent! Thousands killed! Animals go on rampage!” I’m a sad sad man.

It should make for an interesting night. I, for one, will be watching this shit-show. Might need something uplifting to throw into the DVD player afterwards though. Maybe some Black Mirror or Starship Troopers or Triumph of the Will.  Good luck to us all.
