Black Dog Video Newsletter September 20-26th “Rainy Day Sales Edition #12 & 35!”

Oh my God, It’s full of movies!”

It was nice to see so many folks brave the rain and sleet and locusts early Saturday morning and make it out to our Dawn of The Crazy DVD Sale event over on Cambie Street. I trust that many found some lovely gems in movie form to take home and cherish. We still have quite a few left and will be selling them off over the coming months at the stores. But that’s not all! This Sunday at the Wise Hall Flea we may have a table with hundreds of amazing DVDs for sale for only $5 a pop! Details about if we can pull it off or not at the time of this pressing are not available. Check the website or facebook for updates.

Also there won’t be a newsletter next week as I am out of town. I’m taking my son to LA for a Minecraft convention! Should be weird and tiring. The words and pictures will resume the following week.

New Releases

Free State of Jones – Good ole boy Matt McConaughey is a Confederate soldier who changes his mind about the war and goes to Mississippi and starts a revolt against a nasty local bad guy. Based on real events!

Hockney – Nice and lovely and nice doc about famed painter David Hockney. Based on real events! Check it out if you’re into art and stuff.

The Measure of a Man – Excellent French film about a nice older French gentleman who finds himself unemployed in France. Sounds terrifying.

Neighbors 2 – Seth Rogan and Rose Byrne have their hands full when a noisy sorority moves in next door. Man, these two have the worst luck. What’s next for them, a bunch of Nazi skinheads? Mormons? Trump Supporters? I’m not too proud to admit that I quite liked the first one so I may have to check this out. Yes, I’m a sad man.

Neon Bull – Odd sounding flick from Brazil (which I am assured is quite excellent – the film – not Brazil, although I hear Brazil is also very excellent) about a rodeo guy who’s job it is to bring down bulls by the tail for some reason. But what he really wants to do is become a glitzy fashion designer. And so the tale begins…

Raiders! The Story of the Greatest Fan Film Ever Made! – Doc about these nerdy guys who made a shot-by-shot remake of Raiders of the Lost Ark back in the 80’s. The only shot they didn’t get was the famed airplane fight scene. Years later they reunite to try to pull it off. Interesting side note – I saw their original flick a number of years ago at the Park Theatre and had beers with these guys afterwards. Interesting nerds they were (and probably still are).

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Closet – They still make these movies?

What Happened Miss Simone? – Excellent doc about the late great Nina Simone. Quite a life she lived, I have to say. Pretty amazing. Great footage of her in concert and out of concert as well.

Black Dog Video Newsletter September 13 – 19 “Once More with Feeling Edition!”

Ahhhh, DVDs!

This Saturday at the famed Cambie store (please don’t anyone go to the Commercial location although I expect that at least one person will show up there) at 9am till 11am, comes our sequel to Night of the Crazy DVD Sale that we held a few weeks back. There will be tons of very nice DVDs up for sale with prices ranging from $2 on up to $1 billion! If you’re a collector or just love movies drop on by as there will be many rare, out-of-print, box sets, war, documentaries, sci-fi, horror plus a whole lot more that will be up for grabs. You pay in cash and we’ll cover the tax! Doors open at 9am!

New Releases!

Captain America: Civil War – Pretty good, if overly long (why are all these damn movies like 11 hours long?!), Marvel action dealy that finds Captain America and a bunch of his buddies squaring off against the Iron Mans and a bunch of his pals for some reason. Ant-Man and Spider-Man highlight a fun brawl at the (suspiciously security-free) airport.

The Conjuring 2 – Some more scares get conjured up (ahem) in this sequel to a film called The Conjuring. This time it takes place in scary old England!

King Jack – Jack has problems with a shitty bully. Then his aunt falls ill and he has to look after his pipsqueak cousin. Makes for a tough summer in this well-received coming-of-age drama.

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping– Funny guy Andrew Samberg entertains in this laugh-getter about a former boy-band boy who’s having a tough time staying relevant in today’s pop music landscape. Expect to be laughing while watching this.

Black Dog Video Newsletter September 6-12 “End of Summer Edition”

It’s dark and cool out, the kids are back in school (yay!), leaves are falling on the ground and some fine Porters and Stouts are making their way into my fridge. It must mean that summer is over and sweet autumn is upon us. Yes, I know that summer is officially here for a few more weeks, but symbolically it seems over. It was good while it lasted but let’s welcome the most wonderful time of the year.

Oh, and don’t forget our big DVD sale coming your way on the 17th of September! Info, courtesy of the lovely and talented RJ at Cambie St, can be found at the bottom of the newsletter.

New Releases!

All the WayBreaking Bad plays LBJ as he takes over the presidency from freshly assassinated JFK and attempts to get the CRA (Civil Rights Act ) passed in this fine docudrama.

The Darkness – Yummy Kevin Bacon takes his family to the Grand Canyon for some fine adventures. Unfortunately he returns home with a malevolent spirit bent on their destruction. Sounds a bit like that “Taboo” episode of The Brady Bunch, but with Bacon.

Churchill’s Secret – The great Michael Gambon is Winston Churchill who keeps the fact he had a stroke in 1953 a secret form the world (I was hoping the secret was that he was an alien or something!). Damn, I guess I should have said spoiler alert!

Equals – In a dystopian future where there are no emotions to be had, an attractive young couple fall in love. Is their love frowned upon or even persecuted? Who knows?! Not me!

Love and Friendship – Very good and very funny take on the Jane Austen classic finds Kate Beckinsdale and Chloe Sevigny cavorting around a country estate in 1790’s England playing matchmaker and stuff.

The Meddler – Widower Susan Sarandon moves to LA to be near her daughter, Rose Byrne, and to “meddle” in her life. Comedy hijinks and dramatic life lessons, I presume, ensue.

Money Monster – Jodie Foster directs the Clooney and Julia Roberts in this hostage type drama that finds George being held hostage in his TV studio by a guy who lost everything to the Wall St criminals. Bastardos!

Nina – Nice bio-pic of Nina Simone, as played by Zoe Saldana. Keep an eye out for the fabulous doc, What Happened, Miss Simone, hitting the shelves very soon!

The People vs O.J. Simpson – If you haven’t had enough OJ following the excellent ESPN doc, check out this well-received TV mini-series. I was hoping that this would be campy and fun but it looks pretty darn serious.

Shetland – Over across the pond, a Shetland pony solves crimes in the small town…what was that? It’s not about a pony? It takes place in the small island town of Shetland? And it’s a human who solves crimes? Well, I’ll be hornswoggled!
