“We’re all gonna die!”

Nice spot of rain we had on Saturday. I thought that it would drive more folks into the old video store but maybe it was raining too hard to leave the house. Even after all these years I still can’t determine if weather has any effect on business. Are you fine folks more likely to watch something on a rainy night or does it matter? For me, I could watch a flick on a sunny afternoon, being pelted with hail or attacked by locusts. Doesn’t matter.

Glassland – Tough little indie effort finds a taxi driving dude in Dublin getting himself mixed up in human trafficking while trying to help his drug-addled mom (Tony Collette). Looks tough and bleak and gritty. Great for a rainy Saturday night on the couch at home.

Gods of Egypt – Big-budget fantasy gods and hereos epic starring Jamie Lannister (Game of Thrones) and Gerald Butler (who only seems to do bad action films anymore). Might be what the doctor ordered to chase away a hangover on a Friday evening or Sunday afternoon.

The Hallow – Cool-looking horror number finds a family moving into a creepy house somewhere in Ireland and end up battling some sort of terrifying supernatural entities that reside in the surrounding woods. My kind of flick for a dark and stormy evening.

The Heavy Water War – Excellent Norwegian mini-series about Hitler’s attempt to make some atomic bombs (that would have been bad news) and the brave Norwegian saboteurs who thwarted the dastardly Nazis efforts. Sounds great for a binge watch on a quiet Monday evening.

Jane Got a Gun – Great cast (Natalie Portman, Ewan McGregor, others) star in this troubled western about a woman who asks her ex-lover to help save her outlaw husband (awk-ward!) from a band of no-good-nicks . And by troubled I mean the original director quit (Lynne Ramsey which would have been great!) and stars Jude Law and Michael Fassbender both dropped out at the last minute. I heard also (or maybe I didn’t) that the set was haunted and several crew members disappeared. Might be worth a look to see what kind of a train-wreck it turned out to be after brunch on a Sunday afternoon?

The Last Kingdom – Intrigue, exciting politics, long hair and lots of mud are the order of the days as England tries to sort itself out in the year 872 in this good-looking TV series. If you like Vikings, this might be right up your alley. Be a fine watch spread out over a few week nights with a bottle (or two) of some cheap wine.

Pandemic – Post-apocalyptic sci-fi number finds a nasty disease infecting most of Earth’s population. The race is on to find a cure before it’s too late! Pop open a couple of Lagers or IPA’s and sit back on a Saturday night after a fine day of hiking or volleyball or chicken sexing and enjoy!

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies – So this is a thing, eh? Jane Austin meets George Romero? Sigh. What’s next, MacBeth and Werewolves? Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and Yetis? Well I’m sure that some of you fine folks will enjoy this little bout of silliness after a hard days work. Turn off the brain, order in some Chinese (food) and slap it in the old DVD player and chill.

Here at Black Dog Laboratories we’ve been working on a few things to help supplement the video rental income in these tough economic times. Our latest endeavour? Socks! For your feet! We’ve brought in (sorry, we didn’t make these ones) some cool Studio Ghibli ladies foot coverings. At the time of this writing we had a couple of pairs left but they were going fast. Black Mountain Side – Sounds like a Led Zeppelin song. But it’s not! It’s a spooky Canadian number about some archeologists who discover some sort of monolith dating back over 10,000 years out in the woods. Then things start to go wrong. So wrong.

Call the Midwife Season 5 – Those plucky midwives go about their midwifery in Season 5 of this fine British shoe.

The Finest Hours – Big water adventure finds Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) leading some Coast Guardians out into treacherous waters back in 1952 to rescue some sailors whose oil tankers sank. A bit of bad news, since this is a Disney flick they thought it would be OK to only allot 25% of what video stores ordered because, well, they’re jerks, so we didn’t get any DVDs (only Blu Ray). I’m trying to track down a couple to get for you fine folks as soon as possible.

How to Be Single – Nice little comedy, ala Sex in the City, about 4 gals and some guys traversing the ups and downs and ins and outs (double entendre anyone?) of being single in New York City. I remember those carefree single days with not a care in the world. Sigh…

Race – Good time action adventure finds Jesse Owens battling Nazis in space in…um sorry, actually I think this is more of a heavy drama that finds Jesse Owens (get the double meaning of the title? I knew you would) competing in the 1936 German Olympics in front of Hitler and his buddies. But if I were to make this movie….

Risen – Joseph Fiennes (he’s no Ralph Fiennes but he’s still a fine Fiennes) play a guy tasked with finding the missing body of some guy rumoured to have risen from the dead back in 33 AD. I wonder who it was, Jimmy Hoffa? Either that or it’s a movie about making bread. You figure it out.

Theeb – Excellent intense adventure from the Middle East finds a young boy going on a perilous journey to take a British officer somewhere in the desert. Nominated for foreign film Oscar.

The We and the I – Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) directs this fun energetic flick about a bunch of spunky teens riding the bus on their last day of school. I imagine that it’s more fun than riding the #20 on any day.

Zoolander 2 – Another kick at the fashion can from the fellas that brought you Zoolander 1! This time around Derek and Hansel become embroiled in some espionage…ah, who cares what the plot is for these stupid movies. You know what you’re getting when you pop it in your player.

It’s a book!

Those of you long timers at the Cambie shop might remember our former Black Dogger, Kier-la. She ran the super-cool Cinemeurte film festival years ago. Well she moved on to bigger and brighter things since leaving the nest. A couple of years ago she wrote a fine book called House of Psychotic Women. It’s a good read, check it out. Well now it’s being turned into a TV series! How cool is that? Check it out here.

10,000 Saints – Holy moly, that’s a lot of saints. Where did they get all those saints? Nice looking indie drama with indie mainstay Ethan Hawke as one of a few screwed up individuals living in New York’s East Village in the 1980’s. Expect a cool soundtrack as well but don’t blame us if there’s, like, only 8,500 or so saints.

Afterlife Season 1 and 2 – Cool, spooky TV series finds Rick from The Walking Dead as a university prof who gets himself entangled in some supernatural shenanigans after teaming up with a medium (not a small or a large but a medium). Count me tickled to check this out!

Attenberg – Weird and crazy (same thing really) coming of age Greek film about a 23 year-old girl growing up in a dull town. She spends her time watching David Attenberg docs (hence the title) and hanging out with her only friend, Bella. Then a visiting engineer comes to to town (played by the director of Dogtooth and The Lobster).

Dirty Grandpa – Sigh. Can we just have DeNiro stop making movies for a while. Is his agent insane? Is he? Why would he subject himself to a Dirty Grandpa? (The Canadian DVD cover has old man DeNiro standing there with his pants around his ankles – check your dignity at the door). It would have to be very crass and gross, along the lines of a Bad Santa, to make this crap worthwhile. I’m guessing that it’s not (I haven’t seen it). The plot? DeNiro and his grandson, Zac Efron, go to Florida march break for some Dirty Grandpa hijinks. Sigh.

Eisenstein in Guanajuato – New Peter Greenaway film (Cook the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover) about famed the Russian filmmaker (Battleship Potemkin) getting away from it all in Mexico where he ends up making a film about sex and death. I’m sure that it’s ravishingly beautiful and full of long words and weirdness as many a Greenaway films are.

Southbound – Horror thriller type of affair concerning 5 interlocking tales of terror that envelope some travellers on a desolate stretch of deserted highway. Never leave home.

The VVitch – Most excellent scary horror chiller set in the olden days (so olden in fact they didn’t have any Ws to spell words with so they had to use two Vs) about a family living in the middle of nowhere who are beset upon by the forces of evil. Put this one in your DVD player and watch it!

Creative Control – Cool-looking mind-bending sci-fi drama (shot in lovely black and white) about a guy in the near-future of Brooklyn (wonder if it’s still littered with hipsters and their beards?) who uses a new type of technology – something called Augmented Reality – to carry on an affair with his friend’s girlfriend. Sort of. That’s all the description there is so there ya go.

Deadpool – Despite starring Ryan Reynolds, this flick is a blast! A dying guy undergoes some shady treatment at the hands of a mean unfeeling psycho only to be transformed into Deadpool who can’t be killed or maimed (he’ll even grow things back!). He then proceeds to track down and eliminate the guy who made him a monster. Lots of winking at the camera, and the superhero genre in general – maybe a little too much for me – and tons of great violence and sexy bits make this one of the best of the Marvel films (even if there’s some shoddy CGI). And not for the kiddies which is a nice change of pace.

The Fall S2 – Scully is back in this intense, gripping detective show hunting down some bad men. If you loved Season 1, and I know that you did, you’ll fall for season 2. Get it? Fall for? Heh-heh.

Mustang – Oscar-nominated Turkish film about 5 sisters who are imprisoned in their own home for fear of them being promiscuous and such with the neighbouring boys. Sounds like a Turkish Virgin Suicides. Turvirgin Suicides? Heard it’s a pretty great film.

Orange is the New Black S3 – Oh those inmate scamps are back for more hijinks and showers and comedy and drama.

The Program – Drama about an Irish journalist who suspects that douchy American bike rider, Lance Armstrong, is using banned substances to win all those Tour de Franceses. It seems he was right. From great director Stephen Frears (High Fidelity, The Grifters, The Hit) so it has that going for it.

Synchronicity – Cool-looking mind-bending sci-fi thriller about a guy who builds a time machine (I’m still working on mine out back in the garage) to go back in time to reveal the truth about his creation and the woman who’s trying to steal it. If I could go back in time I’d go back to my university years and accept that dinner invitation from Lisa S.. Or kill Hitler. Not too sure.

War & Peace – Pretty good (from what I hear) adaptation of the famous Russian novel by Tolstoy about the Russian revolution and the Russian lives it affected.

Where to Invade Next – Michael Moore’s latest doc finds him “invading” various countries to see what they have to offer the US for their next invasion. I hear it’s pretty darn funny.

Hot enough for ya?

Is anyone else alarmed at how hot it was on Monday? They say it was up to 30 degrees somewhere inland (what is inland anyways? Are we inland?). I mean it was beautiful and all but it shouldn’t be this hot this early (or ever, really) in the year, right? What is it going to be like 10 years from now? Are we facing some sort of apocalypse or end of days? What will the future be like? Will it be some sort of Mad Max scenario? Blade Runner? The Road? Idiocracy (some might argue that we’re already there)? Day After Tomorrow or some other fantastic movie-themed climate catastrophe? Buckle up folks, it’s going to be a bumpy ride.

Guns for Hire – Fun-looking crime thriller finds a hit woman/tow truck driver helping out a suicidal woman on the run from some bad men. Or something like that. Pretty cool looking cast – Ben Mendelshon, Jeffery Dean Morgan (no relation to Harry Dean Stanton) – helps along the action.

Home Fires – Nice-looking BBC drama finds a bunch of “inspirational” women helping out the cause in the town of Cheshire during World War II. I keep wanting to call this show Home Fries for some reason.

Joy – Drama about a woman who invents a mop. From the team of director David O. Russell and stars Jennifer Lawrence (love the J-Law!), DeNiro and Bradley Cooper (think anyone just calls him Brad?). Looking forward to more films about tools and appliances. I hear there’s a film in the works about the origins of the George Forman Grill! Hope it’s in 3-D.

The Legacy – From the nice people who brought you Borgen and The Killing comes this fine drama from Denmark about the death of a family matriarch and the ensuing battles for her estate by her four children. I imagine that it’s a lot better than I just made it sound.
