School of Rawk!

Local musician and friend of Black Dog, Rodney DeCroo, is putting together a neat little project in conjunction with Templeton High School’s film department and we’re here to tell you about it! Click on this here link for more information.

Keep an eye out in the future for something interesting coming to Black Dog. (Hint, it may involve some type or a few different types of clothing!)

New Releases!

Absolutely Anything – On paper this sounds like a winner – Simon Pegg is a guy who’s body is taken over by aliens and is given free reign to do as he pleases. It’s written and directed by one of the Python’s, Terry Jones, and has cameos by more Python’s, Eddie Izzard, Robin Williams and Joanna Lumley. On screen…well theres’ a dog that wears glasses.

MV5BMjA2OTg4NjQ4Ml5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwMzE3Mjk5NDE@._V1_UY268_CR4,0,182,268_AL_

Arthur & George – Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, in a recent funk over the death of his first wife (there’s two kinds of funk and this isn’t the one you want to get down with), pursues a case involving obscene letters and dead livestock. Oh BBC, you wily little scamp, you.

MV5BMTY2OTE4NTUzMl5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNDY3NzA1NzE@._V1_UX182_CR0,0,182,268_AL_

The Club – aka El Club – Chilean flick from the director of such fine films as No, Tony Manero and Post Mortem, finds a crisis counselor who travels to a small Chilean beach town where disgraced priests and nuns (their crimes ranging from child abuse, of course, to baby snatching) are sent to live weird secluded lives. Heard great things about this flick. Make a nice fun evening doubled up with Spotlight.

MV5BMTUwNTMxNjkzMl5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwMzQyMzA5NzE@._V1_UY268_CR3,0,182,268_AL_

Driftless Area – Good cast (Anton Yelchin, Zooey Deschanel, John Hawkes) help to elevate this standard crime thriller. Guy returns home only to find himself embroiled in some shady doin’s involving a violent criminal, a mysterious woman and a duffle bag full of money. Always with the duffle bag full of money. Did that end well for anyone who’s ever come across a duffle bag full of money?

MV5BMjk0MjMzMTI3NV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwODEyODkxNzE@._V1_UX182_CR0,0,182,268_AL_

Krampus – Fun Christmas horror (just in time for spring/summer!) about a kid who has a crappy Christmas so he does what every kid dreams of doing after having a lousy Christmas – he summons a Christmas demon who’s going to poop in your stocking and probably much worse! From the director of one of my favourite Halloween films, Trick ‘r Treat.

MV5BMTc0NjYxNDkzNF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNTM2NjQyNTE@._V1_UY268_CR43,0,182,268_AL_

Poldark – Ross Poldark returns home to England from the American Revolutionary War only to find even more challenges waiting for him – wife married someone else, dad’s dead, Christmas demon pooping in his stockings and his house and estate have fallen into disrepair. More quality stuff from across the pond.

MV5BMTU4ODAzMzcxOV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwODkxMDI1NjE@._V1_UX182_CR0,0,182,268_AL_

Ride Along 2 – Because the world need more of this. Ice Cube (not his real name) is back as a cop (hah!) looking to take down some drug bad-guys with the help of his loud-mouthed friend Kevin Hart. Comedy and gun-play, I presume, ensues.

MV5BMTUxNjk0NTczMV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNzIzMTEzNzE@._V1_UY268_CR0,0,182,268_AL_

Son of Saul – Sad and intense Holocaust drama finds a guy helping out a younger fella in the horrors of Auschwitz in 1944. Great movie. Won the Oscar for best foreign film.

The fleas are among us!

I hope that everyone is enjoying the crazy warm weather. It’s almost too hot, right? Anyhoo, just wanted to send you a reminder that we’ll be at the Wise Hall Flea Market this coming Sunday, April 24th. We’ll have piles and scads and mountains of DVDs and Blu Rays for sale. There will be a few T-shirts and even some much sought after Black Dog underwear (what we have left) for your flea market pleasure. Tell your friends, tell your enemies, bring everyone you can think of and even some that you can’t. Hope to see you there!

New Releases!

And Then There Were None – Fine-looking British TV drama about some folks invited to a strange island where they are killed off one-by-one. Sounds like the worst vacation ever.

images

Dominion Creek – Another TV series! So many shows. Stop making so many good shows! This one centres on some brothers hoping to strike it rich during the gold rush era. There’s gold in them darn hills, I tells ya! I could write this stuff!

MV5BMTQ5MjI1OTA2NV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNjMxMjE3NjE@._V1_UX182_CR0,0,182,268_AL_

Drunk Stoned Brilliant Dead: The Story of National Lampoon – Doc about, well you can probably guess by the title.

MV5BMTQ3MTg3MzY4OV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNTI4MzM1NzE@._V1_UX182_CR0,0,182,268_AL_

Fifty Shades of Black – The Wayans take a poke (maybe a little slap and tickle as well) at 50 Shades of Grey. Hilarity, I presume, ensues.

imgres

Hot Bot – A modern day Weird Science as a couple of horny nerds discover (or build, not too sure) a sexy robot. Aren’t sexy robots, like, everywhere now? Made by the Polish brothers who made the intriguing Northfork and Twin Falls Idaho. So there’s that.

MV5BMTkxNzc0MjgwN15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwMzY3Nzk1NzE@._V1_UX182_CR0,0,182,268_AL_

Ip Man 3 – Donnie Yen returns as the amazing Ip Man! This time he’s taking on some bad-ass property developers who plan on taking over the city. Sounds like Vancouver could use an Ip Man!

MV5BOTY0MjM3NTQyOF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwMzcwNjUxNzE@._V1_UX182_CR0,0,182,268_AL_

Lady in the Van – Maggie Smith lives in a decrepit old van that she parks in a guys driveway and refuses to leave. For 15 years. That sounds terrifying but I imagine that they become friends and life lessons are learned. Either that or she kills him and keeps his corpse in the van where she proceeds to slowly devour him.

MV5BMTQ5NzcwNTM3OV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwMDM3NTA1NzE@._V1_UX182_CR0,0,182,268_AL_

Misconduct – Where did this one come from? I never even heard of it. Courtroom thriller that stars Al Pacino and Anthony Hopkins about a guy taking on a big evil pharmaceutical company. Which, of course, they all are.

MV5BNTc3ODA4MTIxOV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNTAzOTAxNjE@._V1_UX182_CR0,0,182,268_AL_

Phoenix – Highly acclaimed German drama about a disfigured Holocaust survivor who returns to the rubble of Berlin to find her lover who may or may not have betrayed her somehow. I’m intrigued. (Criterion edition so you know it’s good)

MV5BMjU4NDExNDM1NF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwMDIyMTgxNzE@._V1_UX182_CR0,0,182,268_AL_

The Revenant – Leo gets attacked by a bear and left for dead somewhere in the cold nasty wilderness. Follow him on his brutal, punishing, but beautifully filmed, journey as he seeks to take vengeance on Tom Hardy (who is great in this, even if you can’t really understand most of what he says). Pretty amazing film, of not overly long. It will make you never want to go camping with Tom Hardy again. Or at least travel back in time and become a fur trapper.

imgres-1

Silicon Valley S2 – Pretty darn funny show about some tech nerds forging their way in the world of computers and stuff.

imgres-2

Veep S4 – Excellently funny show finds Elaine from Seinfeld as the Vice President of Amurica. Good times.

Black Dog Newsletter April 12 – 18 “A Dearth of Films Edition!”

12524399_491824837694249_1609259375516617126_n

Rawr! Fleas!

Pretty slim pickens (love that guy!) for new stuff this week. I don’t know how the studios decide when and how and when to release films on the home video but they have to do a better job than what was offered this week. That said, I managed to pick up a few smaller titles to satiate your desire for entertainment. That and we have a column by our newest member of the Black Dog team, Dylan, who will be periodically chiming in with movie reviews and such.

One other note – we’ll be at the Wise Hall Flea Market (fleas optional) on Sunday April 24th. We’ll have scads of DVDs and Blu Rays for sale. These things come best in scads. We’ll also have a few of our remaining T-Shirts up for offer (and a little cheaper) as well. Hope to see you out!

New Releases

71lvdcEgBkL._SY445_

Banshee Season 3 – One of my favourite shows in recent memory. It’s filled with gratuitous violence and sex and that’s OK by me. It’s like a little exploitation film but in TV series form. This season is no exception with some amazing fisticuffs and sexy shenanigans. If this kind of thing is your bag check it out. If not, there’s always Downton Abbey (which I also quite enjoy, even without the sex and violence).

MV5BNTMwNzkxMDUxN15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwOTM5NjQzNzE@._V1_UX182_CR0,0,182,268_AL_

Chi-Raq – Spike Lee’s latest serious (but funny at the same time) commentary on American culture and race finds a modern day Lysistrata fighting against gun-violence in the south side of Chicago. Features Wesley Snipes as a guy named Cyclops.

MV5BODYyOTMyNjMzMl5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwODgwNjQ3NDE@._V1_UY268_CR4,0,182,268_AL_

Faults – Cool-looking (and pretty good, says a couple of my sources) flick about cults and the weirdos who run them and the lost souls who get sucked into them. People are strange.

MV5BMjAwMzQzNTc5OV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNDgyMTU2NzE@._V1_UX182_CR0,0,182,268_AL_

The Forest – Scary horror movie about a woman who goes into Japan’s famed “Suicide Forest” looking for her sister (I presume she didn’t go camping) and ends up confronting some sort of supernatural force. I prefer a “Suicide Beanbag Chair”. Much more comfortable.

MV5BMTQ4MzcwMzAwOV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwMzk0MzgyNzE@._V1_UX182_CR0,0,182,268_AL_

He Never Died – Henry Rollins plays an immortal cannibal kind of guy who tries to lead a boring, low-key existence until one day…I bet I had you at “Henry Rollins plays an immortal cannibal”. Looking forward to this one!

Black Dog Video’s Favourite Comedies of All Time

We here at Black Dog Video love comedy. In movie form mostly. We love to recommend our favourite comedies to our favourite customers. Read more...

Black Dog Video Newsletter April 5 – 11 “We’ll Make You Laugh Edition!”

hero_EB20010121REVIEWS08101210301AR

My favourite comedy!

Everyone loves a good laugh, right? Well maybe not Ted Cruz. What’s with that guy? But here at Black Dog we love to laugh! Holy hotdogs do we ever. So we’ve taken it upon ourselves to create a list of what, we think, are the best comedic films ever made. We tried to keep it to 100 but found that quite difficult so we capped it at 115 (even that was hard!). Everyone has different ideas and tastes when it comes to comedies and I imagine that we’ve left off a few favourites of yours. No offence and none taken. Click here to see what we’ve concocted.

Also…we’ve reduced the late fees a bit on older titles to make your renting experience that much much more pleasant. Lates are now .50 a day on all old films. New releases are still $2 a day and new TV stuff $1. But you wouldn’t be late returning your films anyways, would you?

New Releases!

MV5BMTUzNzU1MzcxNV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwOTQ4NjU2MzE@._V1_UY268_CR3,0,182,268_AL_

Admiral – Historical action adventure drama about the Dutch fleet fighting against those bullies from England, France and Germany back in the days of yore, namely the 17th century. Won a bunch of Dutch awards for whatever that’s worth.

MV5BMTQzOTYwMzA4NF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwMDQyODIzNjE@._V1_UX182_CR0,0,182,268_AL_

Break Point – Mediocre looking comedy that I really only picked up so I could make a joke along the lines of, “Be a nice double bill with Point Break!” Hilarious. Ah, I’m an idiot. At least it has Oscar winning awesome dude JK Simmons in it.

MV5BMTY0NTU2ODM5Ml5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwMTAwOTA5NTE@._V1_UX182_CR0,0,182,268_AL_

Creep – Fine-looking little creepfest (see title) that finds a video guy answering a job posting on Craigslist from a guy who isn’t exactly what he makes himself out to be. What is he? Is he a Yeti? Cthulhu? A creepy weirdo? Looking forward to this one.

imgres

Doc Martin Season 7 – Haven’t seen a lick of this show but I hear it’s great from everyone that’s watched. You know who you are.

imgres-1

The Expanse Season 1 – Sweet-looking (and quite good from what I’ve heard) space TV series about a vast conspiracy that threatens a colony that dwells in our asteroid belt. Like Sci-fi? Like good exciting drama? Like other things? Then check this one out.

MV5BMTY1MDk4MDU5MF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwMTE5MjQxNzE@._V1_UY268_CR12,0,182,268_AL_

Ghost in the Shell: The New Movie – New (see title) Ghost in the Shell animated adventure sci-fi thingy to please all of you nerds. I can just picture the marketing folks sitting around trying to decide what to call this…”How about ‘New Movie’? Get’s right to the point. No confusion. Let’s do this thing!”

MV5BOTAzODEzNDAzMl5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwMDU1MTgzNzE@._V1_UX182_CR0,0,182,268_AL_

Star Wars: The Force Awakens – All of your favourites return in the new Star Wars film: There’s Ham Salad and his trusty giant space bear sidekick, that annoying robot who sounds like a whiny English butler, Cool Hand Luke, Princess Cocaine and Darth Vader’s helmet that looks like a Jack-O-Lantern that was left out on the porch until April. All kidding aside, it’s actually a pretty good flick (even if it’s just basically a re-hash of the the first one) and much better than those dreadful prequels with not a Jar Jar in sight!
