New Releases

What We Do In the ShadowsAn excellent comedy from New Zeland, starring and directed by Jemaine Clement of Flight of the Conchords and Gentlemen Broncos. The movie is a mockmentary that follows a group of roommates who happen to be vampires as they navigate through the modern world. This is the best comedy to come in to the store in a long time. Don’t miss it!

Da Sweet Blood of Jesus
A Spike Lee joint about an archaeologist who is compelled to drink blood after an encounter with an ancient artifact. The synopsis is very adamant that he IS NOT A VAMPIRE though. It seems like Spike Lee protests too much. Perchance he’s a vampire in denial?

Seventh Son
Jeff Bridges plays a dragon-vanquishing warrior out to discover a hero from an ancient prophecy that will conquer the dark queen Julianne Moore. Looks like a fun fantasy romp for the whole family.

Let Us Prey
A horror thriller about a police woman starting a new job in a small Scottish town only to be terrorized by a mysterious prisoner who can telepathically drive people insane. Sounds fun!

Cut Bank
A dark crime thriller about small town murder. Sheriff John Malkovich is on the case in his 10-gallon hat. Bruce Dern undoubtedly plays a crusty old grouch.

Kidnapping Mr. Heineken
Based on the true story about three childhood friends who hatch a brilliant idea to kidnap the heir to the Heineken fortune (Anthony Hopkins) and hold him for an exorbitant ransom. Sounds like a great plan, turkeys.

3 Coeurs
French romantic movie about a love triangle involving Charlotte Gainsbourg and two other people. French people really need to stop falling in love so much.

The Loft
A thriller about five friends who share a secret penthouse where they can go to indulge in their grossest fantasies until a woman turns up dead there and they have to come to terms with the fact that one of them must be involved. Well they’re all creeps for sure, but which one of them is a murderer?

Hello Ladies – Season 1 and Hello Ladies: THE MOVIE
An HBO series that stars Stephan Merchant as he makes his way from across the pond to L.A. to find true love. But is this tall, gawky, petty and stingy guy cut out for life in Hollyweird? Nope. Classic fish out of water awkwardness ensues. Also they made a movie to finish off the series.

Ray Donovan – Season 2
Liev Schreiber plays a man who fixes celebrity problems, but can’t control his own family. Jon Voight plays his ex-con father.

Sonny Boy – This sounds pretty awesome – A small-town crime boss accepts delivery of a stolen car, only to find there’s a baby in the back-seat. He and his transvestite “wife” cut out the boy’s tongue and raise him as a mute accomplice in their crimes. When the grown “Sonny Boy” escapes and tries to make contact with the outside world.

This is a review from my friend who loves this flick and runs Eyesore Cinema in Toronto (check out his great collection if you live in that city)
“Those who know me well know that this is one of my all time favourite films!
It completely devastated me at the first viewing! That powerful American dessert gothic modern Grimm fairy-tale setting! That beyond Oscar-worthy performance from David Carradine! This should have been the next Blue Velvet… instead, the film bombed when shocked theatre owners pulled it from screenings… resulting in the Director being essentially blacked-balled for the following decade. The movie was then dumped straight to VHS and never heard from again (except, of course, in awesome video shops that actually give a shit about awesome movies!)
Now, finally, I hold in my hands a two-disc edition featuring a widescreen version!!! I am very, very pleased!”

The Forbidden Door (aka Pintu Teralang) – Insane, awesome insanity from Indonesia (nice country) finds a famous sculptor whose life gets turned upside down when mysterious messages start to appear. Don’t know much more than that but here’s a portion of a review from the IMDB – “This is not horror for the pleasure of it and just to captivate the blood thirsty audience but it’s a horror movie full of feelings, questions, and just beautifully made. The horror is everywhere to be found: in ideas, in thoughts, psychologically, physically, in the eyes, in the touch…Each scene leaves you wondering and pondering.
Watch the credits entirely, because the last scene is after the credits: a less than 30 seconds scene that wraps up the whole movie like a ribbon that you want to undo to open and watch this movie all over, again.”

Black Dog Newsletter May 4th to 10th “First Week of May Edition!”

Wow. May is here already. What’s next, June? Spring be sprung after a grossly mild winter. Get your sweet butt out of the house, dance in the grass, pet that dog, eat a croissant, watch what we got. You know that you want to.

New Releases

 MV5BMTYyMzE2NTE5MV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNDI3ODI2MzE@._V1_SX214_AL_

Black or White – Good old Kevin Costner is in a custody battle to retain the rights to his granddaughter (who is black) that he helped raise over her entire life. Race relations aren’t going so well in the US of A at the moment if you haven’t noticed. Maybe this film will help cure all of that? Because, really, is there anything Kevin Costner can’t do?

 MV5BMjMyNzI1ODA3OF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwMTI5OTczMzE@._V1._CR54,54,1274,1940_SX214_AL_

Black Sea – Been a while since we had a cool submarine movie! Dreamy Jude Law has to square up with some shadowy folks so he takes a job driving a submarine (do folks still drive submarines?) to look for the famed Black Sea – another sub rumoured to be full of gold! Gold I tells, ya!

MV5BMjE1MTM4NDAzOF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNTMwNjI0MzE@._V1_SX214_AL_

50 Shades of Grey – Well here it is. Whips, chains and anal beads. I haven’t seen this (yet) but with IMDB key words such as perversion, spanking, female rear nudity, helicopter, based on a novel, sex toy, pubic hair, rich man poor woman, four word title, coitus, critically bashed, glider, ice cube, merkin wig, wine drinking, tied up while barefoot, kissing in an elevator, whip, jogging, pulling down pants, macbook air laptop and alternative lifestyle, I can’t wait! This movie has pretty much everything!

MV5BMjIyOTg1MTM0OV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMDk4NjkyMw@@._V1_SX214_AL_

Gone with the Pope – Famed cult oddity originally filmed in 1975 (but never finished – until a couple of years ago) about a dude who plans to kidnap the Pope and ransom him off and make every Catholic to pay $1 for his release. Sweet plan, bro. I have it on good authority that this film is fantastic!

MV5BODA4MTA3MjQwMl5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNzU1MDk3MTE@._V1_SY317_CR1,0,214,317_AL_

Halt and Catch Fire – TV series that chronicles the rise and fall and rise of computers in the 1980s. I tired to tell everyone back then that computers were a waste of time and money, that they were just a fad. I still stand behind my words. Time will tell, my friends, time will tell.

Masters of Sex Season 2 – Haven’t seen season 1 yet but I hear on good authority that this is a pretty great show. Come on, you know that you want to…

MV5BMjUzNTg0MzM3NF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNDg3NTY5MjE@._V1_SY317_CR0,0,214,317_AL_

Mr. Turner – Most excellent film from the very excellent Mike Leigh stars the always excellent Timothy Spall as famed painter J.M.W. Turner in this bio-pic. Expect some great acting, a little painting and some fine top hats.

MV5BMjMzNjcyMTgwNV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNjg3MzI3MjE@._V1_SX214_AL_

Playing it Cool – Nice little rom-com finds Captain America trying to write a screenplay or novel or opera (not too sure) about love and stuff. Problem is, he’s never had a successful relationship. What’s a guy to do? Fine cast – Aubrey Plaza (best name, like, ever!), Michelle Monaghan, Topher Grace, Martin Starr and Patrick Warburton as Dick, enliven the proceedings.

MV5BODMxNjAwODA2Ml5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwMzc0NjgzMzE@._V1_SX214_AL_

Selma – Excellent drama about Martin Luther King’s campaign for equality and the march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama in 1965. I’d like to say that race relations have come a long way in the USA but that really isn’t true, is it? Where’s Kevin Costner when you need him?
