Black Dog Video Newsletter for the week April 27 to May 3rd “Playoffs are Over Edition!”

Sigh…

Well, that was short and not particularly sweet. The playoffs are over for the local sporting team. Canucks are done. Time to get back to what is really important (besides actual life stuff) – watching movies! Good selection of films for your lovely eyes to feast upon this week.

New Releases

MV5BMTExMDIzMjE3MDReQTJeQWpwZ15BbWU4MDQxNzExMjIx._V1_SY317_CR188,0,214,317_AL_

Almighty Johnsons – No, this is not a TV series from New Zealand about a bunch of large penises solving crimes or something like that. It’s a TV series from New Zealand about four brothers who also happen to be the living incarnations of Norse gods. Drama and comedy, with or without big dicks, ensue.

MV5BMTgxNTEyMTYzOV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNzQ4OTg5MjE@._V1_SX214_AL_

The Boy Next Door – J-Lo (Jennifer Lopez to you non-internet, non-hip-talking folks) has an affair with her much younger next door neighbor with unsavory results. She also pensively looks out a window. I hear that this is quite a hilarious film. Too bad it’s not a comedy.

MV5BMTc4NDYzNTcyM15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNjQ5NzQ0MzE@._V1_SY317_CR0,0,214,317_AL_

Cake – J-An (Jennifer Anniston for all you…) plays a therapy patient who becomes fascinated with the suicide of a woman in her support group. Drama, and all that it entails, ensue.

MV5BMjA5MjIzODE3N15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNzUwNzYwMzE@._V1_SX214_AL_

The Gambler – Marky-Mark, taking time out from pretending he’s a good guy and not a racist thug, plays a fella with a gambling problem. He gambles, loses a bunch of money and, I presume, has one more shot at redemption. Expect some drama and many scenes of card playing and shifty eyes.

MV5BMjI2ODQ2NzUwMl5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNjU3NTE4MjE@._V1_SX214_AL_

Inherent Vice – PTA (Paul Thomas Anderson for those of you…) brings Thomas Pynchon’s novel to life in this fantastic (to some, boring to others) comedy/drama-modern-noir-gumshoe-thriller that finds drug-fueled Joaquin Phoenix on the case of a missing girlfriend. I so wanted to see this on the big screen, but alas…

MV5BMTAxOTMwOTkwNDZeQTJeQWpwZ15BbWU4MDEyMTI1NjMx._V1_SY317_CR0,0,214,317_AL_

Paddington – Fine family affair about a bear from Peru (?!) who travels to London for some reason – presumably he’s on vacation as London is a prime destination for bears from all over the world – who gets lost and then meets the Brown family who take him in. Does Paddington slaughter, eat and bury the Brown’s half-devoured remains in a shallow grave or is he the kind of bear who all friendly and cuddly? Only one way to find out!

MV5BMTk3MjQyNTUxNl5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNjM3Mjk1MzE@._V1_SX214_AL_

The Wedding Ringer – Some sort of comedy, that sounds suspiciously like that Adam Sandler film – The Wedding Dinger? Blinger? Zinger? Finger? I can’t remember. So many Adam Sandler movies, so little time. This one doesn’t have Adam Sandler in it but instead stars Kevin Hart as a shy guy that’s getting married who hires a best man from a company that does this sort of thing. At least that what I think it’s about. Don’t really care, to be honest.

MV5BMTUyMDY2MDE1MV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNDUyNjkwNDE@._V1_SY317_CR18,0,214,317_AL_

Wolf Hall – British costume drama about Henry the VIII. Drama, intrigue, Thomas Cromwell, a Pope, possibly some cross-dressing judging by the photo and, probably, some beheadings all figure into this well-received drama series.

New Releases

MV5BMjIzODg4NjY2Ml5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwMjY3MDgzMzE@._V1_SY317_CR28,0,214,317_AL_

Fortitude – TV murder mystery drama set where folks wear the skins and furs of dead hairy animals.

MV5BNTE1MTM2NjkzN15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNDU5MDUzMjE@._V1_SX214_AL_

The Honourable Woman – Bio-pic drama about Nessa Stein (Maggie Gyllenhall – man, I hate spelling the Gyllenhaal kid’s names!) who, despite inheriting her dads arms business (I have to assume the weapons kinds of arms, not, you know, real arms), promotes peace and reconciliation between Israel and the Palestinians.

MV5BMjMzNjMyMjU2M15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwMzA3NjQ0MzE@._V1_SY317_CR4,0,214,317_AL_

Girl Walks Home Alone at Night – How cool is this?! A film from Iran! Not just a film from Iran but a freaking vampire film from Iran!! Can’t wait to check this out.

MV5BMTcxMTM0Mjc1NV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwOTUyMzU2MzE@._V1_SX214_AL_

Little Accidents – Heavy-looking drama about the disappearance of a little boy in a small mining town still trying to recover from a tragic mining accident. Mining. Pretty much number one on the list of jobs I’d never want to do. That and adult diaper cleaning service.

MV5BMTY3MjQwNzYyNV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNTY3NDQ5MzE@._V1_SX214_AL_

Maps to the Stars – David Cronenberg’s latest skewers celebrity, Hollywood and, hopefully, has someone pull a gun out of their intestines. Not too sure about this last part. I haven’t seen it, but being a pretty big Cronenberg fan and with this stellar cast, its is quite high on my list. My very long list.

MV5BNDM4NjQ1MjI2M15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMzk0NTIyMQ@@._V1_SY317_CR8,0,214,317_AL_

Red to Kill – Insane, Hong Kong exploitation rape revenge film about a deranged psycho who goes all rapey at the sight of the colour red and who also happens to run a home for the mentally challenged. That can’t be good. Not for all tastes so please proceed with caution.

MV5BNjM5MDU3NTY0M15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwOTk2ODU2MzE@._V1_SX214_AL_

Tak3n 3 – Christ. Someone had stolen another one of Liam Neeson’s family members. Or his dog. Or his fish. Or his self esteem. Or something like that. Needs more 3s in the title. And let’s hope that the tagline “It Ends Here” is the truth or we’ll have to sit though Ta4en! Directed by the amazingly named Oliver Megaton.

MV5BMjIyMzczMDI0NF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNjI5Nzk3MTE@._V1_SY317_CR9,0,214,317_AL_

Two Days, One Night – The excellent Dardenne brothers (The Son) team up with the excellent Marion Cotillard to make this excellent little drama about a woman who learns that her workmates have opted for a nice fat pay bonus in exchange for her dismissal. Jerks.

MV5BMTczNDkyODA1N15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNjIwOTI4MjE@._V1_SX214_AL_

You’re Not You – After-school disease of the week-looking movie about a bunch of people with sparkling smiles, one of whom has ACLS.

Old Stuff Just In!

MV5BMTY5MTY5OTU4OV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNjE1MjA0MQ@@._V1_SY317_CR4,0,214,317_AL_

Day of the Beast – Awesome, crazy fun flick from Alex de la Iglecia (Last Circus) about a priest and a heavy-metal fan teaming up to stop the anti-Christ possibly being born on Christmas day. Huge hit way back at Cinemuerte. Remember those fun times?

699_DF_box_348x490_original

Put us in, coach!

Ah, it’s that time of year again, when a young person’s fancy turns to the violent ballet known as the Stanley Cup Playoffs. I have a love/hate relationship with the playoffs. I’m a hockey fan and a fan of the Canucks so I’d like to see them do well. But I also own a business (Black Dog Video) that is adversely effected by all of this. I’m happy when the team doesn’t make the playoffs but am also happy when they win. Here’s hoping that they sweep every series and win the cup in as few games as possible! Enjoy the games, or you can just rent Slap Shot.

New Releases

MV5BMjI5MzI0Nzk3OV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNTAyODExMzE@._V1_SY317_CR0,0,214,317_AL_

Antarctica: A Year on the Ice – Doc about folks living for a year in Antarctica. I think that I’ll pass on doing that. I’m not a penguin.

MV5BMTk0NzMzODc2NF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwOTYzNTM1MzE@._V1_SY317_CR0,0,214,317_AL_

The Babadook – Much ballyhooed horror number (William Friedkin calls it the scariest film he’s ever seen! That’s a bold statement coming from the guy who made THE scariest film ever – The Exorcist). It follows the tale of a troubled boy and his mom who are haunted by a dark spectre from a mysterious book that shows up at their house one day. You’ll be walking around for weeks croaking “Ba-ba-dook” I guarantee it! Just ask my family.Highly recommended.

MV5BMjA2ODM5MDE3N15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwOTIxNjc1MzE@._V1_SX214_AL_

Big Eyes – Amy Adams is a painter who paints famous works of people with large eyes. Christoph Waltz is her scheming husband who steals the credit for her work. Tim Burton is the guy who made this movie.

MV5BNTUzMDQ0MzA4OV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNDY3OTc2MjE@._V1_SY317_CR9,0,214,317_AL_

Escobar: Paradise Lost – Cool drama about a surfer dude who meets the woman of his dreams in Columbia. He then meets her uncle, Pablo Escobar. That must have been an awkward dinner. He’s played by noted VHS tape thief, Benecio De Toro, looking quite terrifying here.

Foyle’s War Season 8 – Foyle continues his wacky adventures in WWII England.

MV5BMTg4ODEwODg3Nl5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwODkyODMxMzE@._V1_SY317_CR4,0,214,317_AL_

Goodbye to Language – Latest from Jean-Luc Godard (I can’t believe he’s still alive, never mind still making films) about the relationship between a man, a woman and a dog. I’m sure it’s quite French and quite odd.

MV5BMTQ4NjI0NTY1NF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNzQ4NjI3MjE@._V1_SX214_AL_

I Am Steve McQueen – Shit. I wish. Although he’s dead, so maybe not. I guess I’ll just have to settle for this documentary.

MV5BMTY1OTc3OTIyM15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNjM0MDM3MzE@._V1_SX214_AL_

Looking Season 1 – Excellent HBO series about a bunch of gay guys living in San Fransisco. San Franscisky? Did you drive or did you flew?

MV5BNTk2NzU4OTc0Ml5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNzcwNzMwNDE@._V1_SY317_CR0,0,214,317_AL_

The Missing – Excellent TV series about a couple whose child goes missing while on vacation in France. That will put a damper on the good times.

Shameless Season 4 – What are the Gallagher clan up to these days you ask? Watch and find out! A very fine show that you should watch.

Hi ya, handsome.

This weeks prose will be short and sweet. You can bet on that. Not much action on the shelves. Probably explains the large amount of films over the past two weeks. Here’s lookin’ at you, kid.

New Releases

MV5BNTEzMzAyMjg1N15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNzYwNjQzMzE@._V1_SY317_CR5,0,214,317_AL_

Eurocrime: Italian Cops and Gangster Films that Ruled the 70’s – As one might surmise by the lengthy title, this is a nifty doc about some great genre films (many of which are available at your local Black Dog!) that came out of Italy in the 1970s. Fun flick!

MV5BNjcwNzMxMDE1Ml5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNTc4NjA2MTE@._V1_SX214_AL_

Pioneer – Norwegian film, from the director of Insomnia, about a guy obsessed with reaching the bottom of the Norwegian sea during Norway’s famous oil boom of the 1980s. You remember that boom, right?

MV5BMjU3NzUyMzY1Nl5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNTI5MTM5MzE@._V1_SX214_AL_

R100 – Crazy Japanese film about an ordinary guy who joins a club. One that is not very ordinary. They seem to specialize in guerilla acts of degradation. Lots of kicking, whipping, slapping, sloshing, spitting and grenades. Let the fun begin!

MV5BMjI5NjE4NTQyMl5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwMjE4NTgyMjE@._V1_SX214_AL_

Stray Dogs – Tough film about an alcoholic guy and his two kids trying to survive in Taipei. From the director of Goodbye, Dragon Inn and The Hole.

MV5BMTk5NTIxNDk4NV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNTQ1ODU0MjE@._V1_SX214_AL_

Wetlands – Demented sex-comedy from Germany finds a girl recounting her sexual adventures involving vegetables, her attitudes on hygiene, amongst other things, all while she’s being treated for something called an anal fissure. Not too sure I want to know what that even is. (at Commercial, soon to Cambie. Hopefully)
