CambieVillage2014_4x6_BACK Posters-v15_08_2014-Dawn-Chubai

Not too sure if you can all read that or not, but there are some things written down there about what’s happening.

If anyone wants a part of Black Dog history, here’s your chance. I need to sell my car, stat! You could be the proud owner of the car driven (amongst other things) by the owner of Black Dog Video! Be the envy of all your friends and enemies. Here’s the link. Open to all serious offers.

Less than 2 weeks to go on our Indiegogo campaign. Thanks everyone for your contributions and for coming in and renting. Mucho appreciato!

In Your Eyes

Amazing Spiderman 2 – More Spiderman flipping and zipping and bipping and bopping his way around town saving the world from a glowing Jamie Foxx, another Green Goblin guy, poison gorillas and the ebola virus. Man, is there anything Spiderman can’t do? Mayhem and lots of silly special effects, I presume, ensue. DVD and Blu Ray.

Boardwalk Empire Season 4 – One of the best casts on one of the better TV shows around. And a great opening theme song as well. Love me some Nucky. DVD.

Fading Gigolo – This one sounds icky and creepy. Old man Woody Allen pimps out some-what old man John Tuturro to various women in New York, including the likes of Sharon Stone and Sofia Vergara because, I guess, well, Hollywood. Sigh. DVD and Blu Ray.

My Boy Jack – Harry Potter plays the son of Rudyard Kipling as he goes of to have fun in the trenches of WWI. Good times. DVD.

Only Lovers Left Alive – Jim Jaramuch + Tilda Swinton + Tom Hiddleson + Sad Vampires = Hot times and one of the year’s best flicks. A couple of depressed vampires hang out in Detroit, play guitar, and pontificate over the lives they’ve lead. Enter a young feisty vampire to spice things up! DVD and Blu Ray.

Rosemary’s Baby – Remake of the Polanski classic about creepy Satan-worshipping neighbours and devil babies will really make you want to watch the Polanski classic all over again.

The Sacrament – From the director of the fine horror films House of the Devil and The Innkeepers comes this sweet looking horror number about a Jim Jones-type cult. Heard quite good things about this one. It’s on my list! My extremely long list! I’m always amazed how folks get suckered into these nasty cult things. DVD and Blu Ray.

Old Stuff Just In!

Judex (Criterion) – Cool, weird sounding French thriller from 1963 has magic, bankers and mystery! Sign me up! DVD and Blu Ray.

Hard Day’s Night (Criterion) – Fun flick about this band, The Beatles I believe they were called, and some of the fun hijinks those scamps got up to. DVD and Blu Ray.

Scanners (Criterion) – David Cronenberg’s head exploding sci-fi extravaganza gets the Criterion treatment. DVD and Blu Ray.

The Devils – Crazy Ken Russell flick from 1971 that has been banned, burned and bummed upon since it’s release. But we have it! (At Commercial now, soon to Cambie)

Coming Next Week

Brick Mansions
Young and Beautiful
Love Punch
Lucky Them
Normal Heart
Sons of Anarchy – Season 6
Walking Dead – Season 4

Watch some of these if it pleases you. And it will!

That’s it for this week, folks. There may or may not be Free Hugs for you next week as I’m heading out of town for some traveling. Hope to talk at you soon.

Free Hugs! What’s Hot and What’s Not. August 12th

Just wanted to throw out a big thanks to everyone who dropped by to wish us well and take part in our customer appreciation day this past Saturday. Very large thanks to Jason Zumpano for spinning some awesome sounds over at Commercial and to our generous customer, Aaron, who brought in a tasty cake for everyone to share at the Cambie store. Kudos! We gave away a couple of Blu Ray players to 2 lucky members, rented out scads of films in our sweet 2 for 1 deal, hung out and chatted with folks and generally had a very lovely time.

We have just under 3 weeks to go for our campaign to Save the Black Dog. Thanks to everyone who has donated so far and everyone who has come in to rent. It makes us feel as if we’re still doing the right thing and that we actually mean something to a fair number of people. We’re at 40% of or goal and hope to get over the 50% mark soon. Keep spreading the word! And thanks again!

In the Cambie hood we say bye to Benton Bros Cheese. They had wonderful, if expensive, cheeses. And we loved our cheeses. And we say hello to JJ Bean (we love our coffees) – they will eventually be taking over Gary’s old spot in the Cambie General Store. At least all that asbestos is gone.

In Your Eyes

Appleseed Alpha – More animated fun featuring (probably) monsters, robots, apocalyptic settings and sexy female warriors. Good times. At Commercial, soon to Cambie.

Batman: Assault on Arkham – Cartoon Batman is up his old tricks. The Joker is along for the ride, of course. Just judging by the title, it seems that there may be an ark made of ham involved. DVD.

Bears – Does a bear wear a funny hat and poop in the woods? You’ll have to watch this nature flick to find out. Aww, they’re so cute! Don’t you just want to cuddle them, then have them attack you, eviscerate you and leave you, still alive, in a shallow grave in the woods only to come back later and finish you off? Awww. DVD and Blu Ray.

Cas & Dylan – Crotchety old Richard Dreyfuss goes on a road trip with Orphan Black for some reason. Life lessons, tears and laughs, I presume, are shared. Directed by one of those 90210 kids. DVD.

Filth – James McAvoy is all filthy as a dirty, filthy cop in this badass take on the Irvine Welsh novel. You may need a bath after watching this. Or a shower. Or a sandblast. Your call. DVD and Blu Ray.

Frankie & Alice – Medical drama finds go-go dancer Halle Berry fighting for control of herself against multiple personalities, one of which is a southern white racist. That must make for awkward Thanksgiving dinners. DVD.

Hateship Loveship – Sequel to the under-rated Hateboat Loveboat finds feisty teenage girl making Kirsten Wiig (The Nanny) and Guy Pearce (The Father) get together for romance and all that it entails. DVD.

The League Season 1 – Excellent TV comedy about a bunch of knuckleheads who are into fantasy football. I’m told you need not worry if you don’t know anything about fantasy football (as I do – I assume it’s half-naked ladies riding unicorns that breath fire fighting each other) to enjoy this program. Are you game (get it)? DVD.

Locke – Guy drives around in his car and it’s intense, man! Like really, crazy intense! Oh, and he talks on his phone while driving! Intense, man! DVD and Blu Ray.

Midsomer Murders #24 – Being the first time we brought in a Midsomer Murder collection, we thought we’d start with number 24. You don’t have to have watched the previous 23 installments to know what’s going on. People love this!

Muppets Most Wanted – The Muppets are back along with Ricky Gervais and that funny lady from 30 Rock to entertain the socks right off your feet. DVD and Blu Ray.

The Railway Man – Colin Firth was captured and tortured by the Japanese during WWII and forced to build a railway over the river Kwai. Wait a minute… Anyways, years later he sets out to confront his captor. Hijinks, I presume, do not ensue. DVD.

Wrath of Varja – It’s kung-fu fighting time as Varja (no you didn’t read Vagina, perverts) brings the wrath. His wrath is stronger than your wrath! DVD.

Coming Next Week

Amazing Spiderman 2
Boardwalk Empire Season 4
Fading Gigolo
My Boy Jack
Only Lovers Left Alive
Quite Ones
Rosemary’s Baby
The German Doctor

Suggestions for your consideration…

The world seems like a strange place without Robin Williams in it. Here’s a great scene from one of his best films. RIP.

Free Hugs: The Too Hot in the Summer Edition. August 5th

Free Hugs from Black Dog

It’s too hot. There I said it. Gimme a day or two of rain and long pants. That’s all I ask. I’m getting a little tired of being sweaty and grimy all the time. Boy, I can complain about anything! That said…This Saturday! August the 9th! Customer appreciation day! Holy Toledo! There will be a draw at each store for a brand new spanking Blu Ray player! That’s not all! Rent any film in the store and receive a second, old title for free! (Of equal or lesser value. Nice try). That’s still not all! There will be some cool ear pleasures at Commercial Drive with the lovely and talented Jason Zumpano laying down the soundtracks to your life. There might even be cake. But don’t hold me to that. Maybe even a free hug or two. Hope to see all of your lovely, smiling faces out and about.

We’ve just added a new perk on the Indiegogo campaign page courtesy of our good friends at the Vancouver International Film Festival! Check it out here…

New Releases for Your Eye Pleasure

(sorry couldn’t find an image of the cover)

Californication Season 7 – Sexy Fox Mulder sexes it up for the final season of this up and down, in and out show. It’s Three’s Company with swearing and boobs.

Death Bed: The Bed That Eats! – Yes, you read that right. It’s killer bedroom week here at Black Dog (see Oculus). Not really all that much to say that hasn’t been said in the tile. A possessed bed eats those who try to slepp on it and do other stuff, like, um, build a little fort! Based on true events! * Blu Ray only.

Divergent – Latest in the long line of dystopian future, sci-fi, good-looking teens novels being turned into dystopian future, sci-fi, good-looking teens movies. Something about a dystopian future, sci-fi, good-looking teen finding out she’s not like other girls and has to fight the powers that be, one of which is Kate Winslet, to survive. DVD and Blu Ray.

Ja’mie: Private School Girl – If you’ve seen Summer Heights High, you’ll want to watch this. If you haven’t, what’s wrong with you?

Need for Speed – Ooh, another video game movie! Jesse, and his enormous head, from Breaking Bad stars in this chase movie that has elements of prison, revenge, Arizona, fear of heights, male rear nudity, being punched in the face, Detroit, hummers, a female soldier, a little twerking for the kids and some comic relief flowing through it to entertain you. DVD and Blu Ray.

Oculus – The second film in our killer bedroom series! This one is a cool looking horror number about a haunted mirror. You know, these pieces of furniture don’t really sound all that terrifying to me. I will watch it, still.
DVD and Blu Ray.

The Protector 2 – aka Tom Yum Goong 2 – Tony Jaa, the director of Ong Bak, Chocolate and The Protector and Tony Jaa’s amazing feet and flaming fists star in this martial arts epic that involves kicking, punching, snapping of bones, twisting of flesh and elephants. DVD.

Coming At’cha Next Week

Cas & Dylan
Frankie & Alice
Hateship Loveship
Muppets: Most Wanted
