Black Dog Newsletter for Week Ending August 5th

I hate birds. Well, let me re-phrase that, I strongly dislike birds. Not all birds mind you as I do enjoy some birds such as hummingbirds, eagles and emu’s. But I hate most of the crappy city birds that plague our fine town. I can’t stand the filthy, damn seagulls that are forever trying to snatch my burrito away from me at the beach. My beach burrito. Bastards. I am not a fan of crows in the spring when they are hatching their wretched chicks. I hate the sounds they make as they force feed the little monsters. They sound as if someone is choking a hobo with a garden hose. I hate how they dive-bomb you, looking to rip open your scalp and feast on the gooey innards. That said I do like seeing them flock to Burnaby at dusk every evening. Not too sure why they do that, but they look pretty cool. Most of all I despise the lousy pigeons that infest this city with their shittyness. I’ve been at war with these flying disease bags for over a year now. They insist on making a nest in the awning at the Commercial location. I’ve put up netting, bird spikes and a small sign, but to no avail. I thought I had broke all their eggs and smashed their nest this spring only to see all the gross feathers and hear the horror of their obscene chirping. Damn things. As much as I hate them, and as much as I fantasize about it, I just can’t bring myself to throttle them or snap their young stupid little pigeon necks. Now that they can fly I’ll have to get up there and try to rip out their nests and their shit and furniture. It’s gonna be ugly. We even had one of the little squabs fly into the store the other night. Only it was too much of an idiot to find it’s way back out. Stupid thing. A brave customer stepped in to help poor terrified Alex usher it out the door. Earned himself a free rental he did. Damn birds.

No credit card, bird? Sorry you can’t rent here.

New Releases for Tuesday July 30th

The Bletchley Circle – Handsome (of course it is) BBC production about 4 women in WWII who work together to crack some Nazi codes. Then later after the war, they hang out and try to solve a crime involving some murders. Murders most foul!

G.I. Joe: Retaliation – The Rock, The Channing Tatum and The Bruce Willis all run around shooting things and blowing shit up in this sequel that nobody asked for. That said, I’ll probably watch it as I like to see things get blown up. Blown up, real good. Also on the Blu Ray.

The Last Will and Testament of Rosalind Leigh – Nifty looking horror number about a guy who inherits a spooky house from his mom only to find out she was mixed-up in some sort of evil cult. Really, is there any other kinds of cults besides evil? Bonus points for having Vanessa Redgrave in it.

Shameless Season 1 and 2 (original British version) – Excellent British show about a family of siblings surviving basically on their own in some crazy anarchic environment. I’ve seen some of the American version – it’s quite good as well – and the source material is usually far superior so this sounds like it’s well worth checking out.

Old Stuff Just In on the Shelves and Eagerly Awaiting Your Eyeballs

Killer Party – Strange, bloody, nudity-filled, bee-infested, cheesy, haunted sorority-house, 80’s slasher flick classic! There is much love for this flick on the internets. Haven’t seen it yet, but It seems right up my alley.

Black Dog Newsletter for Week Ending July 29th

So I was wandering around the store, perusing the New Release section the other day, when I thought that I’d count up the number of movie boxes that had a gun (or many guns) on the cover. Twenty-seven boxes had a gun(s) on the cover. There were an additional 4 in the foreign section. It got me to thinking (audible groan). Why do we love guns in our movies so much? I imagine that some of you fine folk love guns in your regular lives as well. At least if you’re American, you might. But in reality, do guns really play such a prevalent part in that many people’s lives and in society in general? Do the guns and violence in films reflect society or is it all just a weird fantasy? I’ve only fired a gun once – a shotgun – I was out at a friend’s farm trying to shoot some skeets. I was terrible, didn’t hit one. I did manage to shoot a canoe on the other side of the field though. Showed that canoe, I did. I’ve never even seen a handgun in real life. But I do love my action films. The more violent the better, in my opinion. But I abhor violence in real life. So what point am I trying to make here? I dunno. Are guns so popular because of movies or are movies with guns as popular because of America’s infatuation with them? Do people find them sexy or something? That’s a debate that can go on well into the night, maybe with a nice bottle of bourbon. Just leave the actual guns out of it.

New Release for Tuesday July 23rd

Cole – Locally made indie effort from Carl Bessai finds a small town dude trying to make it in the big city by taking a creative writing course. And I think he kisses a girl at some point. Much drama, I presume, ensues.

The House I Live In – Excellent doc about the War on Drugs and what a criminally obscene and damaging and stupid and evil program this is and was and is. Bunch of goofs.

Kiss of the Damned – Mawr vampires! Hollywood writer hooks up with a vampire. Then the nasty vampire’s sister shows up and starts casusing problems. Vampire mayhem ensues. From Xan Cassavettes, daughter of John and Gena Rowland. Heard good things about this one for those of you who haven’t had their fill of vampires lately.

The Man Who Laughs – French production ( of course it has Depardieu in it, as if you had to ask) of the Victor Hugo tale about a dude with a terrible scar on his face that makes him look as though he is always laughing. But I doubt that he is. What’s a guy to do with that kind of affliction? Why join the circus as a freak of course. Sorry, couldn’t find a trailer with subtitles.

New World – Korean crime thriller about a dude who goes undercover in some sort of syndicate in order to help topple said syndicate. Love me a good crime number and there’s been lots of great stuff coming out of Korea (South that is) lately.

Orphan Black: Season 1 – Most excellent British thriller about a street-wise girl who witnesses the suicide of a woman who looks just like her. Much mystery ensues. It’s smart, sexy and pulsating with suspense or so says the box.

Pieta – A nasty loan shark goes about his business until his mom shows up. But is she really is mom? Will he give up his violent ways? Will mom join the family business. More greatness from Kim Ki-duk, Bad Guy, The Isle (again with the South Korea).

The Tower – Die Hard and the Towering Inferno have a baby and hatch it in, wait for it, South Korea. Now this is getting weird.

Trance – Danny Boyle’s, (the guy who made the Olympics, Trainspotting, Millions) latest finds James McAvoy getting mixed up with creepy Vincent Cassel and lovely Rosario Dawson and some stolen art and some hypnosis and some murder and some shots to the groin in this entrancing thriller. Get it? See what I did there? Also on the Blu Ray.

Twixt – Francis Ford Coppola is not only still alive, but he’s making movies. Ghost story movies! Ghost story movies with Val Kilmer and Bruce Dern. There has to be a punchline somewhere here. Also on the Blu Ray.

Welcome to the Punch – Again with the James McAvoy. If it’s not South Korea this week it’s bloody James McAvoy. And in another crime film. A crime film with really dumb name. He’s a detective hot on Mark Strong’s criminal trail. This actually looks pretty good. Also on the Blu Ray which may be late getting on the shelves.

Black Dog Newsletter for Week Ending July 22nd

I’m so old. I just turned 48. Forty-freakin’-eight! How’d that happen? When did I officially enter the realm of ‘old man’? When do I start getting discounts on movies, bus fare and various ointments? When do I have to start eating chopped steak and cut the corn off the cob? Where did my youth go? Where did my hair go? Where are my keys? It can be somewhat depressing to think about age and aging and…”hey you kids, get off of my lawn!” Sorry, where was I? Oh yes, I was talking about hamburgers and how…sorry, lousy old brain. As one gets older, one starts to reflect on all of the regrets and ‘what if’s’ that have passed on by. What if I didn’t get a girlfriend who went went to university, thus bringing me into the academic world? Where would I have ended up? Why didn’t I go to Lisa S.’s house for dinner that night? Why didn’t I bury that hobo in a deeper grave? Why did I drink all that crab juice? What if I hadn’t taken off my pants in the airport that time? Why did I give that speech at Larry’s wedding? The list is endless (as I’m sure is most folks). There’s really not much point dwelling on the past as you can’t really change it (unless I get that time machine I’m working on in the basement finished). What does any of this have to do with movies.? Hell if I know.

Just a reminder of our summer deals – 2 for 1 Mondays (all films), five old flicks for 10 bones on Wednesdays and Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday 2 movies for $7 – one old one new, 2 old. Lots of great films to be had. You must all be bored of the sun by now right? Hello?

New Releases for Tuesday July 16th

42 – Bio-pic about Jackie Robinson. Tells the story about how he was the first black baseball player to break into the major leagues. It’s set during the time when there was lots of racism in America. Good thing racism in the US has been erradicated and they’ve moved past all that nastiness. Ahem. Also on the Blu Ray.

Bad Kids Go to Hell – Lots of sex and blood and sexy bloodiness liven up this Breakfast Club meets The Grudge type of horror comedy. Six students meet for detention on a Saturday and are killed off for some reason. Some plot keywords include; impalement, stun gun, hit with a book, bowel movement, hit with a shovel, sex on a table, sex in the library and Abraham Lincoln. Exciting! Also gets points for having Judd Nelson in it.

Bullet to the Head – Old man (he must be older than me!) Sly Stallone plays a hitman who teams up with a detective to bring down a common enemy. Paula Dean? Is it too late to make Paula Dean jokes? Too soon? Points for dusting off Walter Hill to direct. Also on the Blu Ray.

Evil Dead – Full on re-make of the cult classic finds some kids at a cabin in the woods where they stumble upon a something titled Book of the Dead. It comes with a warning not to read it. Be pretty boring film if they didn’t. Very high on my list to see as I’ve heard that it’s gory and great and gory. Also on the Blu Ray. Red Band trailer –

Hell on Wheels Season 2 – Great show about building the railways in the old west. Throw in some revenge and horses and campfires and you’ve got a fine evenin’ of gettin’ entertained.

Jack Taylor Season 1 – That guy from Game of Thrones and Downton Abbey – you know the one, has an accent…handsome…walks around a says things? Ya him. He stars in this Irish cop drama that, word on the street has it, is quite excellent.

Silenced – Heavy drama from Korea about a guy who gets a job at a school for the hearing-impaired where he soon discovers some nasty shenanigans a happening. Much drama, I presume, ensues.

Under the Bed – Two brothers team to defeat some sort of creature or monster or entity or dust bunny that’s hiding under the bed. Must have been an Ikea bed – Nyvoll or Malm probably. Maybe just either move or have someone come in and take the bed away?

Wild Bill – Family crime drama finds a dude fresh out of the slammer who returns home to find that his two sons have been abandoned by their mum and are fending for themselves. Crime and family drama, I presume, ensue. For whatever reason the box art on the Canadian release airbrushed the words “WIld Bill” off the guys knuckles?! Now the box just looks weird. Come into the store and tell us that the box doesn’t look weird. I dare you! Also on the Blu Ray.

Black Dog Newsletter for Week Ending July 15th

I’m not too sure how many of you fine folks are familiar with the Fox Theatre on Main St. It used to be the most disgusting, putrid porn theatre that I’ve ever had the displeasure to set foot in (not that I’ve sampled many porn theatres in my time). A number of years ago (12?) a couple of friends and I made an attempt to turn it into a some-what legitimate part-time art-house/rep theatre, The Criminal Cinema. We took it over on the weekends, showed some cool cult films, sold beer and had fun with it. Unfortunately, it didn’t fare too well. As mentioned, it was a part-time experiment. The problem was that the other 4 days a week it still operated as a porn theatre. Every stereo-type of the old perverted dude still haunted the place during the week (and would show up every weekend looking for their smut fix). Yes, I’m talking fat guy with stained tank-top and suspenders holding up soiled track pants. I’m sure he wasn’t wearing any underwear either (try to scrub that image out of your mind). It was just too gross in there for people to come to our shows. We even tried handing out mini garbage bags to place on the foul seats but that just highlighted what a dump the place was. We closed it down after a couple of months. The only thing that was left behind was this fabulous mural in the woman’s washroom of teen heartthrob, Scott Baio, that was painted by our very own Black Dogger, Aliza.

Scott-Baio-Mural

With the recent announcement that the folks behind the Waldorf were set to take it over, I got to thinking about the mural with the hopes that they would keep it and all it’s awesomeness. It was even mentioned in a few articles that I read about and I think they said it was something cool and they hoped to keep it. Then I saw this photo and it looks as if some ass-hat has ruined it. Such a bummer. For shame.

bathroom-mural

Those cats have their work cut out for them trying to revive the building. It needs a complete sand-blasting, nose to tail. Take a look at these photos, but be warned, they are not for the squeamish or faint of heart. I couldn’t believe it got worse than when we were there, but I was wrong. I was very wrong.

New Releases for Tuesday July 9th

Admission – Comedy that finds the lovely and talented Tiny Fey as a college admissions officer who reconnects with the lovely and talented Paul Rudd who runs an “alternative” type of school. Is that gifted kid that’s lurking around the school Tiny Fey’s sprog she gave up for adoption years ago? Hmmm…Also on the Blu Ray.

Boy – Michael Jackson-loving Boy getting to know his estranged dad who returns home to find a bag of money he buried somewhere years ago type film from New Zealand. Whew! Supposed to be marvelous!

Dead Man Down – Good looking action film has good-looking Colin Farrell as the right-hand man of some criminal guy being seduced by good-looking Noomi Rapace who wants to do some kind of revenging. If Hitchcock and Tarantino had a baby it, not only would it be fairly gross and disturbing, but it may look a bit like this flick. Also on the Blu Ray.

Everybody Has a Plan – Yes, everyone has a plan. Mine is to eat some potato salad and prod the cat with a fork. Viggo Mortensen’s is to assume the identity of his dead twin brother in Argentina. Does he get more than he bargained for in doing such a thing? Maybe he should have just followed my plan?

The Gatekeepers – Doc about former heads of Shin Bet, the Israeli Security Agency. Something tells me that there won’t be a lot of laughs in this film.

The Host – This has nothing to do with the fine Korean monster movie. This one, for better or for worse, is from the author of Twilight. It concerns the plight of waxy-looking humans who are being taken over by some aliens or bugs or evil dust bunnies or something. Also on the Blu Ray.

My Awkward Sexual Adventure – Very good (from what I hears) Canadian comedy about a dude who’s terrible at doing the sex who enlists the help of an exotic dancer to help him gain experience in all things of a sexual nature. He embarks on a naughty journey into the world of strip-clubs, S&M, sexy massage parlours, rusty trombones, Cleveland steamers and who knows what else.

Pickin’ and Grinnin’ – A couple of plucky, loveable loser brothers embark on a road trip for one last shot at musical redemption. Much humour and maybe even a life-lesson or two, I presume, ensue.

A Simple Life – Great little Chinese flick about a “free-spirited” maid who suffers a stroke and them moves into an old folks home. Sounds hilarious.

Spring Breakers – Harmony Korine (Kids, Gummo) kinds tries to go mainstream with this trashy piece of trash cinema about four girls who get in over their heads during spring break. James Franco shows up as a sleazy, corn-row haired, silver grill grinnin’ idiot who wants everyone to “look at his shit”. Part fun, part gratuitous pointlessness – maybe that’s the whole point of spring break (which, to me, looks like a level of Dante’s Inferno)? Also on the Blu Ray.

This Girl is Badass – Martial arts Thai film featuring the star of the awesome flick Chocolate. Don’t know the plot, doesn’t matter. For those of you who like their asses in the realm of kicked. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3mI_nQJBZE
