Black Dog Newsletter for Week Ending January 6th

This is it. The last newsletter. For the year. But fear not, we’ll be back to celebrate and mock films and life and hobos and whatever else we may come across in the year 2014. I hope that everyone had a swell 2013. Or at least the end portion of this year. I hope that it ended better for you than it did for us. I hope that there were less rocks thrown through your windows early Christmas morning than us. Yes, that’s right, some son-of-a-grinch chucked a huge rock through the window of our Commercial location. My sprog, Swanson, answered the phone at 6:30 am (he’d been awake since four because Christmas) to tell the police that he couldn’t wake me up because we had a plan that we wouldn’t get up until 7:30 to open the gifts. I ambled down to the store, still a bit drunk from making merry on Christmas Eve to chat with the Heat and view the damage. Yep, there was a big hole in the window with a huge rock laying on the floor. We slapped up some plywood (thanks, Garn!) and then had the window replaced the next day. Of course insurance didn’t cover the cost. I love insurance! Anyways, it was a shitty thing to have happen but in the big scheme of things, it’s not all that big of a deal.

We’re open noon until 8 New Year’s Eve if you need/want to drop in and grab some flicks to celebrate the passing of 2013 and the birth of 2014. We’re also open New Year’s Day noon until 11pm to provide you with all of your hangover film needs. What’s your favourite go-to film for that type of occasion?

There’s only a couple of films released over the past two weeks so we’re going to start our staff picks for best of the year today!

New Releases this week

MV5BMTQxNTc3NDM2MF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNzQ5NTQ3OQ@@._V1._CR28,28.649993896484375,1271,1991.0000305175781_SX214_

Don Jon – Joseph Levitt-Gordon, or Gordon Joseph-Levitt writes, stars and directs this romantic comedy about a studly ladies-man that’s addicted to internet porn. Then he meets Scarlett Johansson. Might she be able to divorce him from his right hand and have him see her as a potential mate? I think that what this film is about anyways. Also on the Blu Ray.

MV5BMTg0OTA5ODIxNF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNTUzNDg4OQ@@._V1_SX214_

Insidious 2 – More insidiousness from James Wan and some ghosts and a skinny Rose Byrne and a perplexed Patrick Wilson. Didn’t think all that much of the first one but I’m willing to give this a try. I love me some horror! Also on the Blu Ray.

Black Dog Video’s Staff Picks of the Year

Here are some links to what I enjoyed the most this year. There’s a lot of ones I didn’t get to see yet (Before Midnight, Her, Inside Llewyn Davis) and some of these may not be the best films, but the following are what I had the most fun with. Listed in alphabetical order…

http://boxd.it/9z1i

http://boxd.it/9zhA

http://boxd.it/9zhK

John’s Picks

Upstream Colour
The Hunt
Blue is the Warmest Colour
White House Down
Frances Ha
The Great Beauty
I’m So Excited!
Hannah Arendt
Much Ado About Nothing
Before Midnight

Josie’s Picks

In no specific order other than the goofy ass category I give them. I watched probably the fewest movies in any given year of my entire life in 2013. Very little TV watching either.

Best Giallo Influenced Art-Film disguised as Ryan Gosling porn.

Only God Forgives – Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn, owned by Kirsten Scott Thomas as Cruella De Mob Mother.

Best Stupid Summer Blockbuster

Pacific Rim – Rock em Sock em giant Robots fights a terrible script and Alien Kaiju. You don’t care that Idris Elba has to say things like “We’re cancelling the Apocalypse.” And, you shouldn’t care. mindless big screenery. I think it may suffer on disc unless you have a huge ass TV, which you probably do.

Laugh Out Loud Funniest Movie that I expected to be really lame

This Is The End – The best Apocalypse Buddy movie of all time, The Citizen Kane of Apocalypse Buddy Movies. (sorry Vertigo, you don’t yet have the best movie ever swagger for that joke, yet) Most heartfelt nonsense of the year. Also: Danny McBride. nuff said.

Best Movie that was on Everyone’s list last year, because they saw it in the theatre and I didn’t Memorial Trophy

Django Unchained – Obviously. Completely over the top: Samuel Jackson should have got an Oscar for his most complex role ever. Too much DiCaprio (not always a bad thing), to my mind, but otherwise, it stays with me more positively than Inglorious Basterds.

Most disappointing movie that had potential to be really awesome.

Man Of Steel – I want a movie about Jor-El – Space Dad Adventurer. The stuff on Krypton is the best sci-fi all year. It goes downhill slowly from there until the third act where it gets slightly less subtle than the ending of any number of Matrix movies. What is it with Superhero movies and their inability to have decent third acts, these days? Sheesh. I do love that both his dads are “Robin Hood.” That may be the best thing about it. I spent half the movie doing my nails.

Worst use of Wolverine in 2013 award

There is some stiff competition for this award. In the comics Wolvie is every second thing you read from Marvel. Some of the best Wolverine comics are about his ties to Japan, and Bushido, Yakuza, Silver Samurai, The Viper, Lady Deathstrike, etc. But this flick is such a muddle. Weirdly paced and dull. Wolverine might be over saturated to many of us nerds, but we’re still waiting for an actual “Wolverine movie.”

TV Shows that I actually Still watch

Best New Show that I realy hope keeps on being as awesome in season 2.

Orange Is The New Black – Light years ahead of Jenji Kohan’s Weeds, which I also loved. But this show is the real deal, at least Season 1, Sopranos, Wire level TV.

Most Consistently Interesting Network show

Person Of Interest. Great ensemble, a show that is willing to grow and change up its story as the concept matures, making it a very Meta show.

Most Disappointingly ‘Network’ of all the SF that is happening on TV right now.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. – It’s okay, but has yet to except a few moments here and there really capture what I personally want out of such a show. More Steranko, less Whedon.

Torten’s Picks

Fave 10 movies of the year:

1) The Wall (Germany)
2) Graceland (Phillipines)
3) Post Tenebras Lux (MEX)
4) The Deep (DK/Iceland)
5) Only God Forgives (DK/USA)
6) Amour (FR)
7) Silence (Germany)

Great movies were in short supply this year so the last 3 are TV!

8)Parade’s End (GB)
9)Rectify (USA)
10) Top Of The Lake (NZ)

Shobi’s Picks

The Hunt – best film of the year for me, how easily someone’s words can have everlasting consequences. Mads Mikkelsen is gold.

Ain’t Them Bodies Saints – out on DVD in the next few weeks. One of my favourites from VIFF this year. If you like Badlands this is a great contemporary film with the same feel.

The Gatekeepers – a documentary on the Shin Bet (Israel’s CIA). Candid interviews with past heads of Shin Bet. Highly political but incredibly interesting.

Frozen Ground – My main man Nicolas Cage plays opposite an evil john Cusack based on events of Alaska’s most notorious serial killer.

Broken – Tim Roth plays a good guy in this! Great dark, dark British film with some heart centred around a cul de sac and the people that inhabit it.

Killing Them Softly – filmmaker Andrew Dominik has made only perfect movies (Chopper, The Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford). This film about the current underbelly of America is so good, watch it and go watch his others if you haven’t seen those! (Be warned though, strong subject matter as they say)

I hope that everyone has a safe and happy New Year’s and I hope to see you all in 2014. Viva la Video Stores!

Black Dog Newsletter for Week Ending December 23rd

They say that if you put an infinite number of monkeys in a room with an infinite number of typewriters that eventually they’d write the complete works of Shakespeare or something like that. What I know is, not only would this scenario be awesome and hilarious, but it would be a big crazy disaster. Just think of all the monkey poop all over that room! Who’s going to clean up all that monkey poop, you? Not me, that’s for sure. Well since I won’t be able to get an infinite number of monkeys (I could only round up 9) in a room with all those typewriters, I’m gonna take off writing the newsletter next week (not that I equate this thing with Shakespeare or anything). It’s the holidays and there aren’t any new releases next Tuesday anyhoo.

Monkeys-typing-Shakespeare

Come on monkeys, this newsletter isn’t going to write itself!

This Saturday we have a couple of exciting doin’s a transpirin’ at the Black Dogs. Over at the Commercial location, local musical hero Jason Zumpano is going to be spinning some festive records in the afternoon between 3 and 5. Drop by for a listen, say hi, rent a flick. You’ll be a better person for it (note – no guarantees that you’ll be a better person for it). At Cambie we’re having a big DVD and Blu Ray sale once again. This time however we’re throwing in a whole pile of new, previously-loved titles. They make great stocking stuffers for the ones you love. Or hate. Depending on the title you choose. Speaking of stuffing one’s stocking, we have lots of our fabulous Black Dog underwear for sale as well as gift certificates and Black Dog tote bags! One stop shopping!

Oh and I should also mention that all of our old title Crimbo (it’s what the cool kids call Christmas these days) movies can now be rented for the small sum of $3! But they only rent for 2 days. So there’s that.

New Releases for Tuesday February 17th

MV5BMzYxMTU1MDg1N15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMDkwNzU4Ng@@._V1_SY317_CR131,0,214,317_

Cottage Country – Canadian comedy (don’t let that put you off) with funny-man Tyler Labine (Tucker and Dale vs Evil) as a dude who wants to propose to his girlfriend up at their nice cottage (cabin for all you west-coasters). The only problem? His weirdo brother and his weirdo brother’s free-spirited girlfriend tag along for the ride. Nothing a little axe work can’t take care of though, right?

MV5BNDc2NjU0MTcwNV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMjg4MDg2OQ@@._V1_SX214_

Elysium – Fairly disappointing sci-fi number from the director of the amazing District 9 finds a bald, shiny Matt Damon attempting to escape a ruined Earth and head up to a giant space station run by Jodie Foster (with the worst accent in the history of the universe) so he can be cured of some radiation poisoning he picked up at work (hate that). I had high hopes for this and I started off liking it quite a bit. But then about half-way through I stopped liking it for some reason. Too bad. But you might like it! Also on the Blu Ray.

MV5BMjE2MzI0MzkyNV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMjQ2MDM2OQ@@._V1_SX214_

The Family – Old Mafia boss Bobby DeNiro drags his wife (Michele Pfeiffer) and kids to France to live under the witness relocation program. I’m guessing that comedy and action hijinks ensue as the fishes out of water have a hard time adjusting to the French way of life. Tommy Lee Jones and his enormous head are along for the ride as the guy in charge of keeping them under wraps. Does DeNiro’s former business partners track him down? Probably. Directed by Luc Besson for some reason. Also on the Blu Ray.

justified_season_4_dvd__uv_copy_raw

Justified Season 4 – Timothy Olyphant swaggers around the town as the sheriff and the wonderfully named and massively foreheaded Walton Goggins crimes it up in Season 4 of this great TV show.

MV5BMTQ4OTQxNzc0N15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwOTQxOTU5OQ@@._V1_SY317_CR2,0,214,317_

Kick-Ass 2 – Jim Carrey replaces (even if it’s not really possible) Nic Cage in the sequel to the totally fun, stupid and violent Kick-Ass. Hit Girl and Kick-Ass team up once again, when not trying to fit in as regular teen-agers, to fight the evil menace that was once know as Red Mist. Violence and comedy, I presume, ensue. Also on the Blu Ray.

MV5BMjI3Mjk5MTUxOV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNTMyNzY3OQ@@._V1_SX214_

Lone Ranger – Why does this movie exist? So weirdo Quentin Tarantino can put it on his best of the year list? Johnny Depp walks around with a dead crow on his head pretending to be Native American while some guy named Armie Hammer (can’t be a real name me thinks) plays the Lone Ranger in Gore Verbinski’s too long western twaddle. Also on the Blu Ray.

MV5BMTUwODUyODI0Nl5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNzAxODY2OQ@@._V1_SX214_

Percy Jackson: Sea on Monsters – As the box boldly states, “More Action, More Fun, the Best Percy Yet!” Since there’s only one other Percy Jackson film, that’s not much of a claim to fame. The amusingly named Logan Lerman is back as the son of Poseidon fighting all sorts of monsters (mostly from the sea I imagine). I knew a guy a long time ago that we called Poseidon. He was an older guy that, for some reason, liked to hang out with my friends and I. He had a big beard so he was known in our circle as Poseidon, God of the Beard. Wonder what ever happened to him….Also on the Blu Ray.

MV5BMTg0NTIzMjQ1NV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNDc3MzM5OQ@@._V1_SY317_CR0,0,214,317_

Prisoners – Just in time for the festive season comes this thriller about child abduction, torture and murder. Hugh Jackman (who on the cover looks like a wax figurine of Hugh Jackman that has been left out in the sun for too long) plays a dad whose daughter, along with his neighbour’s daughter, is taken. Neckless Jake Gyllenhall is the cop heading up the investigation. Who took the girls? Was it the weirdo Paul Dano who drives the crappy looking RV around town? What lengths will Wolverine go to find out? This is an excellent, tense thriller. It will probably be on my best of the year list. Also on the Blu Ray.

MV5BNTI1ODY3MTQwNl5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMjU5MjMxOQ@@._V1_SY317_CR0,0,214,317_

Would You Rather – Nasty, but fun, looking horror number about an eccentric dude (played by the eccentric and awesome Jeffery Combs – Re-Animator) who invites a bunch of desperate people over to his mansion with the idea to see how far they will go for untold riches.

Coming in 2 Weeks

Don Jon
Insidious Chapter 2

Keep your eyeballs peeled (not literally, of course) for the Black Dog year end top picks for the year of movies that we saw in the year 2013.

I hope that everyone has a safe, happy, food and booze fuelled holiday. Talk at you soon!

Black Dog Newsletter for Week Ending December 16th

So I was driving home from playing hockey up at UBC (always have to say “up at” when referring to a place like UBC because it’s far away and on a slight incline) this past Saturday night. I’m always in quite a good mood after playing hockey – the combination of exercise (hockey exercise to be precise), beer, fun and whatnot always puts my a fine mood. Traffic is what it is in Vancouver…read more

So there’s this thing called Christmas or Xmas or Crimbo approaching. Some or most of you may have heard of it. Apparently it’s a time to give gifts to family members, friends, pets and video store clerks. Hah! Stumped as to what to buy for a loved one? Might we interest you in a swell pair of Black Dog underwear? They are amazing. I’m wearing a pair right now. So comfy! They are hand-made by local designer Oona Clothing. $15 for the ladies, $25 for the dudes. I highly recommended them. We also have gift certificates to stuff in someone’s stocking if that pleases you.

New Releases for Tuesday the 10th of This Month

MV5BMjExNjAyNTcyMF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwODQzMjQ3MDE@._V1_SY317_CR0,0,214,317_

Despicable Me 2 – More loveable antics from Gru and the adorable minions in this fun romp that’s great for the whole family! Provides a good bonding opportunity to connect with your kids while enriching all of your lives. And it’s on the Blu Ray.

MV5BMjMwNDU1NzMzM15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNTY3ODk1OQ@@._V1_SX214_

Drinking Buddies – Romantic comedy that finds two good-looking (TV good-looking!) kids working in a Chicago brewery together and flirting a lot. Only problem is they are in separate relationships. Can beer be the thing that brings them together? Of course it can, is there anything that beer can’t do?

MV5BMTM3NTg2NDQzOF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNjc2NzQzOQ@@._V1_SX214_

Fast and Furious 6 – So I thought that it would be a good idea to watch this around 11:30 Saturday night after hockey and several delicious beers as part of a double header (Anchorman being the 1st film). I think I made it about 45 minutes in before I started dozing off. I don’t remember much of anything from the movie except some hazy flashes of the erie, sad spectre of Paul Walker, Vin Diesel grunting his lines while his head looks like a fleshy bullet, my wife snoring beside me on the couch, people flying through the air – a lot – off of bridges, from cars, trucks and planes (I don’t think that gravity and the laws of physics exists in the F & F world). women with alarmingly skinny bodies and giant heads, The Rock looking huge and shiny, lots of close-ups if bums in bikinis and a chase involving a plane on the world’s longest runway (like seriously, the runway must have been at least 50 miles long!). Couldn’t tell you what it was about or if it’s any good. Also on the Blu Ray.

MV5BMTUxMzU5NjM3Ml5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwMTc1OTcxMDE@._V1_SX214_

Man of Tai Chi – Canoe Reeves directs (yes you read that right) this martial arts/fight club type of action flick. Looks like fun.

MV5BMjI0OTEyMTQ0OF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwMjQwMzM2MDE@._V1_SY317_CR3,0,214,317_

Seasoning House – What I thought might have been the latest Gordon Ramsay reality cooking endeavour turns out to be a cool-looking revenge horror shocker about a deaf girl who has to care for a bunch of enslaved women forced to service some disgusting military types. Of course it wouldn’t be a revenge thriller without some sweet revenge-type proceedings. Looking forward to this one. Also on the Blu Ray.

MV5BNjc1NjIyMzk5M15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMDk2NjE3OQ@@._V1_SX214_

Touchy-Feely – From the director of the fine flicks Humpday and My Sister’s Sister come this nice little number about a massage therapist who, all of a sudden, has an aversion to touching humans. I can see that might cause a bit of concern for her and her career.

MV5BMTQ5ODAwNDAzOF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMDUyOTc0OQ@@._V1_SX214_

Sightseers – My most anticipated flick of the week/month is this new horror/comedy/hipster/road trip film from Ben Wheatley (Kill List). A young couple goes on holiday and it turns dark and bloody and hilarious and disturbing and gruesome and quite amoral. Yes please!

Black Dog Newsletter for Week Ending December 9th

So it seems that the Black Friday “disease” is creeping across the border as many shops around town did their own (Canadian) version of the shopping orgy that goes on the day after the American Thanksgiving. Is it just me or does it not seem ironic that immediately after Americans give “thanks” for all that is good and right in their world that they feel the need to stampede to the closest nightmare Walmart, Best Buy, Costington’s or whatever to trample each other so they can save $13 on an iProduct or get some really cheap towels? I couldn’t think of anything I would rather not do – perform surgery on myself with a warm spoon, visit a pig farm dressed as a mafia boss (read more), walk barefoot through Grandview Park – then plunge myself in the throngs of drooling, short-fingered vulgarians clamouring over the corpses of their fellow shoppers to snag the best deal. Want proof of the madness? Read more…

“Glargh! Must save money, lose dignity”

For a more civilized shopping experience, drop into the Cambie location this Saturday. We’ll be featuring a pile of previously viewed DVD and Blu Rays on super special! How does half-price sound to you? Sounds pretty good to me. All of our previously loved DVDs and Blu Rays will be on sale for a meagre $5 each, 2 for $8 or 3 for $10. First come first serve. No pushing, shoving, stabbing, or bludgeoning allowed.

New Releases for Tuesday December 3rd

MV5BMzM0MjU1MzUzMF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMjcwNDQyOQ@@._V1_SY317_CR0,0,214,317_

All the Boys Love Mandy Lane – Much ballyhooed, for some reason, teen-horror flick about the virtuous Mandy Lane and all the boys that want to get next to her. They all head up to a cabin in the woods where someone starts murdering everyone. This one is finally making it’s DVD debut 7 years after it was made by the director of Warm Bodies, 50/50 and The Wackness.

MV5BNTcxMzMxNTEyMF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwODIxNjg5OQ@@._V1_SX214_

Jayne Mansfield’s Car – Family drama starring a bunch of actors – John Hurt, Kevin Bacon (mmm bacon), Robert Duvall and a ton of others (this film will make the 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon game much easier). Directed by Jian Gomeshi’s new best friend, Billy Bob Thornton.

MV5BMTA1NTg0MTQ4NTleQTJeQWpwZ15BbWU4MDgxNDc2NTAx._V1_SX214_

Lilyhammer Season 1 – Excellent show (even if it’s from the dreaded Netflix) that finds mobster and wicked guitar player Steven Van Zandt fleeing to Norway after he testifies against his former, shall we say, associates.

MV5BMTc5NzAyOTQyNF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNzQ1MDc4OQ@@._V1_SX214_

Mortal Instruments: City of Bones – Another science fiction teen fantasy thing that finds a bunch of ridiculously good-looking teens fighting demons in and alternate reality version of New York. There seems to be many opportunities for jokes (a good title to make a porn parody for sure) here. Also on the Blu Ray.

MV5BMTQzMzMwNDExMV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMzE5MjU3OQ@@._V1_SX214_

Prince Avalanche – Seems that David Gordon Green has learned that his strength lies in these solid little indie efforts after a few missteps with James Franco (Your Highness) and Jonah Hill (The Sitter). This one finds Paul Rudd, a sweet moustache and Emile Hirsch working on the highway on 1988 to escape their dull city lives. Also on the Blu Ray.

MV5BMTkyNDUxODg3MV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNjE5OTY2OQ@@._V1_SX214_

Smurfs 2 – Why bother? (Might be late on the shelves, if anyone cares)

MV5BMTQyNjE2NDcxN15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNzkxMjY2MDE@._V1_SY317_CR12,0,214,317_

Wolf Children – Excellent Japanese animated fare from the director of Summer Wars finds Hana falling in love with a Wolf Man. After the Wolf Man’s death, Hana decides to move to a rural town to continue raising her two wolf children Ame and Yuki. Yes you read all of that right. Also on the Blu Ray.

MV5BNzg1MDQxMTQ2OF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMTk3MjAzOQ@@._V1_SX214_

The Wolverine – Mr. Wolverine travels to Japan to become a samurai and eat sushi with his pointy claws and while there he becomes embroiled in some sort of conflict. Of course he does. What were you expecting a nicely acted sombre drama? Driving Mr. Wolverine? Not too sure why Wolverine needs a samurai sword as he has a bunch of them that shoot out of his hands when he gets angry or horny or something. And really, is that the best title they could come up with? Adding a “The” to the title to differentiate between this and Wolverine? Also on the Blu Ray.

Black Dog Newsletter for Week Ending December 1st

Just wanted to throw at you swell bunch a folks a big shout out to all who brought in, what may be, the best and biggest haul of Food Bank donations in recorded (Black Dog) history! Two hundred and fifty-one pounds of edibles! My car will be full, not of terrible food stuffs such as eyeball goulash and fermented duck fetus, but of wonderful, nourishing foods like Mr. Noodles and Spam (just kidding, you’re all wonderful). It was a good haul and I hope that many of you were pleased to have your unsightly late charges destroyed before your very eyes. And I hope that many of you who stopped coming to the store because of those egregious, embarrassing late fees will come back and be upstanding renters once again.

I like to envision the donations looking something like this…

imgres

But in reality, 251 pounds of food looks more like this…

Keep an eye out in the coming weeks for some special events that might be happening at the stores. These might include a big DVD sale, a local musician spinning some LPs for your enjoyment or a parade of monkeys riding unicorns. Who knows? New Releases for Tuesday November 26th

breaking-bad-season-5-poster-1

Breaking Bad: Final Season – The last 8 episodes brings us to the conclusion of the tale of that loveable drug kingpin, Walter White, and all the wacky situations he finds himself in. Great stuff. Sad it’s over.

MV5BMTkyMjk5NDA0OF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwODEwNjU0MDE@._V1_SY317_CR4,0,214,317_

The Canyons – The much ballyhooed flick from director Paul Schrader (Hardcore) and the three-named writer of American Psycho that stars train-wreck Lindsay Lohan and porn star James Deen (no relation to that other famous porn star, Paula Deen). There’s a great article written about the filming of this thing. Worth your time if you deem it worth your time. Also on the Blu Ray.

MV5BMTM5NTkzNzk0NF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMTQwNjE5OQ@@._V1_SY317_CR0,0,214,317_

Getaway – Lame looking car chase film with lame looking Ethan Hawke who plays a guy named Brent Magma or something like that, whose wife is kidnapped for some reason and he then chases people all over town with Selena Gomez’s car (I believe that there’s a Selena Gomez in the car as well). Rated PG-13 for intense action, violence and mayhem throughout, some rude gestures, and language…just so ya know…Also on the Blu Ray – which is late…

MV5BMjIyMDM2NTUyNF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwOTQ2NzAzOQ@@._V1_SX214_

Hannah Arendt – Bio-pic of philosopher and political theorist Hannah Arendt (hence the title), who reported for The New Yorker on the war crimes trial of the Nazi Adolf Eichmann. Sounds like a lot of laughs.

MV5BMTM5NTQ3MTYxN15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwODE2Nzk3OQ@@._V1_SX214_

Red 2 – In a sequel that nobody asked for, the old (and yes I do mean old) gang is back! You’ve got the Willis, you’ve got the Malkovich, you’ve got the Mirren, the Hopkins and a bunch of other folks running around shooting at each other while saying witty asides such as “What happens in the Kremlin stays in the Kremlin!” Heh-heh, rich. No Rob Ford videos this week. He’s slowing down. I was hoping to get a Rob Ford advent calendar this year. Come on Rob Ford, do something idiotic!

Instead we have this…I haven’t seen the original video but this is worth watching even if it is a little disturbing, mainly because it’s an awful song.

Black Dog Newsletter for Week Ending November 25th

So I was Lying in bed the other morning thinking about the Ku Klux Klan. I read or saw somewhere in the good old US of A, that some folks dressed their small child up in the silly KKK gear for Halloween. I’m no prude when it comes to Halloween regalia…read more…

There’s only a couple of days left to cash in your Food Bank items in exchange for your embarrassing late charges at the Commercial location. Bring in something nourishing and tasty and we’ll destroy your outstanding late charges right before your very eyes. Don’t bring in things like jellied grass, creamed eels, eyeball gumbo or expired clams in geoduck sauce.

New Releases for Tuesday November 19th

MV5BMjE2ODg4MDUzOF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwMzk5MjkxMDE@._V1_SY317_CR0,0,214,317_

All is Bright – A couple of Pauls, Giamatti and Rudd, star in this dark holiday comedy about a couple of losers trying to make it big selling Christmas trees in New York. Good luck, Pauls!

MV5BMTYxODIyMTQzMF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNTk4OTU0OQ@@._V1_SY317_CR2,0,214,317_

The Attack – Heavy drama from Israel about a doctor who finds out his wife was responsible for a nasty suicide bombing. Convinced of her innocence, the doctor embarks on a journey to find out the truth. Hope he can handle the truth, whatever the truth might be.

MV5BNTkyNTkwMzkxMl5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMzAwOTE2OQ@@._V1_SX214_

Blackfish – Great documentary about a killer whale – we’ll call him Tilikum because that’s what he’s called – who, while in captivity and made to perform tricks for ungrateful humans, managed to kill several people. They did notice the world “killer” in his title, right?

MV5BMTc3NTMzNDY4NV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwMzQxNTkyMDE@._V1_SY317_CR6,0,214,317_

Broken – Great drama starring Tim Roth about a young girl who’s life changes when she witnesses a violent attack. And guess what? Tim Roth is not the violent attack guy. Must be getting old.

MV5BMTExODkwNTAzODBeQTJeQWpwZ15BbWU3MDAzNzE4OTk@._V1_SY317_CR2,0,214,317_

C.O.G. – Based on a short story by the amazeballs David Sedaris, a dude sets out to explore the world only to get stranded on an apple farm. Hilarity and an insight into the human psyche and maybe even apples, I presume, ensue.

MV5BMTk3Mjk5NjUxNF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMTk3OTA4OQ@@._V1_SX214_

Crystal Fairy and the Magical Cactus – Cool-looking road movie finds dickish Michael Cera teaming up with three Chilean brothers who go off in search of a cactus famous for it’s hallucinogenic properties. Along the way, hippie chick Crystal Fairy (with a name like that you have to be a hippie chick. Or a stripper), joins them in their adventure. This one looks like a good time. From the director of the amazing The Maid.

MV5BMTUyNjYwMTYwM15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNDA4NTc2OQ@@._V1_SX214_

Paranoia – Corporate espionage is the game here that finds Thor’s little brother caught between rival businesses headed by slick Gary Oldman and slickerer Harrison Ford. Thrills and paranoia, I presume, abound. Also on the Blu Ray.

MV5BMjAwODc5NzYzOF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNTk4MjEzOQ@@._V1_SX214_

Planes – It’s Cars, but in Plane form. Come on, Pixar, you’re getting kinda lame. Also on the Blu Ray.

MV5BMTYyMTkxOTk4MF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNjU3NTY1Mw@@._V1_SX214_

30 for 30 – Series 1 – Great series of sports documentaries. Wide range of subjects and even if you don’t like sports, even hockey, these are still great to watch.

MV5BODg4ODYxMTk2NV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNzYxMTI5OQ@@._V1_SX214_

The To Do List – The amazing Aubrey Plaza (great name!) stars as Brandy, a comely lass who wants to get “sexually educated” before she hits college. Hilarity and sexual hijinks abound in this raunchy comedy. Try to guess what’s on the list. Hopefully no Cleveland Steamers.

images

Treme Season 3 – More jazz, more drama, more gumbo (hopefully sans eyeballs) are here to please you.

MV5BNTQ5MTgzNDg4OF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMjAyODEzOQ@@._V1_SX214_

2 Guns – Marky Mark and Denzel star in this thriller where it seems each of them has a gun. And it also seems that they’ll need their 2 guns as some sort of drug bust goes sideways and these undercover lads have to go on the lam or something like that. Also on the Blu Ray.

MV5BMjA5Njc0NDUxNV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMjYzNzU1OQ@@._V1_SY317_CR0,0,214,317_

We’re the Millers – Drug comedy that finds funny-man Jason Sudeikas recruiting his ne’er-do-well neighbours to act as his family so he can smuggle some pot somewhere. Let the laughs begin! If anyone needs to borrow my family to run drugs somewhere, we can probably work something out. Also on the Blu-ray.

MV5BNzA1MTk1MzY0OV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNjkzNTUwMDE@._V1_SX214_

The World’s End – It sure has been a year for “end of the world” films. You’ve got your This is the End, World War Z, Pacific Rim, Grown-Ups 2 (that one is more of a signal of the impending apocalypse) and now this one. Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Bilbo Baggins and some other British drinking buddies attempt to re-create an epic pub crawl they almost did 20 years earlier. But what is lying in wait for them at the last stop of the night? Directed and written by Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead). Also on the Blu Ray.

Eight. 8. Ate. Funny word. Funny age. My kid just turned eight. Black Dog Commercial just turned eight. Both are moody, tempestuous little brats. Just kidding, I love them both as if they were my own. It’s been a fun, if not at times bumpy, ride (still talking about both sprog and store here, but enough about the kid). Made many friends and only a few enemies along the way. Hope to make many more. I’d like to say thanks to all of you lovely customers who’ve supported us over the years and continue to do so. We’re hoping we can stick around for a while yet (8 more years would be awesome but that seems somewhat unlikely in the times that we are a living in – but who knows?). In order to celebrate eight, may we offer to expunge your late charges? Can we do that for you? Here’s the deal – bring in non-perishable food item(s) between tomorrow (Wednesday) and the following Wednesday and we’ll destroy any outstanding late charges you might have accrued. Sweet deal, yes? In addition, come in this Saturday, the 16th, rent two or more DVDs or Blu Rays and we’ll give you one of our fabulous Black Dog tote bags. We’ll have some other swag to give away as well. Commercial location only. Hope to see you and some food soon!

Some things that you probably shouldn’t bring in…

MV5BMTU1NjAzMjc1M15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwOTk4NDY0OQ@@._V1_SY317_CR3,0,214,317_

A Band Called Death – Doc about a punk band nobody (well hardly anyone) ever heard of. Here’s their story.

michael-c-hall-jennifer-carpenter-3__oPt

Dexter: Final Season  – It’s finally over. I haven’t seen the last season – I gave up on Dexter many years ago – but I hear the ending is a crushing disappointment. Not Rob Ford level of disappointment (Zing! Hate to be Rob Ford right now!), but a disappointment none the less.

MV5BOTY0NDQ2NzQ2N15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMTU0OTkwOQ@@._V1_SX214_

Frances Ha – Noah Baumbach’s (Squid and the Whale) latest finds Greta Gerwig wandering around New York in black and white trying to figure things out. Good luck, Frances Ha!

MV5BMjIzMjE4NTY2Nl5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNTM1NTk4OQ@@._V1_SY317_CR0,0,214,317_

Grabbers – Some nasty, tentacled aliens have been decapitating and drinking the blood of local denizens of some small island. Their only weakness? Alcohol! They can’t eat anyone who’s drunk. So what’s the plan? Stay drunk! I think that I would do OK against these creatures. Me and most of my hockey team. Comedy + horror = a booze-soaked good time!

MV5BMTQwMTY0NDQxMV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwMjEwMTEwMDE@._V1_SX214_

Ip Man: The Final Fight – No Donnie Yen but it does have Anthony Wong as Ip Man, drawn into one last fight (hence the title) to defend his school and defeat some Triads. Good luck, Ip Man!

MV5BMTg4MjM2MjAxOF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMTAzOTEyOQ@@._V1_SX214_

Kevin Hart: Let me Explain – Stand-up comedy by a comedian I’ve never heard of. Better be funny, Mr. Hart.

MV5BMjI5OTYzNjI0Ml5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMzM1NDA1OQ@@._V1_SY317_CR1,0,214,317_

Man of Steel – Stuffy, pretentious, convoluted, humourless, too long, this Superman is a bit of a dud. Dude they found to play him is quite bland. Bland like Wonder Bread. Wonder Bread with margarine on it. But he has really big muscles. Why does Superman need to have such big muscles and have such crunchy abs? Hot mustard, he’s Superman, it doesn’t matter how big or small his muscles are! What would have happened if the baby Superman – Superbaby I guess, crashed in the wilds of Africa or in China? He’d stick out a little more I guess, being American looking and all. Many things to ponder. Watch at your own risk. Also on the Blu Ray.

MV5BMjA3MzczOTkyOV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNTg1NzI4OQ@@._V1_SY317_CR5,0,214,317_

Paradise: Faith – Second of three “Paradise” films from Germany’s Ulrich Seidl finds Anna Maria going from door to door in Austria with a big statue of the Virgin Mary trying to woo people back to the church. Then her husband, who’s been absent for years, shows up. Drama and hilarity, I presume, ensue. (May be late on the shelves)

MV5BNDY1OTIyNzI0NV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwODE1OTIzMDE@._V1_SX214_

Silk Season 1 – BBC drama about lawyers and barristers and the Queen’s Counsel and all the lawyering and barristering and Queen’s Counselling that they get up to.

MV5BMTA4NTgwMjM5MzheQTJeQWpwZ15BbWU3MDg2ODA1ODk@._V1_SX214_

Turbo – Animated kids thing about a snail or slug or squid or whatever that wants to race or go backpacking or learn karate or…I don’t know! Get off my back! Also on the Blu Ray.

MV5BNjY3NjU0OTM2OF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMDQ2MDE1OQ@@._V1_SX214_

The Wall – Strange, yet compelling sounding German film about a woman living out in the sticks somewhere when, for some reason, she’s cut off from the rest of the world by an invisible wall. Sometimes I wish I had this invisible wall at my beck and call. (May be a wee bit late hitting the shelves)

Black Dog Newsletter for Week Ending November 11th

So another Halloween has come and gone. It was a pretty good one – weather was nice, I managed to have a few drinks and watch Trick-r-Treat (one of my favourite Halloween films) and my kid managed to collect way too much candy which he came home, dumped on the couch and then promptly hugged. We let him eat as much as he wanted the next day in the hopes that he’d OD on it. Seemed to work. He got sick and vowed never to eat another piece of candy for the rest of his life. Or at least till later that evening.

We didn’t get as many trick-r-treaters at our house this year as previous years. There were only a few other houses decked out in festive Halloween gear on our street and I guess the kids had to weigh their options to hit streets with more action or lurch up our desolate avenue. Can’t blame them for not coming by. It’s also hard to compete when just a couple of streets over, there’s half a freakin’ pirate ship built out of someone’s house.

“Show off.”

Just a little reminder of our specials in case your brains made you forget: Mondays are 2 for 1 – anything and everything in the store, Wednesdays are 5 old films for $10, includes Blu Rays, Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday you can score 2 films, 1 new and 1 old or 2 old for 7 clams. Good times.

New Releases for Tuesday November 5th

MV5BMTQxNDE5MjczM15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwODY1NzI4OQ@@._V1_SX214_

As I Lay Dying – James Franco writes (from a William Faulkner novel), directs, stars and, I think, does the catering for this flick about a hick family going on a road trip to bury their dead mom. Despite Danny McBride being along for the ride, it’s not much of a comedy. Just look how all serious young James is.

MV5BMjE0NjE4NTQyMV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwOTQ3NzgwMDE@._V1_SY317_CR5,0,214,317_

Bounty Killer – In the future corporations and the sleaze bags who run them have ruined the planet (I assume it’s not too far off in the future) so a group of vigilantes hires a bunch of bounty killers (hence the title) to kill all the corporate scum. Man, I wish this was a documentary.

MV5BMTQyMzc3MzQxN15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwOTE5OTkwMDE@._V1_SX214_

Clear History – HBO flick starring the pretty pretty pretty great Larry David as a dude who has a petty argument with John Hamm and gives up his 10% of the shares in an electric car company. Of course the company then proceeds to make kazillions of dollars. Comedy hijinks, I presume, ensue. Also on the Blu Ray.

MV5BMTEyMDgyNDYwNjReQTJeQWpwZ15BbWU3MDc1MDQwNjk@._V1_SX214_

Girl Most Likely – Comedy that finds the adorable Kristin Wiig failing as a playwright and as a girlfriend so she moves back home with her crazy family. Much hilarity, I presume, ensues. Also on the Blu Ray (Late on the shelves)

MV5BMTgwNTI2MDI0OF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMTk5MDg0OQ@@._V1_SX214_

Grown Ups 2 – There has yet to be a machine invented than can measure my revulsion and repugnance to Adam Sandler and his cohorts who do nothing but spew out fetid shit into our eyeballs. Coming in with a stellar 7% on the Rotten Tomato-meter, this dreck still managed to pull in over $133 million. I guess there’s a lot of folks who like shit in their eyes.

hobbit_en_ovantad_resa_extended_edition_5_disc

The Hobbit: Extended Edition – Cash-grabber Peter Jackson brings you mawr Hobbits! Mawr Hobbits eating. Mawr Hobbits dancing and singing. Mawr Hobbits running around with sharp objects. Mawr Hobbits fucking. Wait, do they do that? Try to scrub that image out of your your brain. My apologies. Also on the Blu Ray.

MV5BMTQ5NDAwMTkxOF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMjU5MjMwOQ@@._V1_SX214_

Leviathan – Cool-looking doc that follows some fishermen as they fish for fish in the oceans. Not much dialogue, lots of haunting images and music liven up the fishy proceedings.

MV5BOTM0Mzc2MjgyN15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwOTIzNDQ4OQ@@._V1_SX214_

Lovelace – Star-studded bio-pic of Linda Lovelace features lovely bug-eyed Amanda Seyfried as the titular character as she becomes famous for her “starring” role in the first scripted, main-streamy porn flick, Deep Throat. I’m hoping that they go balls-to-the-walls sleazy on this but I think that it probably be quite tame. I still remember Deep Throat scarring my impressionable young brain way back when. Also on the Blu Ray.

MV5BMTYwOTEzNDU1N15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMDE2NTY0OQ@@._V1_SY317_CR12,0,214,317_

Magic City Season 2 – Cool as a cucumber TV show that follows a bunch of criminals in 1950’s Miami. This is the next season after Season 1.

MadMen_S6_DVD_f

Man Men Season 6 – Handsome men and women in suits drink whiskey, sleep around and make each other feel bad. You know the drill. Great show. Also on the Blu Ray. (May be late hitting the shelves)

MV5BMjMwOTg4NjQ0MV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMTkzMDg2OQ@@._V1_SX214_

Passion – Brian DePalma tires to prove he still has the sly, sleazy chops in this thriller that finds thespian-challenged Rachel McAdams scheming her way up the corporate ladder with her sights set on boss, Noomi Repace. Good sights, me thinks. I hope this one is good. Big DePalma fan over here. Also on the Blu Ray. (May be late hitting the shelves)

MV5BMTAyNzQyNTcwNjVeQTJeQWpwZ15BbWU3MDAwOTQ4Nzk@._V1_SY317_CR0,0,214,317_

White House Down – Wow, Hollywood must really hate the White House! Here’s the second film this year where terrorists attack it and and it falls to a handsome, chiseled young stud to save the President and the day. Channing Tatum is in the Gerald Butler role and Jamie Foxx is the president with much attitude! Bad attitude! Also on Blu Ray.

Black Dog Newsletter for Week Ending November 4th

It’s Halloween week. Finally. As you may know, I love Halloween. It’s my favourite time of year. I love the fall and this October has been exceptional. I love Halloween for the feeling of, not quite dread, but something mischievous in the air. iI find it odd and amusing how many people and businesses and what not embrace Halloween. I imagine if you were from another part of the world that doesn’t celebrate Halloween or if you were an alien who has travelled many light-years to observe and learn from our society, you might find it weird and a little unsettling to walk by houses or business that has severed limbs, dead rotting bodies, graves or whatever on display. I love it. What I don’t love – and I’m sure I’ve complained about this in the past and will again in the future is…read more…

Just a little note here – holders and users of the fabulous $35 punch cards; these cards are not valid with any other offer or promotion or sweet deals that Black Dog might have going on. For example you can’t use them on 2 for 1 Mondays. Just so y’all know.

And if you haven’t already got your underthings picked out for Halloween, Black Dog can help you out there as well (is there anything we can’t do?). We have lovely locally made artisan underwear for sale. $15 for the ladies and $25 for the dudes. They are awesome, trust me. I’m wearing a pair as we speak. Sorry, no photos of that.

New Releases for Tuesday October 29th

MV5BMTk2Nzc0NDQwMV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNjI2MjY3OQ@@._V1_SX214_

Byzantium – Neil Jordan tries his hand at the vampire film (actually this is his second stab in the vampire arena), because, well, there haven’t been enough vampire films lately. Still waiting for Woody Allen’s take on the genre. This one about a couple of young lady vampires who wreak havoc on an unsuspecting seaside community is fairly dull and pooches it at the end by betraying everything it built up throughout the film. Disappointing. Also on the Blu Ray…

MV5BMTk1MTExODU3Ml5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMjg0NDExOQ@@._V1_SY317_CR2,0,214,317_

Molly Maxwell – Canadian effort that finds introverted student Molly Maxwell (I think she’s the same Molly Maxwell that’s in the the title) falling for her hip, but disillusioned, English teacher. Complications and awkward situations, I presume, ensue.

MV5BMTM5OTYxNzE5N15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMDU1MTQ4OQ@@._V1_SX214_

R.I.P.D. – Heard nothing but bad things about this crappy Men in Black ripoff that finds personality-challenged Ryan Reynolds partnering up with a slumming Jeff Bridges as they chase after dead things or something like that. Probably should have been titled P.O.S. (Piece Of Shit). Also on the Blu Ray.

MV5BMTM4OTQ1MDMwOF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMDgwMjg2OQ@@._V1_SY317_CR5,0,214,317_

Saturday Morning Massacre – Fun-sounding horror comedy that finds some paranormal investigators who travel around in their beat-up van with their dog solving unexplained mysteries. Sound familiar at all? The box says its a cross between Scooby-Doo and Evil Dead. Ruh-roh!

MV5BMTcwMjY5MzU5Ml5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNjc4MzU5Ng@@._V1_SY317_CR12,0,214,317_

Territories – Going on a road trip to the States soon? You might change your mind after watching this nice little story of five friends who get accosted by some mean shitty border guards and tortured into giving confessions to being terrorists or smugglers or Democrats.

MV5BMTUyODgwMDU3M15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwOTM4MjcxOQ@@._V1_SX214_

Monsters University – Pretty OK sequel/prequel to a film called Monsters Inc. finds the big hairy blue monster and the one with the big lone eyeball becoming friends in school. A fine time-waster for you and your sprogs. Also on the Blu Ray.

Sticking with the theme for the month, ever wonder what a horror film directed by Wes Anderson might look like? Ed Norton does a killer Owen Wilson I must say.

Big shout out of thanks and what-nots to everyone who stopped in at the stores on Saturday to support International Independent Video Store Day. We gave out a couple of Blu Ray players, some lovely tote bags and much love. It raises one’s spirit to know that there are still lots of folks who appreciate us in their neighbourhood and their lives and that there’s still life left in this old business. Cheers to you all!

There’s a Halloween thingy a transpiring this Saturday in the Cambie hood. There will be candy given out, pumpkin carvings, crafts – everyone loves crafts! – balloons – you’d have to have a pretty cold heart not to love a good balloon – merriment and possibly a monkey knife-fight or two, we’re still trying to iron out the details on that one. Dress up the kids, the dog, the neighbours kid (but don’t do nothing illegal please) or the neighbour’s dog and drop on by the store and the hood for much fun.

New Releases for Tuesday October 22nd

MV5BMTM2ODA4MzE3N15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwODE2NjA0OQ_._V1_SY317_CR0_0_214_317_

Augustine – In 19th century France, a lovely kitchen maid (the best kind if maid) suffers some sort of seizure, gets sent off to institution, falls under the influence of, maybe, a creepy doctor. Complications ensue. On the shelves at Cambie, soon at Commercial.

MV5BMjA5NzgxODE2NF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNTI1NTI0OQ_._V1_SX214_

Before Midnight – Latest (probably last) of the “Before a Time of Day” films from Linklater finds Ethan and Julie talking and eating and talking and then talking some more. Expect to see this one on many “Best of the Year” lists in the coming months. I’m still expecting at least one more of these films to be made – maybe when they get older. Before Nap-time, Before Dentures, Before Wheel of Fortune…Also on the Blu Ray. (We were shorted our order at Cambie and I am desperately trying to get more DVDS)

MV5BMTM3NjA1NDMyMV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMDQzNDMzOQ_._V1_SX214_

The Conjuring – Not bad, not great horror flick finds a couple investigating another couple who claim their house is haunted. Turns out it was. Could have been much better if they stuck with the haunted house story instead of veering off on the direction it did. Although I never understand why folks just don’t leave their haunted abode. I guess that would make for a much more boring film. “Conjure this!!” Is what I say. Also on the Blu Ray.

Dirty Wars – Important looking doc that investigates the world of the “War on Terror” (which if you really think of it, makes no sense – a war on an emotion or state of mind? Bullshit I says), and the secret armies that conduct “operations” as they like to refer to as what they do. Others may call it murder, torture and just being jerks. Looks pretty intense.

A Hijacking – Danish thriller about a ship overtaken by Somali pirates. Does not, I repeat, does not star Tom Hanks. Looks pretty good though, even without Tom Hanks.

I Give it a Year – Couple meets, falls in love, yadda, yadda. None of their friends, acquaintances, neighbours or the neighbours dog think that they will last. Hence the title. Romantic comedy junkies, alert!

The Internship – Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn are “old school salesmen” who try to get into the Internship (title alert!) program at Google. Hijinks, I presume, ensue. The little description, which you may need glasses to read, on the box exclaims, “Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson team up to crash the digital world in this laugh-out-loud comedy you’ve been searching for!” Does that sentence even make sense? Who writes this shit. Maybe I should look into box writing after the video store? From what I hear this movie is basically an extended Google commercial. Like they need to advertise. The word Google is already a noun, a verb and a salad dressing. Also on the Blu Ray.

Only God Forgives – Dude who made Drive is back along with The Gosling to assault your senses in this critically panned thriller set in the seedy underbelly of Bangkok. Love me some seedy underbelly. Looks pretty cool and psychedelic to me, even if it was soundly booed at Cannes. Maybe they were chanting Boo-urns. Also on the Blu Ray.

The Way Way Back – Excellent coming-of-age comedy that finds a 14 year-old dude getting dragged along on a family vacation to a water park where he hangs out with Sam Rockwell who doles out life lessons. Wish I had a Sam Rockwell doling me out life lessons when I was 14. Then I might have ended up asking Kim W. to go steady with me instead of chickening out like a big milk-fed wussy-baby. A life full of regrets. Sigh. Also on the Blu Ray

Kon-Tiki – Oscar-winning doc from 1947 finds crazy person Thor Heyerdahl making a raft and sailing it almost 5,000 miles across the Pacific Ocean. The recently released film version is worth a look as well.
