Black Dog Newsletter for Week Ending August 6th

So I guess the first thing I should do is apologize. I wasn’t even going to put together this edition of the newsletter on account of the insanely poor releases for this week. That’s not to say that the films are of sub-par quality, it’s just that there is hardly anything new hitting the shelves this week. In fact we received more older titles for the stores than we did newer stuff. I’m not too sure why the studios did this to us. Maybe it has something to do with the Olympics. Maybe they’re dicks. So my apologies for the lack of new stuff. Anyways, the month of August has a lot of films and a lot of great films that will be made available for your wanting eyeballs. So maybe it’s time to delve into some older stuff, start some quality TV fare, check out some great documentaries or go to the beach.

On another note it seems that our poor old Black Dog sandwich board at the Cambie location is too damaged to continue and will have to be put down. We had a good run together, shared some good times as well as some bad. It was a very nice dog that lived a good, fulfilling life being chained up to the store everyday, all day long. It never complained, no matter what the weather, what little kids did to it and even after it’s feet were destroyed and it couldn’t stand up anymore. So to you good readers, I offer a challenge. If anyone would care to make me another lovely sandwich board in the style of what we had before, or something completely new and astounding, I’d love to trade your time, labour and what-not for free rentals. If you are interested send me your ideas and we can start from there.

New Releases for Tuesday July 31st

Cherry Bomb – A nice rape/revenge exploitation type film for your summertime enjoyment about a stripper with a heart of gold (of course, is there any other kind?) who looks to take revenge on some scumbags who did her wrong.

Flamenco Flamenco – A film so nice they named it twice. This is a doc about, well, flamenco. I used to go to the Kino Cafe across the street from the Cambie store. I even witnessed a few flamenco nights – it was pretty cool, all the stomping and clapping and hey-hey. But after a couple of visits, coupled with the fact it’s on almost every night, I haven’t been back much. Maybe it also has to do with the fact I live over in the Commercial Drive hood. Maybe it has to do with the fact that I don’t really like flamenco. Even just writing about it is giving me a slight headache.

Freddy Frogface – Animated Danish kids fare finds someone (I presume it’s a frog, or a kid with a face like a frog) named Victor who, together with his friends, try to outsmart the town bully and win a talent contest. Also known as Orla Frøsnapper to all you Danes out there.

Hatfields and the McCoys – TV miniseries about a couple of asshole families that almost started a state vs state civil war with their bickering, and blood feuds and hog ownership claims and pie throwing and name calling and murderous antics. Actually supposed to be quite an excellent show. Stars the Kevin Costner and the Bill Pullman or the Bill Paxton. Not too sure. Filmed in Romania for some reason.

The Hunter – Not starring Willam Dafoe. Iranian film about a guy who kills a couple of cops (I presume they had it coming) and then flees into the woods pursued by a couple more cops. Word on the street has it that this is an excellent, tense, atmospheric, philosophical thriller. Sorry, I couldn’t find an English trailer so here’s a trailer for Troll Hunter which has nothing to do with this film. I just like it.

Black Dog Newsletter for Week Ending July 30th

Due to unforeseen circumstances today’s films will not be on the shelves when we open. Apparently Purolator “shit the bed”, as my distributor described (I personally don’t care too much for this expression – I prefer “screwed the pooch” or “ignited the baby”), this weekend getting our films to us. Word has it also that there was some sort of avalanche or Yeti attack near Banff (my films have to come all the way from Calgary every week – how’s that for efficiency for ya, close the office in Vancouver and ship everything across western Canada from Calgary) which also added to the delay. I have been informed that they will be delivered to the stores sometime today and we’ll get them on the shelves as soon as we can. Personally I think this is what happened…

New Releases (that we don’t have yet) for Tuesday July 24th

Detachment – Adrian Brody (remember him? if not watch this…) stars as a substitute teacher who drifts from school to school until he meets some people that finally give him some sort of connection and grounding. Kind of maybe some sort of Dead Poets Society but with Adrian Brody. Remember him? Word has it that this is a very good, if not heavy, film. Also on the Blu Ray.

Footnote – Highly acclaimed flick about a great rivalry between a father and son, both eccentric professors in the Talmud department of Hebrew University in Jerusalem. I wonder one day if my son will rise to become a great rival of mine when he opens his first video store? Yes I believe that there will still be video stores in 20 years. No comments, please.

Intruders – Sccaaarryyy sounding ghost story of sorts finds old Clive Owen trying to defend his daughter against something called Hollowface as it tries to take her soul or her doll collection or something. Might have potential, might not. Also on the Blu Ray.

Jiro Dreams of Sushi – Doc about an old sushi chef in Tokyo and his son who faces the pressure of following in his famous dad’s footsteps. Sounds kinda like the film Footnote, just replace Talmud department of Hebrew University in Jerusalem with sushi.

Keyhole – Latest from awesome Canadian weirdo Guy Maddin finds Jason Patric as gangster and deadbeat dad, Ulysses Pick, embarking on an unusual journey through his home. Sounds, well, weird. Expect lots of unusual weirdness and odd shenanigans afoot. It is a Guy Maddin film after all. Also stars the amazingly wonderful Isabella Rossellini and Udo Kier. Love me some Udo!

Meeting Evil – Strange sounding surreal thriller finds down-on-his luck Luke Wilson taking some, maybe, not-so-good advice from a gun wielding Samuel L. Jackson. Sam Jackson with a gun and an attitude is never a bad thing. In the movies that is.

Salmon Fishing in Yemen – Yummy Ewan McGregor (My wife and Louis CK love this guy – check out this clip of Louis CK talking about Ewan – NSFW – ) plays a fishing expert who’s recruited to bring fly fishing to the desert country of Yemen for some reason. Despite the fact it’s directed by Lasse Halstrom, word has it that this piece is quite nice and enjoyable. Also on the Blu Ray.

Treasure Island – A hairless (at least on his head anyways) Eddie Izzard stars in this most recent updating of the classic tale. At least I think that this is the version we’re getting. Not to sure as it hasn’t arrived as of yet.

That’s it till next time folks, have a great week. Thinking of the horror show that was the stupid massacre at the theatre in Aurora last week, here’s an interesting thing regarding how idiotic the US of A is about their love of firearms. Amazing how nobody even tries to talk about or do anything about this insane “need” to own ridiculously powerful weapons. I don’t get it.

Black Dog Newsletter for Week Ending July 23rd

You know, as much as I like to bitch about Vancouver and all the dolts and wankers that make life trying here, it really is a special town. I spent a portion of the afternoon down at Third Beach today. It’s my favorite beach in the city – we have beaches in the city! – and it was a lovely way to spend the afternoon. I had a couple of beers and what not, went for a swim (water is pretty freakin’ cold) and just chilled. It was relatively quiet and beautiful and relaxing, besides the odd seaplane and inane conversation going on around me. It was a nice change from the incessant traffic, car alarms, crazy people in the park, and general din of city life. I’m now sitting in my backyard having yet another beer. This is good. If you can swing it, get to a beach or a park or whatever makes you happy in this busy, noisy city. It will save your life. That and watching good movies. Don’t forget the beer.

New Releases for Tuesday July 17th

Black Butterflies – Bio-pic of famed South African poet Ingrid Jonker who plied her craft during Apartheid’s nasty rein. Supposed to be pretty good for those of you who are into such stuff. Even has the Hobo with a Shotgun, Rutger Hauer, so it has that going for it.

Casa De Mi Padre – Pretty odd Will Farrell comedy, spoken entirely in Spanish, about a “filthy rancher” who wants to save his family from the encroaching drug trade spreading across Mexico. Sometimes funny, a lot of times not, this weird little ditty plays like a cheap Mexican soap kinda thing – lots of fake backgrounds, terrible props, suspect editing and music and acting. Made me laugh about a half dozen times which is Ok I guess. Runs about 80 minutes or so which is just long enough. It’s almost like they were afraid to go balls out on this. Too much restraint, not enough guts. Also on the Blu Ray. (We didn’t receive most of the copies we ordered for Cambie – hopefully they’ll be there soon)

Clean Bin Project – In our increasingly wasteful society comes this documentary that finds partners Jen and Grant going head to head in a comedic battle to see who can swear off consumerism and produce the least amount of garbage in an entire year. Be an interesting study. I’m always so annoyed and amazed at how much shit we produce and consume. The overuse of plastics, packaging and all kinds crap that we don’t need is so depressing. Makes me so angry being in line at the grocery store and seeing people putting stuff like bananas or a couple of oranges or whatever in a bag to take it to the check-out only to have them put in another bag. What is the point of this? Are these people not even thinking about what they are doing. Or do they even care? Always bring a bag to the store with you. And avoid small bottles of water. Huge landfill problem. And disposable diapers. And pop cans. I could go on. (Sorry for the lecture – had to get that off my chest).

Friends with Kids – Fine cast – Adam Scott, Kristen Wiig, John Hamm (Mmm Hamm), Maya Rudolph etc. star in this romantic comedy about two best friends who decide to have a sprog together but try to keep their relationship platonic because, for some reason, they think having a kid will destroy the romantic portion of the relationship. Geez, I wonder if everything doesn’t go as planned and they end up all happy like in the end? Kids don’t rule you, you rule the fucking kids. What? Who said that?

Johnny Carson: King of Late Night – Sis-boom-bah! If you remember that joke from Carson’s Swami routine, good on ya. I was a big fan of Johnny Carson growing up and I hear that this doc about the man is pretty outstanding. It’s the sound of a sheep exploding by the way.

Get the Gringo – Mad Mel returns to his smarmy actiony tough guy roles in this very fun and entertaining Mexican prison dealy. Mel finds himself behind bars in the strangest, most interesting prison I’ve seen on screen in ages (apparently it’s based on real Mexican prisons). There he befriends a mom and her son (yes you read that right) as they try to survive in the crazy world behind those walls. I was surprised how good this was, the first 40 mintues or so are fantastic, considering it’s basically a straight to DVD flick. I guess Mel’s “problems” precede him – for good reason – which makes it tough these days to find an audience. If he’d just keep his foul mouth shut and make films like this maybe people might like the doofus. Also on the Blu Ray.

Lockout – Kind of an Escape from New York in space minus the awesomeness of John Carpenter and Kurt Russell. Guy Pearce is offered a chance of freedom if he can rescue the President’s daughter from a maximum security prison on the moon or somewhere in space. I wonder if that is what Newt Gingrich had in mind with his living-on-a-moon-base idiocy? Also on the Blu Ray.

Matter of Taste: Serving Up Paul Liebrandt – Another foodie doc about some young whipper-snapper chef in New York who makes crazy shit like “eel, violets and chocolate” and “espuma of calf brains and foie gras” and “perfumed snails served in a lady’s hat” and “scorched duck knees with creamed neck of platypus” (I made the last two up).

Midnight Son – Horrorish dealy about a guy with a rare skin condition who can’t be exposed to the daylight and who also finds that,as his condition worsens, he finds the need to drink human blood. Why can’t they just tell us that he’s a fucking vampire? Supposed to be a real good little number though.

Mutantes: Punk Porn Feminism- Documentary exploring the pro-sex movement over the past three decades through interviews with activists, sex workers and performers alongside archive footage of actions and excerpts from feminist pornography. Yay, pro-sex! From the director of Baise-Moi.

Silent House – “Real Time” horror thriller – seems like it’s all done in one take – about a woman, Elizabeth Olsen, (she the Olsen sister with the talent) who finds herself and her dad under attack by some ghosts or goblins or Sasquatch or deranged spirits of some sort. Supposed to be a pretty good little horror thriller. Also on the Blu Ray.

The Three Stooges – Because the world needed more stooges. Thanks Farrelly Brothers. This was supposed to star Russell Crowe and Jim Carrey and someone else, (Sir Ian McKellan? Robert DeNiro?) That I would have watched. Also on the Blu Ray.

Black Dog Newsletter for Week Ending July 16th

What a difference seven days makes. This time a week ago it was cold, raining and bleak. I think the heat in our house even went on. Fast forward…it is hot and was hot yesterday and will be hot again tomorrow. I was even sweating when I went to bed last night (it was from the heat, perverts). And with the nice weather comes the looming spectre of camping (I hope my wife isn’t reading this). The dreaded “C” word. I’m not the biggest fan of stuffing everything you have in your house into your car, trying to find a place to camp, sleeping in the dirt, being swarmed blood-sucking bugs while huge skunks, vicious badgers and poison monkeys prowl and crash around your tent in the middle of the night. I’m turing 47 this week (!) and the allure of this so-called fun outdoor adventure seems to diminish with every passing year. Gimme a cabin with a hot tub, a view, a fire pit and a DVD player anytime. And I don’t even care that much about the view.

New Releases for Tuesday July 10th

American Reunion – I don’t remember anyone asking for another American Pie film, do you? Actually from what I hear this is one of the best in the series (I think that there’s 11 in total) and has the original cast back – for whatever that’s worth. Also on the Blu Ray. Red Band Trailer –

Being Flynn – You know, people work hard to make a film – from the writing to the actual making of the film and on into post production. So why then after all the money and effort spent do they saddle a film with such a lame fucking title? Being Flynn. It makes me not to want to watch it just based on the stupid lazy name. That said, this drama starring Bobby DeNiro (when was the last time he was in anything worthwhile?) and Paul Dano is, from what I’ve read, a pretty good drama about a guy and his estranged dad.

Bullhead – An intense cattle farmer (yes you read that right), constantly pumped on steroids and hormones (probably the cause of his intense cattle famernish), initiates a shady deal with a notorious mafioso meat trader (yes you are still reading this correctly). I’ve heard excellent things about this flick. Very high on my list of films to check out. Was nominated for an Oscar in the best foreign film category. Also on the Bull-Ray. (Get it?)

Comic-Con: Episode IV: A Fan’s Hope – The sometimes grating Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me) returns with this doc about all the nerds, geeks and dweebs who attend the huge Comic-con fest in San Diego every year. I believe it is going on as you read this. Ask a nerd, they’ll know. Also on the Blu-Ray

Fatso – Norwegian sex comedy about a virginal, agoraphobic porn addict who still lives with his father at age 30 – and whose only friend is a hateful, asthmatic loser. What happens when the guy’s dad rents out a room to a beautiful free-spirited sexually uninhibited young woman? Hmmmm….

Margaret – The long in gestation film from the guy who made the fantastic You Can Count on Me from a few years back finds Sookie from True Blood witnessing a bus accident that she may have inadvertently caused and all the aftermath that it spawns. Supposed to quite a fine work of art. Here’s an interesting article about the film and it’s troubled history – http://blogs.suntimes.com/scanners/2012/07/margaret_the_masterpiece_that_.html
and the trailer -

Pina 3-D – A school of prehistoric blood-thirsty fish escape into a lake to terrorize and eat…wait, that’s Piranha 3-D. This one is an exquisite doc about famed ballet instructor and choreographer Pina Bauch (not too sure if she was very blood-thirsty). If you have a 3-D TV this is supposed to be simply amazing (yes we have the 3-D Blu Ray and regular Blu-Ray as well).

Wallander – Original awesome detective series from Sweden that the fine series with Kenneth Branagh was based on. Good stuff!

Skidoo – Check out the insane cast for this one! –

Black Dog Newsletter for Week Ending July 9th

I’m going to try to push through with this week’s newsletter despite only getting about 3 hours sleep last night. We had some friends over for dinner and a few drinks (probably a few too many – go figure) and I guess the combination of some rich meaty foods and rich meaty wines and ales (we sampled out first batch of home brew) resulted in some wicked indigestion that reared it’s ugly head about 2:20 in the am and I wasn’t able to get back to sleep after that. I will try to make this edition as entertaining, informative and hilarious as I can, but there are no promises.

New Releases for Tuesday July 3rd

God Bless America – Great funny satire from Bobcat Goldthwait (or is that Goldcat Bobthwait?) that takes aim (get it?!) at American culture as it is today – “America has become a cruel and vicious place. We reward the shallowest, the dumbest, the meanest and the loudest.” says Frank, played by Bill Murray’s younger brother. So what’s a guy with no job and a giant brain tumor to do? Team up with a crazy teenager and rid America of it’s problems, one idiot at a time. I must say I loved this movie, sure some of the targets are pretty easy – Kardashians, Fox News, those assholes who picket funerals of soldiers and suicides and such – but it’s still a lot of bloody, violent fun to watch. Man, I wouldn’t want to be Diablo Cody. Highly recommended to those who like this kind of thing. Think Falling Down or Idiocracy, but better and more violent. Also on the Blu Ray. Red Band Trailer –

Hit so Hard – Documentary that follows Hole drummer Patty Schemel as she struggles with fame and addiction. Yes, it would be tough having to deal with Courtney Love on a regular basis. Good luck, Patty Schemel.

The Hunter – The always watchable Willam Dafoe (I’d love a Willam Dafoe mask for halloween!) stars as a mercenary who is sent by a mysterious biotech company to the Tasmanian wilderness on a hunt for the last Tasmanian tiger. But is there more than meets the eye to this adventure. Me thinks that there is. Looks like a pretty cool little number. Also on the Blu Ray.

Jesus Henry Christ – Fine sounding little indie number starring Toni Collette and Michael Sheen about a kid, born (but probably not raised) in a petrie dish, who embarks on a journey to find his biological father. Many quirky hijinks, I presume, ensue.

Joe and Belle – Israeli Thelma and Louise type lesbian adventure finds Joe, a frustrated drug dealer and Belle, a French psychopath (they’re by far the worst kind ), on the run after some kind of murder.

Seeking Justice – After his wife is assaulted, a husband enlists the services of a vigilante group to help him settle the score. Then he discovers they want a ‘favor’ from him in return. Oh la-la. Seems that Nic Cage is slowly (or quickly) becoming king of the “straight to DVD flicks”. And it’s no wonder with such a lame, boring title. Like really, is that the best they could come up with? It’s almost like they punched a formula into a computer and it spat out Seeking Justice. It could have been called anything; Making Sandwiches, Washing the Cat, Feeding Mouth, Jumping High, Trimming Back Hair, Developing Film, Hungry Rabbit…you get the picture. Also on the Blu Ray.

Some Guy Who Kills People – Now there’s a title for ya! Kevin Corrigan stars as a lonely fella, fresh out of the loony bin, who sets out to kill those he deems responsible for his miserable life. Oh, if only life were like in the movies. Make a good double bill with God Bless America.

Thin Ice – Good pedigree on this one – from the director of Thirteen Conversations About One Thing and Clockwatchers, stars Alan Arkin, Greg Kinnear and Billy Crudup. So how come I’ve never heard of it? Sounds interesting enough – insurance agent looking for a way out of frigid Wisconsin is blackmailed by an unstable locksmith in the theft of a rare violin that belongs to a retired farmer. Maybe a bit Fargo but that was a good flick so it has that going for it. Gonna have to give it a spin and see what’s what. Blu Ray only – DVD on the shelves soon.
