Black Dog Video Newsletter for Week Ending December 17th

If you’re like me, and I know that you are, you are very much looking forward to Christmas. For it to be over, that is. Try as I might (and I really want to be “into Christmas” if for no other reason than for my 7 year-old) I just can’t muster up any “feelings” for this wretched time of year. We went out the other day, killed a tree, dragged it home and then decorated to make it look as if a drag queen exploded all over it. What a strange tradition this is. And of course it fell over (6 years in a row the tree has fallen over, might be time for a new stand) breaking 3 bulbs, scattering classic holiday ornaments such as a soccer and baseball, gold elephants, a businessman holding a briefcase and a moose kissing a penguin all over the floor along with a cup and a half of water and about 1239 pine needles. Usually I blame the cat for everything that goes wrong in the house but this time I believe there was a flaw in my design and execution in the tree-putting up plan. I do admit though that the gaudy dying tree in the corner of the living room is my favorite part of Christmas. Besides the tree, there’s not much to like for me; I’m not a religious fella and the weather is cold and gloomy (gimme some snow!), everyone seems to be angrily rushing around buying stuff, the incessant drone of horrible Christmas music everywhere insidiously working it’s way into your brain (really, Alvin and the fucking Chipmunks, nobody should ever have to hear that!), the relentless ads everywhere for stuff nobody wants or needs (lots of ugly toys, crappy chocolates, chia pets and car commercials – who gives cars to each other for Christmas?!), the stress of having to spend time with family, relatives or friends that you don’t really want to spend time with (I’m not talking about you, Mom), and the ridiculous length of the damn season – does it really have to go from the beginning of November (I saw Christmas decorations and crap for sale two days before Halloween!) all the way to the end of the year? Maybe when we get a little closer to the actual date I may change my tune (drinks, food and a good film should help) but until then I’m just going to walk with my head down and try to stay home as much as possible. But don’t let my downer diatribe stop you from enjoying this festive season!

Don’t do it, Santa!

To make your Christmas viewing season that much more merrier, starting Wednesday you can rent all of our Christmas movies for a mere $3.00! The catch? You can only have them for 2 days. (And no, Die Hard and Gremlins are not considered Xmas films) Party on. Next week we’ll impress you with some recommendations for festive holiday films. Festive in our opinion that is. Heh-heh.

New Releases for Tuesday December 11th

Alps – New flick from the director of the deranged Dogtooth! This one sounds pretty bizarre and interesting – four people form a little secret society where they set out to ease the suffering of people who have just lost a loved one. Their solution? For a fee they will act the part of the dead person that is being grieved. They will learn their hobbies and mannerisms and so forth. I can’t say as that sounds like a good idea to me. But one that might make for a fine evening of Greek weirdness. Enjoy.

Booker’s Place: A Mississippi Story – Interesting sounding doc about a filmmaker who made a doc in the 60’s about race relations in the southern US (hint – they were’t all that good) and in particular one black dude who worked at an all-white diner. The doc changed his life forever. As one can imagine.

Bourne Legacy – Jeremy Renner tires to fill the big shoes left by large-footed Matt Damon (MATT DAMON!) and keep this franchise going. Not too sure what the plot is, as if it mattered, but from what I can make out it’s about an undercover operative who needs drugs to make him real strong and fast and he’ll stop and nothing and kill everyone in the room to get them. Sounds like a documentary about Lance Armstrong. Zing! Also on the Blu Ray.

Exit Humanity – Civil war zombie apocalypse film to warm those heart cockles this Christmas.

Girls Season 1 – Much ballyhooed HBO series about four women doing the life thing – you know the assorted humiliations, disasters and rare triumphs that everyone goes through. Good stuff. Think Sex and the City but not at all like that show.

Ice Age: Incontinental Drift – More animated fare starring a hairy elephant, a tiger with enormous teeth and some gopher-looking rat thing. Also on the Blu Ray.

Ted – Fair to middling comedy starring Marky Mark and his best friend Ted, a foul-mouthed stuffed teddy bear. It started out quite funny and had a few inspired moments – the fight between Marky Mark and Ted had me in stitches (and for this I give it a barely passing grade) but then it just meanders from one rom-com cliche to the next throughout it’s almost 2 hour running time. As a rule (my rule) comedies should never be more than an hour and a half. Why do these type of romantic comedy films always resort to the tired formula of boy loves girl, boy loses girl because he’s too immature, boy gets girl back, boy loses ill-tempered stuffed bear, boy gets potty-mouthed bear back from crazy guy? There’s some good stuff here – I give it a 6/10 but there’s also a lot of lame crap – really, are they actually still making gay jokes? My wife gave it a 1 and 1/2 out of 10. Not too sure what the extra 1/2 was for. Also on the Blu Ray. Red Band trailer –

V/H/S – Another (yawn) found footage horror flick. This one is a bit of anthology dealy with some kids finding an old VHS tape (a what?!) that has five nasty stories on it. I imagine that I’ll give it a look see sometime soon but really, can we retire the found footage genre for a while? Especially in the horror field which is a field that I like to frolic in. Also on the Blu Ray. Red Band Trailer – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LfLDeXLmAw

Weekdays

Me: “Feels like a Sunday today.” Gus: “It is Sunday.” Me: “No, it’s Monday”. Gus: “Oh, well it feels like a Wednesday to me”.”

Roofy

Walking home from school we pass a guy on a ladder with a hose cleaning his roof. Gus shouts at him with a little bit of snarky sarcasm in his voice: “Hey! Good luck cleaning your roof!””

Legoless

“Playing The Lego Lord of the Rings video game, Gus says, “why is his name Legolas? Is it because he doesn’t have any Lego?””

Santa Calling

I was on the phone talking to Gus pretending to be Santa (Claus). As he was telling me his list he pauses and says to Santa, “You gettin’ this down?”

Black Dog Newsletter for Week Ending December 3rd

So last week I wrote about the dreadful weather we were having and the negative effect said weather might have on one’s psyche. I guess this raised a bit of an alarm with some of my faithful readers. So much so a couple of you wrote me to express your concerns for my well-being. That was very nice and thoughtful. This is my favorite sentence from an email (and maybe one of the best thoughts that have ever been conveyed to me) I received regarding the state of my being – “I’m writing with concern for your brains nueroplasticity and cognitive function.” Love it! Rest assured I am totally fine and have not been entertaining any thoughts other than skipping through a field of daises in the sunshine only stopping to pet a cat or give out free hugs to anyone who wants one. Sometimes I just get on a bit of a rant and and I must go with it until it reaches it’s logical or illogical conclusion. Or until I fight a hobo. Sorry if I caused anyone any undue distress. All is well in the kingdom.

This is what the inside of my brain looks like. Happy happy!

New Releases for Tuesday November 27th

The Apparition – Lame looking horror number about some sort of evil ghost type thing ( I think I wrote a piece a while back wondering why ghosts in horror films are always assholes – knocking shit over, turning the lights off, making blood come out of the walls, decapitating people) who haunts a couple after being accidentally conjured during a university parapsychology experiment. Accidentally?” Whoops! How did that happen? Sorry about accidentally conjuring up a nasty spirit and unleashing it in your home. Gotta go now, good luck!”

Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide – Based on the book of the same name, this doc follows the authors and a bunch of famous woman advocates including America Ferrera, Diane Lane, Eva Mendes, Meg Ryan, Gabrielle Union, and Olivia Wilde to ten countries: Cambodia, Kenya, India, Sierra Leone,Somaliland, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Liberia and the U.S. There they focus on women fighting against horrific realities such as sex trafficking, forced prostitution, maternal mortality, and gender-based violence that plague their homelands. Go women!

Lawless – Tough looking “western” type deal about bootlegging and Johnny Law stepping in to try to end all this bootlegging. I love the word bootlegging. It’s just fun to say. Say it! I find it amusing and strange that there’s a place called “Leg and Boot Square” down off the seawall. Who named that place? Stars the bad guy from Batman and that Shia “The Beef” knob. Written by Nick Cave, so it has that going for it. Also on the Blu Ray. Might be late hitting the shelves. Red Band Trailer –

Men in Black III – Will Smith has to go back in time to save Tommy Lee Jones from being taken out by one of the Flight of the Conchords dudes who’s an nasty alien. Josh Brolin plays a young TLJ and just nails him to perfection. I mostly enjoyed this installment – much better than the abysmal MIB 2 – but my main complaint was too much Will Smith (he’s not much of an actor, he just walks around saying things, and he’s a knob IMHO – http://ow.ly/fAKo5) and not enough TLJ – he’s basically in it at the beginning and the end. Worth a view for a brainless night’s entertainment. Also on the Blu Ray.

Paranorman – Most excellent (from what I hear) stop-motion animated number that finds a guy who can chat with ghosts (maybe he can ask them why most ghosts are knobs) who has to save his town from the undead and other assorted ghouls and nasty beings. Can’t wait to terrify my kid with this film. Also on the Blu Ray.

Sparkle – Another one of those “young singers become famous and then find that they can’t handle fame and all that comes with it and then they fight, break up and probably die in some depressing way” type film. Stars Whitney Houston, presumably when she was still alive.

Step Up: Revolution – Dance, motherf*^#er, dance!

Black Dog Newsletter for Week Ending November 19th

Well I was going to comment on the US election and how that country seems to be progressing in the right direction and how it seems the opposite up here what with our slimy evil government taking us down a dark path and all, but then another story caught my eye…This dude who won the lottery in Terrace. He’s a pot activist (his last name is even Erb!) and by all accounts a good guy. He was on his way to his father’s funeral when he bought the winning ticket. What struck me was what he said he was going to do with a chunk of his dough; donate to homeless shelters, the food bank, family, friends and to furthering the fight for the decriminalization and legalization of marijuana. Good on ya, Mr. Erb. I got me to thinking about all of those terrible lotto commercials where a bunch of horribly selfish douches win the lottery and how do they spend their winnings? They chase each other around in helicopters and speed boats, they have breakfast on top of a fucking mountain! Just once I’d like to see a lotto commercial where someone says their going to something good and unselfish with their winnings. Well that’s my Monday morning rant. Please carry on..

Speaking of the food bank, we are extending our food for late charges at the Commercial location until this Wednesday. The response has been entirely underwhelming and disappointing. So please, if you can, bring in a wheelbarrow full of food (doesn’t have to be a wheelbarrow) to the Commercial store and we’ll destroy all of your late charges right before your very eyes.

Also just another reminder that the Commercial store will be closing early – 8pm – this Thursday (the 15th) for a private function. So get in early and often to stock up for the night.

New Releases for Tuesday November 13th

2 Days in New York – Julie Delpy expands on her 2 Days in Paris with, well, 2 Days in NY. She directs and stars with Chris Rock in this comedy/drama or drama/comedy – you choose – about a couple, each with children from a previous relationship, who live in NY and talk about things and walk around and stuff. Heard good things.

Brave – Animated Disney fare (limited copies available because, well, Disney are dicks) about a arrow wielding girl who fights a bear for some reason and fights to restore order to her kingdom or something like that. Also on the Blu Ray.

Elles – Sexy sex number that has investigative journalist Juliette Binoche immersing herself in a prostitution ring run by some university students. With plot keywords such as Female Masturbation, Wine, Women Dancing Together, Oral Sex, Male Masturbation, Female Nudity, Vodka, Bare Breasts and Golden Shower, this is probably not a good film to watch with your parents. Probably also wouldn’t make a good double bill with Brave. Or maybe it would.

Heathens and Thieves – Western that finds a couple of heathens out to steal gold (they’re thieves as well) from a Chinese immigrant. I’ve heard that it’s better than this lame description makes it sound. For those of you who like yer westerns. Has the bonus of starring Don Swayze!

Liverpool – Festival fave finds a coat-check girl trying to return a coat left at the coat-check to the guy who coat-checked it. Criminal intrigue and love interests to follow.

Pixar Short Films Collection Vol 2 – I believe that the title says it all.

Queen of Versailles – In what some are calling one of the best documentaries of the year, an insanely rich couple (bet they voted for Romney) set out to build a stupidly huge house (it would have been the largest single family home in the US!) modeled after Versailles but watch their world fall apart due to the devastating sub-prime mortgage collapse of a few years ago. For those of us who love to see the grotesquely ostentatious get their comeuppance. I also hear it’s hilarious.

Savages – Oliver Stone’s latest finds a drug business threesome getting the high hard one from an encroaching Mexican drug lord (Selma Hayak!). Pretty good time waster (bad ending though) with some great violence and nice scenery. VHS film thief Benicio Del Toro steals the show as a nasty enforcer for the cartel and a balding John Travolta made me wince with his giant face and his insatiable scenery-chewing. Could have been better but it’s too long and the three sexy leads are not among this generations best actors. Also on the Blu Ray.

The Watch – Comedy heavy-weights Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn and Jonah Hill fall short in this tale of neighborhood watch imbeciles who try to thwart an alien invasion (the kind from outer space, not south of the American border, although maybe that’s a metaphor for the immigration issue that some think is plaguing the US. Probably not as this is just a silly comedy). Also on the Blu Ray. Red Band Trailer –

Well that seven years just flew by now didn’t it? What am I on about this time, you ask? Black Dog on Commercial just turned 7 years-old. I now have two bratty, petulant seven year-olds. To celebrate we’re doing our annual late charge amnesty week. Bring in a nice non-perishable donation for the food bank and we’ll wave any late charges you might have accrued anytime before today. This fabulous offer will run all week until next Sunday. So let’s do a good job and get a huge pile of food for those less fortunate than ourselves. And if you have a substantial late charge, be nice and bring in more than just a can of jellied grass.

And please bring in things that people will actually want to eat. I don’t want to see any of the following show up in the store this week…

Also Black Dog on Commercial will be closing early on Thursday November 15th for a private function. If yer planning on renting that day please be advised that we will only be open until 8pm. I hope this doesn’t inconvenience anyone too much.

New Releases for Tuesday November 6th

360 – Where did this come from?! The director of City of God has Anthony Hopkins, Jude Law and Rachel Weisz among others cavorting around in this drama that has a bunch of stories intersecting each other. The film weaves it’s way through Vienna, Paris, London, Bratislava, Rio, Denver and Phoenix for some reason, exploring love and drama, phone calls, moustaches and other stuff. Also on the Blu Ray.

Arthur Christmas – British animated holiday fare finds Santa’s son stealing the keys to his dad’s muscle sleigh for some hijinks that, I imagine, include saving Christmas. Maybe from those holiday-hating Democrats who are always seemingly waging war on Christmas.

Chained – Bob, a serial killing cab driver, raises the son of one of his victims to take over the family business in this nasty piece of business from Jennifer Lynch, Dave’s daughter. Seems the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Also on the Blu Ray. Red Band Trailer –

Dinotasia – Doc kind of thing that follows some dinosaurs as they grow up and eat each other. Narrated by the great Werner Herzog which is, for me, enough reason to check this out.

Even the Rain – A director and his crew shoot a controversial film about Christopher Columbus in Cochabamba, Bolivia, while the locals rise up against plans to privatize the water supply. Drama and politics, I presume, ensue. Stars that handsome guy from that razor blade commercial, Gael García Bernal. You thought I was going to say Adrian Brody, didn’t you?

The Amazing Spiderman – Yes because we needed another version of Spiderman and his spidery origins. Andrew Garfield subs in for Tobey Maguire this time around. I hear it’s pretty good – that’s what my 7 year-old says. He’s seen it. I haven’t. Also on the Blu Ray.

Trishna – Tess of the D’Urbervilles in India. Traditions and class conspire to keep too lovers from different social standings apart. Humans are weird an stupid.

Your Sister’s Sister – Indie comedy/drama finds Mark Duplass (guy’s in everything right now) sleeping with his best friend’s sister. Complications and revealing conversations about relationships, death, siblings, betrayal, unrequited love, honesty, fears, forgiveness and poison monkeys abound (not 100% sure about the poison monkeys). Heard good things about this one – not from my 7 year-old though. Also on the Blu Ray.

Halloween is finally upon us. I don’t know about you, but to me, it seems this Halloween has dragged on forever and has become a bit of a chore. I’m usually a huge Halloween guy but this year, I dunno, some of the magic seems to have disappeared. Maybe it’s because it’s become so popular – Spootacular Savings here Ghosteriffic Gadgets there. Ugh. Too many people see it as nothing but a big party where they can don the latest “sexy” costume. You know, just because you put the word sexy in front of something, doesn’t actually make it sexy. Like “Sexy Big Bird”?! Come on. All these cheap-ass fireworks places popping up that sell lame, really expensive explosives – since when did Halloween become about blowing shit up? So many houses with bad decorations – happy ghosts, pumpkin garbage bags, cheap plastic crap – where’s the scary? I know these are trivial things to be discussing, what with all the earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, flooding, poison monkeys, giant lizards, brain-eating hobos, rude children, hairless dogs, goat-men, Snooki’s and so forth that plague the planet, but this is the one season I look forward to. Maybe it’s the lack of scary movies I’ve watched recently, maybe I’m just getting old. I dunno. I saw some Christmas decorations for sale in the Superstore yesterday. Part of me died a little. Again.

Nothing says Halloween like a Sexy Idiot Bird or Sexy Clown Fish

When I think of Halloween I think of nights like this (A photo I took Monday night outside my house).

Be sure to check out our Facebook Page or Twitter thingy to keep up on our list of over-looked horror gems. I’ll run down what we’ve done so far later in the newsletter in case you might want to watch something good and terrifying this week. For whatever reason (money reasons of course) in order to get updates from Facebook sites, liking it isn’t enough you have to do this now…

New Releases for Tuesday October 30th

The Campaign – Two doofus’ battle it out for public office in this comedy starring Mittens Romney and Barak Obama. Wait that’s real. The synopsis for this film is two doofus’ battle it out for public office in this comedy starring Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis. Also on the Blu Ray.

Ruby Sparks – From the director of Little Miss Sunshine (even the box art looks similar) comes this tale of a lonely writer who creates the perfect female character who he thinks will love him and then he wakes up the next day to find out she’s real. Yes, I agree that synopsis sounds brutally cloying and dull but from what I’ve heard the flick is supposed to be surprisingly good. I wrote a story one time about a guy who had crabs, then the nest day I woke up to find out that I had crabs. So I guess anything is possible when you’re a writer. Also on the Blu Ray.

Safety Not Guaranteed – From the producers of Little Miss Sunshine comes this fine little indie effort that finds the awesomely dour Aubrey Plaza as a magazine intern hot on the trail of a guy who put an add in the paper looking for a partner for his time travel escapades. I had a great time watching this excellent flick even though my stereo wasn’t working and I couldn’t hear any of the music in it. There’s a scene when the guy turns on his portable music player and nothing is heard. It was then I realized something was wrong. I bet it’s even better with music! I bet the music featured some really cool hipster tunes!

Turn Me On, Goddammit! – A 15 year-old Norwegian girl wants to get laid really bad. I’m sure that there’s a joke in there somewhere. Won a bunch of awards at various film festivals and it seems that most everything that comes out of Norway lately has been solid so it may be worth a look. I’m sure the perverts will be lining up to get this one and I’m sure they’ll be a little disappointed when they find out it’s a Norwegian comedy.

Black Dog Newsletter for Week Ending October 29th

Last week I was lamenting the reliance that we (I) have on technology. Stupid, necessary technology. Monday morning I had a busy slate of things to do. Went to the Commercial store only to find that the computer wasn’t working. Blank screen. Took the monitor home to try it out, it was fine. Unplugged everything yadda yadda. Still nothing. Opening in and hour and a half. Trot the machine down the street to the local repair place. They hook it up and viola, it’s working perfectly. Maybe it IS the monitor. Go back to the store and bring it down. No problemo. Happy and bewildered at the same time. Go back to the store and hook it all back up – the mouse doesn’t work. WTF?! New mouse. Everything seems fine. Whew! This morning. Same thing all over again. Had to get the damn thing fixed. No computer for the first two hours of being open. Hello stress, haven’t seen you in a couple of days. I hate the fact that I am so at the mercy of the computer gods to run the stores. What did video stores do 50 years ago before computers? And don’t get me started on the iPhones with their built-in obsolescence and all that. I mentioned this to the nice young woman who I bought my new phone from and she just kind of stared at me, blinking. We’re one sun spot or giant solar flare away from chaos.

Our former employee, friend of the store and Cinemuerte founder Kier-la Janisse has a written a book! House of Psychotic Women. You should buy and read it. It’ll be available in real book stores real soon (it’s available on Amazon right now). http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/15766600-house-of-psychotic-women

New Releases for Tuesday October 23rd

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter – I was hoping/ thought this was going to be a documentary but alas, it’s a big loud dumb movie where the president battles a scourge of vampires who threaten to win the civil war for the South. Of course it’s preposterous and silly and all that but it is also fairly entertaining – just check your brain at the door please. It has a scene where a vampire throws a horse at Abe Lincoln, so it has that going for it.! Don’t think I’ve ever seen a horse thrown at anyone before, in the movies or in real life. And since when can vampires just apply some sunscreen and don a pair of shades and walk around in the daylight? Also on the Blu Ray. The 3-D Blu Ray available at Cambie St. location.

Cochon de Gaza – Palestinian fisherman finds a pig in his net. Not what he expected, right? What’s a guy to do in the land where pigs are not viewed as the tasty magical animals that they are in other parts of the world? Join Jafaar on his misadventures as he tries to unload the unclean swine on his unsuspecting friends, family, Jewish neighbors and whoever he can find to take the oinker off of his hands. (Sorry couldn’t find a trailer with English subtitles)

Eddie the Sleepwalking Cannibal – Canadian comedy about a painter with painter’s block (is that a thing?) who discovers a muse for his art when he meets the titular character, Eddie. He sleepwalks. He eats people. Comedy, hijinks and much eating, I presume, ensue.

Magic Mike – Steven Soderburg’s latest (man how many films a year does this guy pump out? He’s like the American Takashi Miike!) delves into the world of hunky men who shed their clothes for a living. An older veteran peeler takes a young buck under his wing to school him in the fine arts of partying, scoring with the ladies and make some easy dough. Sounds kinda Boogie Nightsish. Heard good things. Also on the Blu Ray. (Sorry ladies and some gents, no 3-D)

Rec 3: Genesis – Not quite the wedding day the young couple were expecting as their celebration turns ugly, not by the usual bickering family members and drunk revelers, but by hordes of flesh eating, blood-thirsty zombie type guests. Let the carnage begin. Just curious, but who brings a chainsaw to a wedding? Loved the first one and number 2 was pretty good, so we’ll have to check this one out. Also on the Blu Ray.

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World – Steve Carell and his really skinny neighbor, Keira Knightley, take a road trip together for some reason as an asteroid is about to destroy the earth. Again with the earth shattering asteroid. Seems that there has been a dearth of things hitting the earth and destroying it as of late. Is there something that they’re not telling us? Also on the Blu Ray.

Old Stuff Just In

Fear and Desire: Stanley Kubrick – A rare early work by Kubrick has been unearthed!

A New Leaf – Great old Walter Matthau comedy directed, written and starring Elaine May.
